In this video we talk about some of the misconceptions around Kali empty hand techniques, training methods, drills, and the reality of knife techniques.
First of all, there is no "defense" against a knife attack! You must inflict as much damage to the attacker as possible and hope to take minimal damage ourselves. That's where our Panantukan skills come into play.
The defensive drills are there to give us entries, connection, awareness, and heightened sensitivity. Each moment in a drill can be and should be and ending point, but the drill allows us to flow and consider continuity of attack, both of our and our opponent's.
Also, many techniques need to be broken down at first and sometimes this is where people sometimes misunderstand what they are seeing. Breaking things down is what we do in martial arts, but we need to keep evolving our training to encompass a bigger picture.

This is awesome training. The two scariest weapons operated by a single person I can think of are rifles and knives. With a rifle someone hundreds of yards away that you can't hear, smell or see can take you out. With a knife, a silent, deadly tool that's undetectable in most normal circumstances can be deployed closely and swiftly. It can be utilized lethally with slight motion, thrusting or slashing. If you're already in tunnel vision you may not even see the knife and just assume the assailant is hitting you and you may not even notice how badly you've been injured. Damaging someone irrecoverably with a blade doesn't even require skill if they aren't aware of the blade. Scary stuff.

Yeah, finding training partners can be the hardest thing! Do you have a curriculum or process to creating a training group?

Why Practice Knife Survival? Boxers often punch speed bags and heavy bags. Punching bags do not hit back so why bother? Firearms experts & sharp shooters often shoot at stationary paper targets that don’t return fire. Why do they waste time practicing such unrealistic scenarios? Why not engage in actual gunfights to properly “pressure test” skills under actual combat? Outside of a hospital, CPR has a 10% success rate of survival. Therefore it has a 90% failure rate. Why even bother getting CPR certified? Of course I’m being facetious. The point is, there are no guarantees in life & combat is unpredictable! People are often confused as to why Martial Artists even bother practicing how to survive a knife threat or knife attack. Many people say it’s pointless to practice knife theory. I’d like to point out that many people walking the street carry a knife or box cutter and the odds of encountering an attacker with a blade is very real. Knife training is a highly effective way to learn the skeletal system and how to zone away or around someone swinging or thrusting a blade. Having a blade swinging in front of you will greatly enhance your spider senses. There is far less chance for error, so we become more intentional with our footwork and body mechanics. I always assume my attacker will have a knife and all of my movements will be consistent with that assumption. Knife training enhances your situational awareness and teaches you to be more observant. Kitchen Safety: Knife training might improve your culinary skills! Ha ha! Those of us who practice knife theory learn to respect the blade. “A plan is better than no plan!” Thank you for another insightful video Guro Bob! -Gary Sacramento, California
