Thank you Mr. Leach for sharing your knowledge and experience-learned lessons. I am very, very new to pottery and I have been learning from different people who are on the internet, as well as from DVD's I've bought. I have learned the most from you. Your advice has been the most helpful and, not only the easiest, but the clearest instruction I have found. Thank you, again, for taking the time to teach all of us! God Bless!

My instructor keeps the end of his leather in an old film case, with the lid on, so that the part he uses hangs out. When he uses it he holds the case in his hand, like a handle. With the lid on and the leather hanging out, you trap air in the case and so it floats in the water and you can't lose it.

The Dollar Store is an excellent source for bamboo kitchen utensils, which I suspect with a little innovation would make satisfactory throwing tools. I'd better put that on my to-do list....

My instructor recommends using hard, used, no-good thin paint brushes to make your sponge on a stick. The hardened bristles make a base so the sponge doesn't bend too much when you put it in the bottom of your pot. I use the foam liners from cone boxes as the sponge part.

@wackedout991 fast way...get some pie tins, the cheap aluminum kind. Buy some plaster at hardware supply store. Mix up and pour the plaster, allowing it dry several days. That will give you small areas to put "mess ups" or wet clay that is too wet to throw...the plaster will help speed up the process in getting it back to the workable stage. This will work well and in a pinch. Good luck.

Wow what a great video. I have the idea of making the cutting off wire have a weighted end. Also the part where you were looking for all the tools at the end was too funny lol. That's me to a "T" when I am working hahahaha. I gotta take your advice lol.

The sponge on a stick that came with your tool kit was the best ever. I used that thing to death. I replaced the worn out sponge with a natural sponge, which proved to be a mistake. It was too soft and the stick kept making its way through.

Do you find a rather unpleasant smell arising from the water pot after leaving the wood, sponge and leather sitting in it for any length of time?

Deep Ashtray - I would not leave your tools to sit in the water pot ! My dad used to tick me off after garden chores if I had not put the tools away as they had wooden handles and don't like rain on them ! The smell you get from the water pot is the rotting clay which has some organic matter in it... I bet mine smells worse, but don't worry as well rotted clay is more plastic and throws better. ( of course refresh your water more often if it bothers you.)

@@sleachpots It was never an issue until I set up my own throwing wheel and can be lazy. While I have your attention, I have a more pragmatic question. Could you do a video on how your studio sink drain is set up? Do you use a commercial trap or something DIY? And how you dispose of contaminated clay and discarded glazing. Thank you.
