No Andros and apparently you are missing the point. If a club signs a manager to perform a task and they are not performing that task they get sacked and their contract is paid up. Simons point is that Watford took a chance on Silva who then ditched them at the first opportunity. If someone takes a chance on you you owe them the respect to at the very least to act professionally. If he was sacked without his contract being paid up then Andros would have a point, they did and he doesn’t.

what Simon is saying is its a lose lose for owners, they dont want to sack managers they only do it when the club have underperformed and on top of that they have to pay for the privilege of failing to meet targets. The manager signs a contact with the club with the full intention of meeting those targets set by the board.

As a Watford fan I feel I can comment on this. Marco Silva downed tools as soon as we told him he wasn’t allowed to talk to Everton! Simple as that. He also got in the ear of players like Doucoure & Richarlison (both ended up at Everton) who’s performances both dipped off around Xmas time. Silva was sacked, from memory, around middle of January where the performances for 8-10 weeks were horrific under him where he was clearly sulking because he couldn’t get his own way. He engineered his departure ultimately because the club had no choice but to sack him as we dropped from 4th place down to 15th (something like that) in the space of 2-3 months.

You really don't understand basic logical causality, let alone the economics of such decisions if you say that Andros won the argument. Simon is wrong to expect loyalty because everyone is out for himself in this world but if you think any club benefits from hiring a manager, recruiting players he wants, firing him for not giving a damn and then letting him come back and take his players with him, then you're a simpleton. Everton only paid because they got sanctioned. That's a legislative compulsion forcing them to do it, which means everyone recognises the damage caused here.

Townsend isn’t wrong when he says that managers in the premier league, at least, get sacked when the team loses more than it wins which happened in the last season at West Brom, Chelsea and Tottenham. An exception to that list was Sheffield where Chris was backed by his owner despite the struggles. From Simon’s perspective it’s a nightmare to sack because he needs to get new recruitments immediately but that’s a risk most club owners take in returns for the money they receive for staying in the premier league.

Simon is suggesting there is a set definition for success and failure, but many coaches get sacked unreservedly in the eyes of many. So there is job insecurity there and a lack of loyalty. Take Emery as an example. In his first season Arsenal appeared to be building a really good outfit and were unlucky not to make the UCL by 1 point, after suspensions & injuries in the run in. The following season didn't start well & a clique of players turned against him. Did the board back him? No, they sacked him. Those players continued to do the same things under Arteta and eventually they were sold. Meanwhile, Arteta's Arsenal have regressed & they were beaten by Emery in the final of the UEL (irony). So, when it became clear that many of the players had turned on Emery &he knew the board wouldn't back him, and another club came in for him; would it have made him a snake to leave, or just prudent?

I don’t know what kind of treatment would Rafa get from Everton fans when the league starts because what they don’t understand that foreign managers, maybe even domestic, cannot hold onto loyalty as the fans do because they are in a business of finding new jobs when the old ones don’t work out. It’s a difficult world for them too when they are out of work and more often than not managers, just as most players, respect the club they played for when they have to put a team against them.

It’s the only time I can remember when SJ gets so animated to make a point, dogmatically repeats himself (opposed to rewording his argument) and lacks a concise killer blow to AT’s observation ). I would love to hear them debate in the Commons!

loyalty from the club to the manager is no more a factor if you fail. loyalty is seen how much the manager is backed with signing and backroom staff. and when a manager, as pointed out, just gets up and leaves after you have the whole team and parts of the club in his image, that my friend is low.

You hired him 6 months after as he was on 'gardening leave' whilst the compensation was being sorted out. You were sanctioned, if compensation wasn't paid as per the arbitration, Everton would've had a sanction, be that a transfer ban or a points deduction.

The idea of ‘loyalty’ these days, is irrelevant regardless of manager or player. Loyalty is exclusive to the fans and no one else. Players, managers, owners etc love to paint themselves with the gloss of loyalty, but for them, it’s a business, a career, an opportunity, and that’s all. We, the fans are the only reliable, loyal and steadfast element in the whole setup and we need to remember that, whoever we support.
@danieltongue5022

Upon relistening to the clip, SJ is absolutely right in his assertion that loyalty is fundamentally based upon payment (from club to manager) and even when a manager is sacked, the loyalty remains (contractual agreement is honoured). Loyalty (or belief) can also be measured by the sums (from the club) involved in player recruitment…. However, despite his basic formulation of the facts and lacking the same intellectual integrity under scrutiny, I’m incredibly impressed by the persuasive powers of AT.

there is very little loyalty in the game. and where we do see it, it's not absolute and a rarity. Imagine you book a cab to the airport to go on holiday (a definite rarity these days), done all shopping and made all the arrangements. Halfway, the cabbie pulls over and gives you back £20 (half the fare) and says "you'll have to get another cab, I've got a better offer!" Definite snake!

They both have good points they have to agree to disagree. Football is about at least staying in the division you are in for some clubs it is winning the league or promotion and advancing. All obviously based on results. The nature of the environment makes managers and owners make these moves either leaving or getting sacked etc, etc. It’s ruthless.

Of course in this case the illegal approach from Everton and the subsequent loss of form Watford suffered makes Silva disingenuous so I get what Simon's saying there. However, Simon's larger point about manager's "honoring" their contract is bullshit. When you give someone an opportunity you're doing it because it suits you as well(not just them) and just because you're also paying them for it you aren't entitled to their services for life - it's not bonded labor. If it's ok for a club to treat a manager like a commodity and say sacking them isn't unfair because they're paying up the rest of the manager's contract, why should the manager not have the same attitude when switching clubs mid-contract?

Andros doesn't understand simon at all, Simon is saying that Watford gave a relegated manager a chance to stay up and back him, results were good and then Everton came in. Rather than continue working and then leaving in a proper manner, he downed tools and aild the club down the river so they sacked him. I dont blame Silva for leaving but you can clearly see he couldn't care less about a club that gave him the chance to be considered for the Everton job ?

Very entertaining but unfortunately a discussion that went of on too many tangents where no actual resolve came of it … Simon was clearly talking about the issues of management and managers playing games… Townsend was talking about loyalty in football…. The point Simon Jordan is making was regarding a manager who literally left at the sniff of a decent opportunity before the ink was dry in the contract. Whereby in this case we had a manager in Silva who was approached by Everton and wanted to take it right away … when he wasn’t given such he basically down tools deliberately to get the sack and got paid out his contract for doing so… Andros just started to generalise and go on about the lack of loyalty from owners of all clubs and how they sack managers after a few bad results… which again is utter nonsense… Managers usually get sacked around October / November time or at the end of the season. Just to point out those managers that do get sacked during October / November are done so based on the performance of the previous season where they can see no progress or improvement following a transfer window and preseason… It’s very rare you see a manager get sacked where you feel it was undeserving…

It's odd how football so often wants to kill freedom. If you get a job selling cars or managing a dealership and a better job comes open, people are free to chase opportunity, happiness....if a dealership that sells Nissan decides it wants to sell Jaguar/Land Rover instead, they are free to do it. Simon thinks he can fire a manager because he pays, but a manager walks out and doesn't take the money, which is just the flipside of his justification coin, makes him a snake...that's madness. He's allowed to fire a manager that doesn't get results but a manger can't quit an owner that doesn't get results...it's madness...
