You are correct Dave did hit the drums hard. Butch Vig said Something in the way was the hardest song to record on Nevermind because they couldn't get Dave to hit the drums softer.

I'm sure he was hugely inspired by Grohl. Nirvana was the biggest name in music in the early 90s and silverchair became a hit in 95. So yes.
