One of the biggest frustrations with the Gen 4 Suzuki Jimny is the inability to keep the traction control turned off while beach driving over 30km/h and causing all sorts of headaches with loss of momentum in the soft sand. There are expensive solutions online that top over $1K, however in this video I demonstrate a $6 modification fix for the issue.
Obviously I am not an expert or mechanic and don't really know the longer term ramifications for using this work around so please keep that in mind! All I can say for sure is that it has worked my vehicle thus far!

Yeah I ended up putting the switch down low on the dash so its pretty hidden and left the short wire in so it can be reverted back to normal if need be - def the smarter way to go haha 🤙

Took the fuse out today and was happy to get same result. Means I can tow my trailer through the soft stuff easily now. Did a run at Fraser few months ago on incoming tide and he’ll it was a nightmare. Ended up running 4L to get through a lot of soft sand for miles, but in 4H would have smashed it if not for the f… TC. FYI I called Suzuki AU HQ today and got flogged off to the QLD Marketing Team who really did not want to hear my winge about this topic and we’re quick to say that they have no complaints about the TC issue and it’s there to protect the driver. Haha, yeah right, on the road yes but off road, serves no purpose. Anyways I told them that it’s ludicrous to promote the Jimny as a serious off-roader , charge a lot for it and then make excuses for the soft sand issue not being a requirement for a 4x4 to be going over 30k an hour. BS I said. Again thanks for your post, I’ll be fitting the switch for sure.

Thanks for the update mate! Yeah we are planning a trip to Fraser in the next couple of months and that was my main motivation to try and find a fix! I can't believe Suzuki reckon they've had no complaints about it?!! I might get on and try and do the same in the next week when I have some time.

Great vid. Out of interest would removing the fuse give the same result. Just that I’m heading off this weekend and won’t have time to do what you have done so quick fix would be take the fuse out temporarily on the soft sand driving.?

Soldering cable connectors is the best way to ensure connectivity. However, where the soldering material end inside the cable is a braking point. Meaning, vibrations might cause the cable to brake over time. Solution: cable tie the soldered part tight to a solid surface to eliminate vibrational movement.

Curious, is the switch and connectors you are using. Are they rated for 40amp current? Based on the fuse rating and the heavy gauge of the green wire, I assume that circuit has quite high loading. Not sure I'd want to rely on that load going through a cheap switch. Guess a relay could be used though.
@CampsiteQLD
@CampsiteQLD 2 жыл бұрын
Hey bud yep good feedback.. the wiring is all sufficient for the 40amp system - we considered putting in a relay, but really felt it wasnt needed given how infrequently we are likely to be using the system and putting it under heavy load.. but its def sonething you could consider for more peace of mind.
@apsilonblue
@apsilonblue 2 жыл бұрын
I was going to make the same comment. That switch is probably rated for ~10 amps. Given the circuit has a 40 amp fuse I wouldn't do this without a relay. There would certainly be a safety margin in that 40 amps but is it a factor of 4? I really think you should reconsider how this is wired. Last thing you want is a vehicle fire for the sake of saving ~$20.

Bridge the service connector taped to the harness going to the accelerator pedal, turn on the ignition with anything, wire, paperclip etc, turn on ignition, wait for the ESC lights to turn off and hold down the ESC off switch until the dash turns orange and says service mode. ESC off for all speeds and all ranges, everything else still works, no cutting wires, no logged ESC and ABS faults in memory for Suzuki to say what's going on here when they do anything related to the disabled circuits.

Hey man - yep the maintenance mode is an option but honestly Ive found it combersome and a massive pain, especially in a convoy with other vehicles.. I needed a solution that worked better for me so this is that. Def not saying its for everyone and in the end I was able to do it without cutting any of the wires and it can be fully reverted back if I need 👍

Would it not be worth tracing the wires back to just the traction control unit and fitting a switch in at that point instead of at the fuse box.

It this really a problem though? When I have my Jimny on the beach it runs fine at any speed once I get it on the hard stuff, and in the soft stuff I'm going less than 30km because I don't want to roll or otherwise break my car. For the really soft stuff such as getting on or off the beach, I'm in low range anyway. I was worried that I'd have to do either this or the ESC maintenance mode hack but at this point I'm not sure I see the need. I don't know, maybe some people drive their Jimny at high speed in really soft sand but I think the wheel base is way too short to be safe or comfortable.
@jasonkofoed6626
@jasonkofoed6626 Жыл бұрын
Yes not a good thing to override this way, better to loop the black/tan wire at the acceleration pedal. It’s a permanent fix that doesn’t record isolation, once looped at the pedal it just a simple 8 second hold of the switch every time you want to disengage the traction control. I understand why you went to the source but definitely a no-no, easier permanent way to on/off the traction issue.

why not just put it in esp service mode, jumper wire in the plug next to the throttle pedal, key on dont start, hold traction button until dash turns orange. start car. restart car to re-engage. jumper wire stays in place. 2 mins and no actual modification needed.
@CampsiteQLD

Its an option but as Ive said previous anything like this is more of a dick-around than a switch on my dash to turn it on or off. I know these methods work ok for some folks but its not for me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Here’s another way of doing it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eM-VrbaJ2LCod3U.html I’ve done it in my Jimny and it works like a charm. However, as I have a different (more simple) dashboard my ESC disabling procedure is slightly different. I disable RSC before starting the engine, not after.

Hi Boris. Hope you see this message and is able to respond. I also have this "simpler" version of the JB74. And I've had no luck enabling ESP service mode after bridging the pins. Please run me through your procedure, and/or point out all major differences to the regular procedure. I'm days away from giving up and just pulling out the fuse - despite having 3 of my 5 years warranty left on the Jimny. Regards.
