I don't know about you but I was familiar with yoga and what it was way before I had a clue about Qigong or even how to pronounce it!
In this blog, I'll be discussing the similarities and differences between Qigong and Yoga.

The Main Similarities and Differences Between Qigong and Yoga
5 Similarities Between Qigong and Yoga
1. Both are Eastern forms of exercise.
2. Both teach awareness of your body and mind.
3. Both utilise similar breathing techniques.
4. Both are whole systems involving the body, mind and posture.
5. Both are very ancient practices.
5 Differences Between Qigong and Yoga
1. Yoga tends to focus, at least in the West, on more physical postures or asanas. Qigong focuses on physical movements to a lesser extent and incorporates more of the breath and mind in its exercises.
2. Qigong movements are slower and more gentle than yoga movements. Because of this Qigong is often perceived as a bit boring and not as good at getting you fit as yoga. This is not true. Qigong, when practised regularly, can make you very strong and fit. It will unblock stagnant Qi and allow it to flow more freely so that your health improves. Do bear in mind though that Qigong does not offer you instant gratification. Significant results in terms of health are achieved over a long period of time. You should instantly feel more relaxed when you practice Qigong though! :-)
3. Yoga originates from India. Qigong originates from China.
4. For yoga you may need slightly more athleticism than you will need for Qigong, at least how it is taught in the West. Yoga requires more movement than Qigong. Anyone of any level of mobility can perform the slow and flowing movements of Qigong, even those in a wheelchair or those with severe physical limitations.
5. Nearly every Qigong exercise improves your balance in some way. There are specific yoga balance postures but not every asana in yoga incorporates a balance element to it.
So Which Is Best For You?
If you are more athletic, you may decide that yoga is for you. If you want to address a certain medical issue then you may choose medical Qigong practice. If you are like me, you will do both. As a Qigong teacher I'm also a massive fan of yoga and attend weekly classes as I find that the two blend extremely well together and play a complementary role in enhancing my health and well-being.
What Should I Do Next?
So, if you would like to learn some Qigong for yourself got to the Space To Relax homepage (www.spacetorelax.com). I am a teacher of a raja yoga where there is no physical exercise, only meditation, and i practice Qi Gong and Taichi chuan for my health and my pleasure. I would like to add some things to what you said so beautifully . Yoga is in tune with ayurveda which is a medicine, as Qi Gong is part of the traditional chinese medecine. Yoga and Qi Gong (through taoism ) are paths to the Divine. Thats why there is meditation in each one. What is called Qi in Qi Gong is called Pranahuti in yoga. The deepest you go in the yoga or in QiGong, the more important is this energy . and it is necessary to go through meditation to go deep in the subtler of Qi or Pranahuti.

Thankyou Janice. I'm a Yoga teacher who loves and recommends Qigong!! I'm studying Nursing Science as well so I feel Qigong is better for people who've experienced heart failure as the constant flow means muscles are not asked to hold a pose for any length of time; so the fibres aren't forced to stretch & bear weight. I practice & teach Satyananda and Dru Yoga; both gentler & more holistic forms. Dru appears to be heavily influenced by Qigong. There is more to Yoga than asana (& prancing around with a yoga mat...) however I'm very inspired by the 'big picture' of Qigong. During Isolation I've been sharing more QG videos than Yoga ones!!

If you are interested I'm currently running a free 3 day Qigong Challenge which is suitable for beginners and all done from a seated position so might be enjoyed by some of your students. Hi John, Sadly it is often the case that there are no Qigong teachers available to teach in the local area. That is precisely why I created my online Space To Relax programme - because people around the world had trouble finding face to face classes. I'm delighted that you are enjoying my videos. Did you sign up for the free 3 part video series? I practice yoga too and find that the two complement each other extremely well. :-)

To my surprise I find that I prefer Qigong to Yoga. I practice Ba Duan Jin, Dayan Wild Goose and Zhan Zhong. However when it comes to breathing I prefer yoga's pranayama even though the eight silk brocade involves breath control. The great thing about qigong is that there are many forms and one is bound to suit your personality the most. Some will find my favourite Ba Duan Jin too strenuous and they'll look for a more gentler form. However beginners should be aware that all the qigong forms are more strenuous than they look.

