We are a ministry family with 7 kids on an incredibly limited budget. We live in an 104 year old rental home. Most of our furniture and appliances are mix matched hand me downs. Practically speaking, if our possessions are minimal and tidied, and our space is generally clean (within reason of course) then I am happy. Sure, I'm tempted to look around at what others have and feel like we don't measure up. But then God reminds me to be grateful. Look again. When your fridge broke, look at the one Keith gave you. Look at the furniture your family gets to sit on for a movie night. The dining room table you gather around that was gifted because you helped friends move. Our God is so good and faithful and there are so many in this world who go without.

Families like yours are some of the happiest I’ve observed! :) It’s a wonderful way to shape a child’s character if treated with the right attitude. My dad always had a really good job, but we lived quite frugally when I was little and I am so thankful!

I enjoy listening to the two of you. My "starter home" was my husband's grandparents' home that grandpop built himself. They raised their three sons here. We bought it feom grandmom when she could no longer live in it. It was supposed to be a home we were in starting out and it turned out that it is our "forever home." We also raised a family here and our daughter is now grown. It has always sheltered us in the storm, kept us warm, and the very walls and floors are filled with three generations of love and laughter. I couldn't ask for more.

Love this topic. After moving into an "older" house after living in new builds was an adjustment. I didn't think I could make it feel like a home. But with some paint and being intentional about making the decor feel like me, this house feels way more homey than the others did. It's about your attitude and those small things to make the space yours.

Omgosh, I love this episode SO much! So much yes! The decluttering dopamine rushes, moving furniture, thrifting, the desire to have a highly functional kitchen (slowly getting there). I especially relate to Jayna. Dirty floors torture me so much. I cannot handle debris sticking to my feet 😂 and the cleared off counters❤ So many other things you mentioned, too. I feel like you're my friends and I wish I could chat with you both in real life. I needed this video today. Keep em coming, please! ❤

I love listening to you two. I also don’t like glass shower doors but have it. I use norwex descaler on shower doors works very well, also a friend of mine told me that when caulk looks moldy just dig it out and clean it and recaulk it with clear caulk and that’s what we did. It made a world of difference. I also put a rounded shower curtain on top of doors and shower curtain in front of doors. Like it a lot better.

Really appreciated this episode. It is so important 'to love where you are at'. Before we moved we lived in a lovely small house with a tiny kitchen and at the time there was no thought to moving, so I made do and I decluttered and rearranged my kitchen to make it seem like a different room. Now I live in a lovely new home and I have taken my organisation to the next level and I am making it look pretty.

I also liked the comment about remembering your home in heaven. Thank you for reminding me that although this rental apartment is not my forever home, I can still improve it and make it feel better. All of us are only in our “temporary homes” whether we are renting or are homeowners. Your wholesome encouragement in this series is so refreshing. This was so good. My sister and I have been having this same conversation. We talk about how growing up, our parents and our friends parents bought solid furniture, as they saved. They lived in the same home their entire lives and updated, when it was necessary or practical for their family. No one was updating a $80k kitchen because the just wanted too. I have 7 kids and my sister has 5. We are fortunate to have nice homes, but they reflect our personal taste, not a social media picture. I enjoyed this perspective.

Thank you for bringing up this topic. Living in a rented house where buying our own isn’t an option right now has been a huge source of frustration for me. I’ve had this perception that because the house is rented I can’t make changes but that’s simply not true. Recently we’ve been able to make small changes such as repainting the walls, new sofas, rug, cushions and reducing our inventory has made a massive difference. I’ve been on a journey learning that feeling safe is not only a fundamental need but a core value for me and having a cluttered home made it feel unsafe and place that stressed me out. Another thing I do is when a part of my home is bothering me I pray and ask God to provide a practical solution. He always comes through. Sometimes is a case of rearranging the furniture, or someone gives me just the right item or it’s simply a perspective change. You girls have inspired me to push forward with other areas of my home I need to finishing painting and thing about some of the details.

I love your honesty. I also really needed the reminder. I tend to not invite people over because I feel like my home is 'too small'. You have inspired me to host more and to overcome my feelings of not having enough. One of the things I have done is actually deep cleaning the bathroom. I clean the grout between the tiles regularly because it makes the whole room look so much fresher (and it honestly is not that much work with a toothbrush and some water). Also adding better lightning really changes the room.

