This morning we are having old fashioned biscuits and gravy, its one of our favorite things to have for breakfast and is a meal that will hold you over most of the day!
How to can sausage ➡️
• Talking Pigs & Pressur...
Tour the Root Cellar ➡️ • Homestead Canning Pant...
Biscuit Recipe
2 cups all purpose flour
1 heaping Tbsp Baking Powder
1 tsp salt
1-2 Tbsp of Lard or Crisco
1 cup(ish) of Milk
Preheat oven to 425. Combine dry ingredients. Add Lard or crisco, work until no pieces are larger than a pea. Add Milk, mix until just combined. Lightly knead dough until workable, flour hands or surface if needed. Make biscuits either by rolling into a ball and flattening or cutting out with biscuit cutter. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!
Unfortunately I do not have a recipe per say for the gravy. Some tips I can give you though. Use enough flour to soak up what ever kind of grease you are using, stir until thickened, let cook on low for a short time until you start to slightly smell the flour. Remove from heat, add milk or water, stir, return to low heat, continue mixing, add more liquid if gravy is to thick or cook longer if gravy is to thin. If it tastes like its "missing something" add salt until it tastes right, if it tastes like flour keep cooking until it doesn't. I hope this helps! Yall be blessed!

I love that you call your basement the grocery store. The guys I work with referrer to our house as the Walmart of our little village. We do our best to stay stocked with not only food, but also toiletries, cleaning supplies, meds, etc. We never considered ourselves "preppers", we just like to keep ourselves stocked up on the things we use and need. The same way our ancestors did years ago. In the late nineties when my wife and I lost our jobs, that food storage came in real handy. I do my best to encourage everyone around me to do the same. The toilet paper shortage a couple years ago should've been a warning to everyone. Keep up the good work educating the public about the benefits of self sufficiency. You're doing a great job.

My great grandmother in Chatsworth, GA taught me how to make biscuits and gravy in 1976. I was 11 years old. I remember every detail - especially the part about being patient and letting the flour cook. "if you rush this part it won't be fit to eat", she'd say. Now, I can't remember much I learned in school, but I could still pass my great grandmother's test for sure when it comes to making this. I love the idea of the canned sausage! Looks fabulous!

❤️This starved me to pieces! 😂 I never mastered making good biscuits but I did learn to make good gravy and sausage gravy is the best!! The only thing that puzzled me was 5 biscuits for a family of 4. Granted they were big biscuits but I don’t think I’ve ever eaten just one biscuit with gravy (except at Hardees😂). Seeing the canned sausage brought back memories of my Mama and my step Mamaw canning it while Papaw and Daddy had taken care of the hog. This sausage is so good. My Mama made her biscuit dough very similar to the way you did. I can see it in my mind as I write this and it was like a work of art the way she did it. She never baked biscuits in a cast iron skillet…always on a bread pan. In much later years she stopped cutting out biscuits and when the dough was ready she put it on the bread pan and pressed it into an oval shape with her hands (always used her hands making biscuits). We called this pone bread. It rose and browned so beautifully. We usually just broke off a piece of bread but it could be cut with a knife. This was a time saver and we all loved it. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. This world needs some positive influencers and especially our kids. One day your kids will be having the same kind of sweet memories of you and Andy as these videos do for me. Having it on video is such a great blessing. Next time you make sausage gravy/biscuits, enjoy a helping for your new friend. God bless you in every way! ❤🙏🏻

Try self rising flour, buttermilk, and mayo. That's it! Stir it in a bowl adding flour or buttermilk a little at a time until it's dry enough to stick together. Flour a counter, cutting board, or whatever. Knead it a little, adding a little flour if it sticks to your fingers. Make a ball and start rolling it with a rolling pin. It should be elastic and try to go back to the center as you roll it. Roll it as thick or thin as you want and cut them out with a biscuit cutter, tin can, glass, anything. Spray a pan and put them in it with sides touching. Bake to desired browness on 400 degrees. I brush mine with butter as soon as they come out. Just about no fail!

A lot of people my parents age grew up during the depression. Things like milk were scarce so it was water gravy for many of them, including my Mom. But my Dad and his family farmed. Always plenty of milk because they had cows. I grew up on milk gravy so that's the only kind I make for breakfast.

How do you make gravy with water? The answer is, you can’t. That’s not gravy. That’s some kind of slop.
@bradlane3662
@bradlane3662 6 ай бұрын
@@mark-wn5ek That's kinda cruel. Traditionally, poor people in the Appalachias and actually all over this country with lots of hungry kids to feed had to do the best they could with what they had. It was done a lot during the depression. Eggs, a pan of biscuits, and water gravy, maybe flavored with a little meat grease if they had it, could fill a lot of bellies. Do you cook? Are you aware that most gravies made for chicken, turkey, or even beef for supper or holiday meals is usually made from water flavored with the meat. You know. Broth. Slop? Have you ever been poor? Obviously not.

People invented sifting flour back when weevils would hatch out in flour. I haven’t seen a weevil or silverfish since the 1980s. They used to get out of the flour & boxes of mix & into the cabinets. Silverfish would leave behind shed skins everywhere. I think the companies radiate the flour now to kill any eggs & bugs before they can start spreading into it.

I am drooling over your dough bowl. And have always wanted one of my own. But I wan't a real one. One hand made by someone that knows what they are doing, made from wood that is suitable for the task and safe for food. Most I see are just for decor and made out of who knows what and from who knows where. Same for the ones that I find in antique malls and flea markets. No used ones for me, unless I know the life of it. Who knows what it would have been exposed too. Hen nest? rats nest? food trough for barn animals, etc. LOL Oh and can you tell me the measurements of your dough bowl? And what kind of wood it is made out of?
