Should I keep working on the shopping bag hat and turn it into a yetch.store/ product?

When my son was younger, he'd get all excited when I'd say "Simone has a new video!" and we'd watch together. Now I exclaim you have a new video and my 19 yr old says "Yeah, the hat. I already watched it." At least he still watches!

There's a product to make fabric more rigid and it's honest to goodness called "stiffy." We used it all the time in costuming... and I must say that maintaining a degree of professionalism while asking people to "grab the stiffy for me" is probably the greatest thing I have ever achieved.

Even if the things you make prove to be less practical, or even less functional than you had planned, there's always a purely optimistic dream at the heart of every project, which is what makes them so fun to watch. My daughter and I have been watching your videos for years. Her reactions have changed from her being a six year old "oh, that's so cool" to her being a 13 year old "that's so cool, maybe I could try making that"

A few comments: 1) The final version looked impressively hat-like, even though the penultimate version... not so much. 2) If only she preferred berets over baseball caps. 3) I would bet that there was a point in the process where Simone wore a shopping bag on her head, and wondered if she could call it a hat.

An idea for a different configuration: The cap is the bottom of the bag. Sew a normal tube bag into the inside of the hat's rim (though you may need a hat without the strap at the back) such that the netting is wider, creating a conical bag with the cap being the narrowest part. Cut out two handles for in the netting near the other end, then roll the netting in on itself. Your hat now has no awkward holes or zippers, but has an easily deployed bag inside of it with no fancy cut panels that require special folding. And best of all, the mesh for the bag can act as a wick for sweat so the hat can keep your head cool in the summer.

It's not the bag-hat you needed, but it's the bag-hat you deserve.

That soap dispenser has been far and above the most useful of all the kiwico kits my son built. We used it for many years until it finally got retired a month or so ago.

I work almost exclusively with fabric, and I understand completely. Not only does the fabric move, but the weave of fabric creates stretch for a lot of fabrics.

Sometimes you don't get the bag-hat you wanted, but you get the bag-hat you need.

Nice job, nice hat-bag, and nice tip about the corn starch+water solution. Another few sewing tips: Get that no sew, heat bonded, polyamide strips. Bond to one fabric first, remove paper, then bond to the other fabric. Unlike tape, it is safe to sew through and doesn't leave any residue on your needle and thread. It will temporarily stick to even silnylon and silpoly enough that you can handle it and sew it without it coming apart. I like this method better than pins and clips, though, it works less on curves. If doing curves, I do small sections spaced apart, sort of like using pins or clips. The nice thing about it besides not having to remove it like pins and clips, is that it keeps the fabrics more flat than using especially pins, so less distortion tends to happen when you sew. Use an iron with water/steam to fold over edges/hems and get them to stay much better. I sometimes pre wet the fabric first, and then iron it. This tip only applies to synthetic fabrics: Use a hot knife; many times when melting more than one layer of fabric together, they will stick together at the edges, so when you go to sew it, only separate it where you need to. Meanwhile, since you also melted the edges, you don't necessarily need to hem it, unless you need the hem for extra strength. Point is that the individual threads are much less likely to unravel. This is especially so if you do a zig zag, or preferably an overlock stitch, if you have it as an option, on the edge. But yeah, hems are helpful for adding extra strength and durability, so for some applications you don't want to forego it, unless you're going to add multiple rows of stitches (if the fabric is sturdy/strong enough, you can do this). If sewing really thin/light and/or slippery fabrics, put tissue paper underneath the fabric, it helps the feed-dogs get a better grip, and I don't know about you, but when I don't feed my feed-dogs right, they tend to (make me) lose grip on everything from sanity/reality, calmness, and not just the fabrics... Regularly clean out under the inside of the plate (where the bottom bobbin is put) and while doing that, occasionally re-oil with a drop or two of appropriate oil if you have the option. One last and quick tip, and just the tip. You can actually sew lighter to medium weight fiberglass cloth (like 2 to 6 oz/yd2)... _if_ you first siliconize it (silicone caulk thinned with solvent like naphtha and then applied to the fabric with either a brush or soaked in a bag/bucket). Lot's of potential uses for siliconized fiberglass cloth. Sew to the outside of regular fabrics (especially sturdy hemp, flax linen, polyester, and/or nylon) and make cut and fire resistant clothes. Increase the water resistance of clothes while keeping breathability (if you thin the silicone enough and apply it more lightly), dramatically increase strength and durability of other fabrics/garments. Note: It will wear down your needles faster though.

In those cases, work both harder and smarter, like, for instance, the person who composed the text for this poster, who did work hard, but also worked smart, which is why this slogan takes so long for you to read, and why your supervisor, upon finding you working harder because you're NOT working smarter, can't just quickly orate a brief slogan but must come back here into the break-room, possibly with you in tow (it'll depend on the circumstances), to consult what this poster actually says, including the part explaining why this poster must be consulted each time rather than being memorized as something succinct but also cheap, shallow, frivolous, and as trite as 'at the end of the day, the bottom line, is what it is'". I think we can ALL agree that that poster has a LOT of words. I've never heard ANYONE say it didn't.