Internet and this world need more of down to earth, realistic, loving and kind mums like you girls! I just love love love the level of honesty that you have while talking about life. I don't find a lot of ladies being honest about thrifting as you girls were in this video. I also often find the smell in those kind of shops discussing and the fact that the other people used those things make me want to wash it 7 times before thinking of using it myself and if you shop well and look for deals and buy what you actually need often times you can get new things on sale and save money by not thrifting every Saturday morning. But other then that, I look forward to every episode and I really enjoy what you do! Keep it up! You won't believe you have Croatian sisters listening in 😀

Jayna~I’m trying to think of drama…I just can’t! You two are a blast to listen to and I didn’t want it to end either. I love this topic. We live in the basement of my mother’s home. It is finished with a kitchen, bedroom/office suite, MBR and family room/dining area. We see the benefits of living here as I am on disability and now my mother needs an in-home caregiver. We have worked hard to make our space our home, reflecting our personality. It hasn’t always been easy, but we appreciate the shelter, the warmth, the coziness of it all. One thing that I think adds to the warmth of a home is layering textures/textiles. An afghan on the sofa or chair, the centerpiece on the table, fresh flowers-for sure!-, diffuser going or candle, photos on the walls and sitting on the tables; all great ways to soften a space and welcome in friends and family. I loved Megan’s tip on using lamps vs the overhead. Need to try that where I can. BTW: I think organization would be a wonderful future topic! Thanks to you both for all you do; you’re a bright spot in my day when your videos go up!😊

We live in a home built in the 1980s. It’s very dated with its light fixtures and finishings. Usually, I’m wishing we had more trendy and modern looking finishes, but after hosting for a day and getting told multiple times “your home is so welcoming! I loved being here”, I realized that maybe if our house was pristine and modern and all up-to-date, people would feel intimidated by it instead of so comfortable in it and THAT thought has made me appreciate my grandma-floral wallpaper border in my kitchen and all the brassy, dated light fixtures so much. I truly love our home and I love the feeling I get in our home and the feeling others get in our home as well. ❤️ This was such a fun chat! Thanks for sharing, ladies! Also, thrifting is my JAM! Probably 90% of the stuff/clothes/etc in our home is thrifted. But, I am all about the hunt 😄

If you have a tub with glass doors and tracking, it’s an amazingly quick fix to remove the tracking and doors. We did that on our old tub, and added a curved shower rod and it made all the difference! Eventually we re-did the bathroom but it was a pretty easy fix for those awful doors!

Dear Jayna and Megan... I've been around here for awhile...I think I've listened to all your Honey I'm Homemaker episodes and I love them! Megan, your channel is such a blessing to me! Even though I'm not Mennonite, we have many similar beliefs. I'm a mama to a one year old little boy and also live in a big old house. We actually only moved in last December. We don't even use the living and dining area because we don't have enough furniture yet (we've only been married two years, so still newlyweds!). Keeping our home clean is a lot of work and the only way I manage is to do specific tasks on specific days. Keeping on top of things also helps! I'm just so grateful for my home after being in a teeny tiny, unfinished home for our first year and a half of marriage. Like Jayna, I also can't stand dirty floors...of the kitchen floor is clean, I feel so much better! Same with the countertops! Thanks for this episode, it encouraged me to love our home and do what I cam to make it cosy! Thank you! Blessings and love, Kelly-Anne from South Africa

Okay- house tip- decorate with the things you love- pictures from vacation and loved ones, little objects from family who have gone to heaven. We don’t have to all have the same style or buy all our decor at Hobby Lobby. Of course, this takes time. 24+ years of marriage. I love to surround myself with things that make me thank God.

Loved this! My husband and I are about to close on our first home. We've always rented because he was in the military. What helps me keep a positive attitude about a less than perfect space is to see it through my children's eyes. My kids don't care if the decor matches perfectly or if there's a cobweb or if half our furniture is hand me downs, but they do care that home is a safe and loving place where we can be a family. They help me focus on the things that matter. ❤️

Fun fact, it's my son that is the king of thrifting now! He is 24. My daughter is 23 and both hit the shops when they are in bigger cities! So I am proud of them both. We do have a rule though.... clothing comes into the house and straight to the dryer for 45 minutes (checking for bed-bugs) then straight to the washer, and dry again before wearing!

Put a shelf on the wall that I got at TJ Maxx and put all my spices in mason jars (looks very cute!) . I got a coat rack that hangs over a door and that turned into my pot rack for my skillets. Also hung several of my big pots/cast iron on the wall and that doubles as storage and decor! Finally I painted my old cabinets and now I'm very happy with my kitchen! We are currently mid-reno and will add 6 more feet to that. But I am so grateful for being forced to keep a minimal kitchen all these years. One purpose gadgets have no place in my kitchen and in the long run, I don't think they save any time.

I do love hearing your talks and think you both do a great job. I hope to educate about our world and how we can allow or encourage the unsafe, unpaid and harmful clothing industry just so we can have easy and cheap options to buy, as well as the harm on our environment. Thanks for another episode

I’m in the mini van, microwave above the stove, thought goodwill smelled like the combination of all the stuff too, club! 💜 My house was built in the late forties and I appreciate and love it more today because of the decluttering I’ve done through the years. This was a fun topic to be a part of.

