@juliafranz72 Hi Julia, vinegar is being used as a 'deflocculant' - i.e. the acid attacks the particles and reduces their ability to stick to each other thus making the clay 'fluid' more quickly than by just using water. Mix pulverised dry clay with vinegar to make a paste for repairing broken 'greenware' e.g. a broken handle. Apply vinegar to surfaces to be joined so that paste does not dry out on contact with the piece. The repair remains delicate until bisque fired. Hope this helps.

I take two large saltillo tiles to dry my slaked clay. Saltillo tiles are a fired mexican clay and they are super absorbent. My slaked clay goes in a pile spread out on one tile, and the other tile gets put on top of it. An hour or so later, enough moisture has been absorbed from top and bottom to wedge the clay up and go. Not a lot of effort and quick results!

The vinegar works as a flocculant, I have used vinegar in glazes and in slips, makes it all stick together ! Simon it is great to see you having a lark!, thanks for your wonderful vídeos. I believe your coining of the word redondify is sublime, it is super Spanglish!!😃😃

Before, 30 years ago we used Calgon as a deflocculant, stopped glazes from falling to bottom of water.

Ahem, any ideas how to replace saltillo tiles for those of us living in the UK? I also use your plaster bat system, Simon, but plaster makes me nervous!! What about making tiles and firing then at a highish bisque t? Woud they be strong enough? How thick are saltillo tiles? Keep up the excellent videos, Simon, you are a born teacher, as well as such an artist and skilled craftman!

I have a synthetic burlap bag inside my bucket. When the clay is saturated I pull the bag out and let it hang for a bit (a day or so). It is much easier to wedge up but now I am wondering what chemicals I have left behind in any water left behind. Any opinion sir?

I used apple vinegar, and after a week, the stuff stank to high heaven. Even after working the clay back to useability, throwing a few pots and letting them dry, the studio was mighty offensive, as were the pieces-- couldn't wait to get them fired. Was it the apple vinegar or something else?

I don't totally understand the process. do u drain out the water after the clay has softened a bit or do u allow it to absorb all the water? wouldn't it get really mushy if so how do u get it to a firm consistency to work with. I'm just starting out with clay so I don't know these things
@ianjames6320
@ianjames6320 7 жыл бұрын
Uheada Agabi hey mate yes it's gets lovely and mushy. U can use your hand or a paint mixer on ur drill to really mix it up. then pour the lot on a plaster slab. the plaster sucks out the water. then you can knead the clay ( called wedging ) you wedge the clay to get the air out and consistency you want. it's very satisfying.

why not run the dried clay through a matate or grind it into dust.
@micheledickey4066

Clay dust is VERY HARMFUL to your health. It is not just mud and water. There are a lot of dangerous chemicals added to clay, especially manufactured clay. There is silica which is of course very bad for your lungs.