There are a group of knitters who create non-euclidian 2-dimensional shapes. I wonder if they could help with creating a bag that could fold out and store compactly.

Ok. Hear me out. This would go AMAZINGLY for gardeners! I am constantly forgetting a harvest bag. But i never forget my hat that protects me from sunburn!

That's actually really incredible as is! I mean, bag form does look a bit wonky but I'm just impressed how good it looked on head after the modifications! I'm always a fan of items that have a secondary function that doesn't negate the looks of the primary function. This feels like a bug out bag no brainer at the very least. If you made it a waterproof hat, someone would use it for an emergency fishing basket, or market it as such...

Once again Simone is successfully answering the question no one ask. Love it!

This is relatable. About 30 years ago I studied design at the academy of arts. I had a similar idea, and I also tried one that turned into a rain poncho. Neither prototypes really worked in the end but I learned a TON about working with fabrics. It's still magic to me. The fact that yours works, and still looks like a proper hat (LOL), well, hats off, pun intended :P Great vid!

I can so totally align with the "oops, I forgot it again". I have dozens of these reusable bags, and I ALWAYS forget putting them back together and into my handbag again. Great project, love it!

You want wow factor? The head band of the hat is a metal coil under tension - think pop-tent - they’re held secure until you pull on the brim, separating it and the Velcro-connected pieces of the hat which will become the handles. Structural integrity from the metal frame means you could use a thin silk mesh for the bag itself.

That would be excellent to wear for a sudden foraging opportunity, like when you unexpectedly find mushrooms that you have to have as soon as you find them. The mesh would allow the spores of the mushrooms to freely flow out. Maybe the little piece in the middle should be the missing white puzzle piece.

A couple of years ago I worked on foldable air plane wings as a student project. When you said you had trouble getting the bag to fold in a certain way consistently, I instantly thought of that project. That's because the project was located at an institute for bionics and biomimetics, so nature-inspired design. They gave me a bunch of pictures of beetle wings. Those wings are built to always fold in exactly the same way, actuated by only one muscle at the leading edge of the wing. It's a very nifty compliant mechanism powered by elaborate, non-linear folding-patterns. The folds curve in ways that has them pull on each other, so the force of that one muscle on the edge is distributed all along the surface of the wing. I'm not sure if by now there is an easy way of generating these patterns for arbitrary shapes though. Robert J. Lang, or someone similarly invested in origami, would probably know about this. So anyway, what I'm trying to say is: insect wing bag hat when?

3:59 - Maybe I haven't been following all of this channel's videos as carefully as I should have, but I missed the one where Simone recruited a cat (named "Futz"?) onto the creative team. I'd like to know more about Futz's origins, education, and previous gigs, and what new skills and aptitudes Futz is expected to bring to the Giertz family operation. I DO already know that many felines have a gift for losing pieces of jigsaw-puzzles. I look forward to the videos where Simone puts an acorn-sized part down, then looks for it later to no avail, gives up after 90 minutes, goes to the kitchen for a cold beverage, and finds Futz batting around the lost part as if it were a mouse.

Great idea! I finally trained myself to bring reusable bags into the store, by not allowing myself to get plastic bags if I forgot. It meant I had to either walk out to the car to get them, or carried groceries out in my arms. That got old, so eventually the habit of grabbing them every time I got out of the car stuck. Love your videos! .

Brief guest appearance from Laura. I think the end product was waaaaay better than I had anticipated. I think if you keep working on it, you could make a very high quality hat-bag or bag-hat. It's a niche product, but it has many uses. Think about going to the beach, camping, or a picnic, there always seems to be more stuff leaving than when you arrived. Pulling out a bag from your hat would be very convenient.

I would buy the hell out of this in 5 different colors, please. Keep it up!

I love this problem to be solved & the boundaries imposed to solve it in. Very much like your coat hanger problem/solution. The most exciting part is blending Engineering, Physics, Materials, Art, Comfort, & Satisfaction into the void of Creative Reality. Vacuuming your house while it's on fire is actually a very accurate description of the intellectual process required to achieve desired result. Remember, Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) practiced target shooting using the fireplace of his home/apartment to process solutions in the void of criminal analysis/deductive reasoning to discover the unknown. This is, and always has been, my favorite place to work. Nearly impossible to describe to others because it is The Void. I've worked The Void many times in my life & currently am working The Void to solve Solar Power for my camper van. Thanks Simone for sharing almost 10 minutes of working The Void of this brilliant problem. You know that the work is actually 10 days, weeks, months or more & it never leaves your mind until solved. Thanks for the kinship & video.
