Hip pain can take many forms. You may feel it in the front of the hip, the back (in the buttocks), on the side (femoral head) of the hip, travelling into the groin, close to the skin surface of deep within the joint. Wherever it is, and whatever the cause, it is generally a good idea to keep the area mobile in order to promote circulation to the area and speed healing (unless your pain restricts your movement completely). In this article you'll learn some Qigong tips to help ease hip pain and promote the flow of Qi through the area.

Qigong for Hip Pain
1. Shaking Head and Wagging Tail Method
This method is part of the 8 Pieces of Brocade (Ba Duan Jin) method in my Space To Relax membership site of online video lessons. What you'll see in the next clip is how to perform this method.
Method
Use a horse stance, standing with feet about 3 feet apart, knees flexed and pushed outwards over the toes (do not let the knees drop inwards). Place palms on knees. Incline trunk of body to left (men) or the right (women) with head slightly lowered and look at the foot. Raise body up, twisting into hips. Lower body back down and sweep whole of trunk across to the other side (think of top of head as a lighthouse beacon). Look at foot then raise body up, twisting into hips. Lower body back down and sweep across to the other side once more. Weight changes from one side to the other and hips are relaxed, following the movement. Knees are bent all the time - do not lock the knee. Maintain strength in legs but be relaxed in waist and trunk.
Finish the exercise by stepping together as palms turn to face the ground then placing one hand (right for women, left for men) flat over Dan Tian with the other hand on top. Circle a few times in one direction and then the other to seal in the Qi. Allow the hands to drop down by the sides of the body and observe any sensations or changes.
Take care if you suffer with high blood pressure or dizziness not to lower the head below waist level.
Exhale as you look at foot. Inhale as body is raised slightly. Exhale as you look at foot again. Inhale as body sweeps across to the other side.
2. Using the Breath to Release Negative Emotions
Use Abdominal Breathing to exhale the pain out through your nostrils. This method is in a previous video I made (spacetorelax.com/get-rid-nega....

Just tried this exercise for first time and it has relieved nagging pain in front of hip joint right away. I am just trying Qi Gong for first time also, as an alternative to flogging along with the usual 'physio' exercises as an attempt to discover some balance and calm. Thanks!

That's great that you are taking such a proactive approach Mary. If you want to try a couple of other routines they are in the links below but please take care not to over stretch and never go into any pain with any of the movements. You are only looking for enough to feel something happening but remember the focus of your breath and mind are just as important as the physical movement. spacetorelax.com/qigong-for-groin-flexibility-and-hip-opening/ spacetorelax.com/lesson-78-qigong-for-tight-hips-back-replay-of-live-zoom-class/

Yes, you'll definitely benefit from regular breaks to get up and move around as long periods of sitting can make the hips tight.

@carpenterfamily6198
@carpenterfamily6198 4 жыл бұрын
I ‘ look ‘ at the pain ( rather than trying to ignore or distance myself from it. ) No, it’s my pain - there’s no denying it - it’s part of me. Then as I breath - I ‘ breath through ‘ the pain - inhaling and exhaling through the pain. My goal is not to lessen the pain - I don’t have any goals. I just accept it. But oddly I find that often the pain does lessen, probably because I’m not trying to make anything happen. That’s been my experience anyway, perhaps this will help others. Or perhaps others will share additional techniques that have helped them. Blessings 🙏

Hi Janice, I appreciate your instructions very much. I am a very active person, in late 60-s, but when I walk as a form of exercise, after 2,000 steps my left hip starts hurting. My xray show that I have mild arthritis and mild osthepenia. Do you believe that in my case your Qigong exercises can still be helpful?

Hi Seta, Thank you and I'm glad you are finding my videos interesting. Great that you are still exercising. Yes, the Qigong exercises can still be helpful for you as they are gentle but will still create the conditions for free flow of Qi and blood. However please listen to your body and don't do anything that causes you pain. You are very welcome to join my free classes live on Zoom every Thursday with replays sent out by email if you can't make it. I hope you can join us. Here is the link: spacetorelax.com/qigong-online-class/. Best wishes, Janice.

@@JaniceSpaceToRelaxQigong As your videos are likely to be watched in many countries might you be able to have the “cc” captions available in a few other language options? I’ve seen a few YT videos where clicking on “cc” box at top right brings up a list of choices.

@@lindaj5492, thank you so much for that. I just did some research and it's easy to select from many languages once you know how. Just 5 clicks to get subtitles in the language of your choice. Go to the settings button along the bottom of the video screen and click on “Subtitles”, then “Auto-translate” then select from a list of languages. Subtitles will then appear for that video. I’m not sure how good the translation is but hopefully it’s not too bad. Best wishes, Janice.

Qigong is all about manipulating energy through movements. This is just an exercise without any qigong movements involved while the given exercise may improve hip pain but definitely it is not qigong.
@JaniceSpaceToRelaxQigong
@JaniceSpaceToRelaxQigong 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting although I'd have to disagree I'm afraid Padma. Qigong is about creating the conditions for free and open flow of Qi through movement, mind and breath. A combination of all three is involved, although Qigong can be practiced without movement of the physical body (apart from the movement of the breath). I'm simply sharing the Qigong my professors in China at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangzhou shared with me. That is the Qigong I know. Best wishes, Janice.

Try making the movements so small they are almost microscopic and instead use your mind and breath to lead the Qi into the hip. Where the Qi goes, the blood (and nourishment) follows. Wishing you well. Janice.