Hi Stephanie, Thanks so much for your comments. Yes you are absolutely right in that there is something for everyone in Qigong. I love the yoga too and one of my best friends here where I live is a yoga teacher. I love her classes. I think the mix of the two is great. Qigong forms can be strenuous but I love the way that the methods can be adapted. I've taught Qigong to people in wheelchairs and to 8 year old children which is very special. Wishing you well with your practice. :-)

Most of the differences you covered have to do with hatha yoga. There are other form like kriya yoga (which I practice) that don't involve much movement. But thank you for this video. I've recently become interested in understanding where these practices from two great cultures meet in the experience it gives its practitioners.

I practice mainly Qi Gong with some yoga. I find both wonderful arts to practice. The Qi Gong is mainly done standing while the Yoga has many toning and stretching exercises that are done on the floor. I believe this may have to do with the fact that Qi Gong has a martial aspect and that in many parts of China it is practiced outdoors in rather cool weather. In India the weather tends to be warmer so practicing on a mat is more acceptable. I believe the future lies in a fusion of Yoga and Qi Gong, and possibly other similar arts like Tai Chi and Aikido. Finally, the major difference with Qi Gong and many other arts is the focus on Qi - feeling, moving and directing Qi to meet specific objectives. Also Qi Gong uses healing sounds, self massage and exercises that target specific organ systems. Some of this may exist in Yoga but is not as common. If you are interested in my Qi Gong journey, check out my two books on Qi Gong on amazon.com Have a great day.

Qi gong came from yoga.. Yoga is about more than 5000 years and Qi gong is 1500 years old.. Buddhist monks from India went to China and developed qigong from yoga..

They are complementary and good practitioners do both. Something that has not been focused on much in comparisons are the yin and yang aspects. I'd say yoga has a more overall yin effect and Qi Gong (most forms) is more Yang. Yoga strengthens the muscles and bones but drains the body leading to a more yin and centering result following the workout. Qi Gong energizes and strengthens the overall body Qi but doesn't strengthen the upper body or core at a muscular level (Quads, hamstrings and calves are worked heavily via Tai Qi or more intense kinds of Qi Gong like Shaolin Lohan style). Which leads me to a general recommendation re mental health: Yoga for anxiety for its grounding/yin quality. Qi Gong for depression for its unique energetic yang benefits.
@JaniceSpaceToRelaxQigong
@JaniceSpaceToRelaxQigong 5 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Personally speaking I can go into a yoga class feeling fairly tired and come out energised. Sometimes my Qigong students feel drained and have to go for a sleep after a workshop! I'd say the effects are different for everyone but I absolutely agree with your first statement that good practitioners do both. That way we benefit from the best of both worlds.

The two are diametrically opposed. I suggest the research best to do would be develop a yoga practice. (From your statements about yoga, it is clear you have only the most superficial and rudimentary understanding of yoga. Then maybe try a chi-gung at a deeper level, but IME, it would be like going from Union and flow, to trying to force the prana (chi or qi), harnessing and beating it like a mule. The end goals of each differentiate between the two as well, and perhaps most notably.

i dont much agree with your comments on diffrecne between yoga and qigong , I think havnt listen of Yoga Therapy , Iyanger Yoga , Prana Yoga . yogic practices are so vast is impossible to compare with any practices . Yoga is founder system of Qigong , which was traveled to china during early buddhism period. Qigong is a great practice with elements of breathing , focusing , stablizing and awareness in whole self .

Hi Vishnu, I agree that there are many forms of yoga, however, as they are practised here in the West they unfortunately focus mostly on the movement aspect. Of course yoga practice involves much more. In the video I am speaking very generally of course, otherwise I could talk for a whole day about this! :-) My understanding is that yoga and Qigong have the same origin, rather than one being the founder of the other? Best wishes, Janice.

yoga has much smaller variation than Qigong. if your body is already messed up, yoga is not very helpful, it will help people with fitter body. Qigong can be way easier and sometimes way harder than yoga. your description of Qigong tells, you hardly have any idea about it

Janice Tucker there are hundreds of different styles of QiGong (Chi Kung) including Chi Kung for martial art and Chi Kung specifically for Meridians (practiced by acupuncturists and Shiatsu Practitioners). I suggest to do more research and do not generalise what is it and what is not. the idea that everybody can practice QiGong is a myth. if you think that go to a martial art QiGong Training and try it yourself
