A Christmas Carol, Dickens’s immortal story of morality and kindness, has become Christmas lore and from the Victorian era to the present day, it has cemented the traditions of giving and family gatherings. For this festive event, actor and writer Simon Callow talks about the beloved tale and the legacy of Dickens, and reads his favourite scenes from the book.
Aside from appearing in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Shakespeare in Love, Callow has performed in several Dickens stories, including a one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol for the BBC and onstage, and The Mystery of Charles Dickens. He has also written a biography of Dickens and portrayed Dickens himself on Doctor Who.

Has anyone seen Simon Callow's one man film version? It's phenomenal! Almost as phenomenal was this album version of the Carol he did with a band playing classical christmas carols in the backround.

After independently studying the origins of "A Christmas Carol" for 14 years, I am convinced that this story was originally written by Americans Mathew and Abby Whittier; Dickens only hurriedly commercialized their novella. The opening, in my opinion, was written by Mathew, being absolutely typical of his work going back to 1830 and even earlier. Dickens actually made the writing style worse, in the sense of adding unnecessary verbiage to it, which one can see by carefully examining the handwritten draft.
