This scale exercise is a really effective approach to learning the fingerboard. Many bassists suffer from spending most of their time in half and 1st position, with a bit of playing up and down the G string to get the top notes, so this exercise can help you avoid that trap. Working on this 'middle register' can open up your understanding of the fingerboard and give you more creative options for phrasing and improvising. I also work on another, similar exercise with arpeggios.
Play these exercises in different keys and positions to get the most from your practice time.

Good suggestions! Maybe play a drone note for the root of the scale to keep a reference?

What's a drone note?? I play electric bass, but found this very interesting and useful thanks.

@@stevewoodward7850 Just a continuous pitch (single note) you can use to reference your tuning.

Put 'c' on D string, then 'e' on D string with thumb, 'g' on D string with 3rd finger, 'b' on G string 2nd finger, 'c' on G str 3rd finger. Multiple notes, one shift from 'c'!!!

HI Geoff. You are the absolute go to site for the Double Bass. I have used and benefited from many of your tutorials , thank you. PLEASE ADVISE , I play the bass guitar but have moved onto the Double Bass and have become lost in the world of Arco ( sounds like I am strangling a cow.) I have a music theory question that I just cant seem to work out , cant tell you how many hours I've spent trying to crack this code. There are NO double bass teachers in my town or even in a town nearby so I have no one I can bug my side of the map. If you don't mind I have a question I'd like to ask you but only if that's OK with you. They say there is no such thing as a dumb question , hope so . Cheers. Gavin Alexander