Thank you for bringing this topic into light. Although we don't follow 'the Jones', it's difficult sometimes feeling like things should be just so when you see & hear how things 'should be' on social media. I love your channel Megan because you're real and not pushing on how things 'should be' or change this because that's not in style anymore.. If we followed what was in style we would be changing up our house every week. Thank you again for sharing❤️

Love you girls!!!! Jayna I am right there with you on thrifting. Not so much home goods but clothes no thank you! And I agree with Megan; I look at stuff and think, I just cleaned out my house and I am not going to bring this stuff back in!! I have lived in our home for 43 years and I still love it. Over time we have done quite a bit of improvements. I would love a brand new home but I doubt it is in the cards. Our home is a 1979 ranch style and we added a great room 25 years ago that we love. I don't follow trends, I decorate how I like with antiques, primitives, used furniture, etc. Thank you for your video as I always enjoy you both!!!!

Thanks for sharing,I enjoy listening to you ladies. I think it's so important to have a clean and organized home and make it a cozy place for your family to come home to. Like Megan said,a safe Haven. So important, I think everything else goes so much better in life if you can come home to a clean, cozy space. I agree with Jayna, I don't like to go thrifting for clothes... But I do go thrifting for other items. 😊

I have found that if our home is “us” & it is welcoming you will have people wanting to come over! I prefer entertaining in my home to going out to eat all the time. As hospitality is one of my gifts I always keep my home picked up & try to dress for the day. Always have something I can serve & can make coffee or serve a cold drink. You girls are great at that! Loved this video! May clean up my bedroom this week. I love books so need to clear that!

One thing that always helps me change a space in my home is paint!! Paint the room, the cabinets, the shelving…it always makes a room new and fresh to then hang new decorations and rugs…or just declutter and shop from your own space…I also like being minimal with my decorating then it’s nots closing in on you and light and airy!! Spring is the perfect time for a new change inside and outside on a patio or deck…ensuring as you walk in…thanks for the chat it is motivating for sure now that spring is around the corner!!! 🙏💕👍🇺🇸😊

I love listening to the two of you interact. You remind me of my sister and myself 25 years ago. Biggest tip for a successful home is to differentiate between what can be changed and what isn't possible at that moment... then learn to be content and enjoy what God has given you. ❤️

This episode made me smile. 😊 Gratitude certainly helps when it comes to not having the latest and greatest home, as well as trusting the Lord has you where he wants you, there's peace in knowing that.

My sliding glass shower doors have been my nemesis. Last week, I tried the basic Barkeepers friend and a wet wash rag... amazing! It worked so well! Then, I put RainX on it, and it is so much easier to keep up. I hope this helps, Jana!

We recently moved to our new, yet vintage home which we completely renovated. The kitchen balcony was not in our budget so we left it as it was. I love the fact that it's got a sink where you can wash heavy duty, clean veggies and water plants. The floor is terrible though, so I got this long green rug which reminds me of grass to cover it. Plus I put flower pots all around the sink and now it is my little haven. You ladies are special. 🙏💝 Ciao from Rome, Italy

We just upgraded our old kitchen and were THRILLED to finally get a microwave/fan over our stove…it felt so BOUJEE 🤣🤣🤣 One man’s garbage and all that 😂😂 Love you two, you crack me up, thanks for the reminder that I love the home I’ve made. And yes, that “feeling” when you are within it can’t be beat ❤

Team Microwave over the oven here, too! 😂 A pain point in our home was our laundry room. For years, all the organization we had was a wire shelf. It was constantly a mess of laundry products, instruction manuals, and other random items. One day we went to the Restore and picked up 2 old kitchen cabinets for about $50, repainted them and hung them up in there and it has been amazing!! I have so much space to hide away various odds and ends and we even repurposed that wire shelf and it holds my canning jars! 👍🏻

I appreciate windows. We lived in a quantum barn/shop for more than 3 years and only had 3 windows in living area/kitchen so all the room's was so so dark like a cave. We moved into a new house with lots of windows and I'm so so thankful and grateful 🙏

I love these episodes so much! I have barn board walls in my living room and they are so impractical and so not me! But I'm renting and the landlord doesn't want me to paint (make em look like an old white barn) so I have finally just decided I can still make it look homey even if it's not my pick of style walls.

Really enjoy listening to you ladies. There are a few minor things, structurally, that I wish were different about our home. Otherwise, I’m content with being at home and taking care of it. My husband is a Pastor and we live in the parsonage next to our church. It’s about 50 years old. Over the past 18 years, there have been updates and improvements. We feel very blessed. I agree that this is not my permanent home and I’m looking forward to my eternal home! God bless you both! 😀❤️

Jayna, I was surprised how economical a professional window washer is here in Peoria AZ. Also, the windows on our house are so huge, the window washer cleaned them inside and out and all the screens in so little time. So worth it! 😊

Also reminding that this is our temporary home and God has so much more waiting for us! I’ll bet He won’t have microwaves over the stove either! LOL

Side comment….. I agree with you Gina about thrifted kids clothes. My daughter is now 15 but when she was in preschool, I went to Goodwill to get clothes for preschool, it took time to find decent tops & bottoms then I was in Walmart doing my weekly shopping and saw brand new mix & match Geranimals toddler clothes were cheaper (and new) then the thrifted clothes. She went through the entire sizing range of those Granimals until she could no longer fit in them. So sometimes thrifted items are not better. Home decor though….that’s a whole other subject! LOL
