Like others have said, this is probably the most informative video I've seen on sprinkler adjustments -- and the first one ever that revealed the ability to swap out nozzles! I never knew that and have worked on my own sprinkler systems before. Kudos on the video, Silver Cymbal! (As the "Professor" mentioned below, very good instructional technique - good verbal information with synchronized visual explanation. As a DIYer, I especially appreciated the little PVC mock-up stand you put together to show a rotor head in a working, out-of-the-ground demonstration for clarity. That was an extra step and bit of effort you went to, that was appreciated.)

Very kind of you. I felt the same when someone finally shared these with me too. These make all the difference on having your system tuned for your yard.

It should be said that the ability to swap the nozzle should be thought out prior to doing so. 90% of the people watching this wont have the water pressure through the city to throw 5.0 GPM nozzles in multiple heads on one zone without the zone tanking from low water pressure.

You are one of the best video teachers out there, all subjects. Very few people would take the time to assemble an above-ground sprinkler as you did, solely for delivering a 100% clear video on the topic. And you stick to the point. Thank you for this great video series.

I notice that there isn't really a "seal/gasket" around the inserted plastic nozzle piece, and you can see water 'leaking' / streaming down the side of the head, causing puddles. Is there a way to fix that? I had this issue with brand new Saturn III heads. I tried making adjustments with that screw, which seemed to help hold the nozzle in better.. I am thinking I could take the nozzle out, and wrap it with some Teflon tape, and then re-insert it. You can really see what I'm talking about at 1:36 (Watch the water running own the black cylinder head)

Hey did you ever figure out how to deal with the leaks around the nozzles? I just bought the same heads from orbit and they all leak past the nozzles, seems wasteful.

With the sprinklers running, take that white adjustment key and stick the plastic end of it into the hole with the plus and minus signs and turn it until you feel it engaging. Hold the running sprinkler head with your left hand and turn the key either to the left (-) or right (+). This will either decrease or increase the lateral swing of the head. With most brands, the right swing remains the same while the left is what the key adjusts. If the right swing needs adjusting, do that first. Grab a pair of channel lock pliers and turn the whole head so it's right swing stops where you want it. Don't grip it too tight because it's only plastic and can crack. Once the right swing has been set, use the key to make adjustments to the left swing.

Good video but I have a couple of comments. 1) one thing you didn't take into consideration is if the system can handle a larger nozzle. So say with your current pressure and gpm you can only run 8 gallons a min per zone. If your zone has 4 heads 2 gpm nozzle size by increasing nozzles on that zone you will loose pressure. 2) the best way to get even coverage is to do an irrigation audit. Set up little cups in your yard. Run all zones for 30 min then measure how much water in each cup, times that by 2 and you will figure out how much water you are actually putting down per hour. Then you can adjust from there. Remember in the heat of summer in full sun you need 1.5" of water a week depending on soil type. I just did this with my system and realized I wasn't putting down nearly as much water as I thought I was.

Excellent video.... Tip: If you get dirt in the set screw hole in the small hole inthe rubber cap. You need to clean the dirt out so you cabn use the tool. You need to use a water hose on high power to clean out the dirt so you can adjust the set screw and therefore adjust the spray pattern using the tool.

Not bad. You should also include that obtaining optimum du (distribution uniformity) can be done with nozzle selection. Ie if one head is set at 180 degrees and another is set at 90, then the 180 should have a nozzle twice as large as the 90. For example if I use at 2 on a 90 then I need a 4 on a 180. BTW I'm a certified irrigation technician with the I.A. (the irrigation association).

good informative video. Two additional comments....the screw adjustment in the head not only controls the distance. It provides a more uniform coverage when screwed down a bit more. If your throwing max distance on a head....typically you aren't getting as even a coverage from the head all the way to the max distance. Also, the rate at which the water goes down is also dependent on the number of degrees the sprinkler is set up for. Meaning....if a head is only watering a 90 degree area, and another sprinkler in the same zone is throwing a 300 degree pattern....the head only watering the 90 degree area will have put the same amount of water (assuming its the same type/same nozzle GPM), but to a smaller zone, hence....more water in a smaller area for the area.

Great information to be added. I will caution that it is important to not put the screw down too far. Often I see the screw to far down preventing the sprinkler and nozzle to function as they are designed. We need more water at the outer edge of the arc than we do in the middle. As the sprinkler rotates, it spends less time at the outer edge of the arc over any sq. inch than it will in the middle. I have found that to do this, it is best to lower the screw so that it barely touching the water. It seems like the stream at 7:20 is about right.

Great video, is there an adjustment for how far the head rotates from left to right? I have one head that shoots half its rotation on my driveway but shortening the distance with a nozzle change will leave the other half of the rotation short on the grass. Thank you in advance.
@lancealot3867
@lancealot3867 2 жыл бұрын
Yes there is. Rotate the sprinkler when it on all the way to the left and then back all the way to the right. That is the fixed stop. There is an adjustment to shorten the rotation on the top of the sprinkler. Use the plastic tool. You will see the arrow with a + to increase the rotation and a - to shorten it. It’s easy once you do it a time or two.
