No Energy to wash and style your wavy curly hair? No problem! This routine gives you a break from the rigmarole of scrunching and diffusing while maintaining the health of your waves and curls. On days when my Rheumatoid Arthritis is really flaring or I am just flat tired, I reach for this routine. I am grateful for all the tips and tricks I have learned from the curly girl method that have gotten my hair to the point where I can do so little to it and it looks half decent.

I do want to mention that after this routine I can go right back to styling my hair wavy curly and it springs right up! Brushing it out straight and air drying dose not adversely effect my curl pattern at all!

My go to for “energy efficient” styling is washing then putting it in a couple braids 😂 i keep the braids in for a couple days, then wear it wavy until I absolutely have to wash again. Theres my wash week 😂

This was so validating for me. I can't tell you the number of times that I've done washing with the suave professionals natural hair shampoo which you recommended, and then the Cantu conditioner that you also recommended, with a little bit of squish to condition, and then that's it. That's all I can manage. And my hair really doesn't look that bad, still wavy. Thanks for sharing that you do this sometimes to, or at least your version of a product free wash day. Thinking about you and praying for your family and your little girl.

When I air dry, I tie a silk scarf around my neck so that I have friction-free sitting wherever I am. I can just pull the ends to lie between my hair and the couch, but when I stand up, the scarf just comes along!

As someone who’s really been struggling with ADHD executive dysfunction, I really appreciate this. For some reason it’s just been really hard for me to get in the shower in time to style my hair the way I used to, so I’ve been blowing it out and straightening it a lot more than I should lately.

This really came at the perfect time. I've been feeling super discouraged by my transition phase and decided to take a break from styling until 2022. The challenge is to make sure I'm keeping my hair healthy and hydrated because it craves moisture like no other 😂 Also, it was really encouraging to see how your hair looked when you were finger detangling. Seeing how much your clumps broke up made me feel like my tiny clumps weren't bad or ugly or somehow a negative reflection of my hair care skills. This whole video was really encouraging, and I really needed that 🥰

Thank you for posting such an honest video on how exhausting dealing with wavy hair can be and that you don't always have to do the most! It turns out the world will not end if I my hair doesn't look perfect! Crazy, huh? hahaha I have watched this video so many times - every single time I've hit that wall where I just wanted to do anything BUT style my hair and try so hard. This has kept me from just going ahead and straightening it into oblivion! Hope life is amazing with the new baby girl!

When I don't feel up to styling after a wash I do a deep side "part" brushed back (no defined part) and I shake it at the root a bit and tuck the sides that fall in my face behind my ears to keep it out of the way. When it's dry enough on the one side I switch the deep part and repeat the shake and ear tuck. I have really tight curls from root to chin where my bangs would be so I don't mind the ear tuck because it waves those otherwise curly annoying bits.

I recently cut my hair to a chin length bob, and when I got it cut the stylist asked if my hair got curlier when it’s shorter. I said yes because.. yes? But turns out, no! Somehow since getting it cut this short length it’s barely curly at all, and honestly I kind of love it? I miss my spirals and ringlets, but I’ve been loving that I’m able to have such a simple routine! So much less stress every day!

I’m having a product free day today. I still plopped but didn’t do more than min squishing while in the shower. I plopped for a long time and then ran my finger through my hair when it was dry. Im surprised at how nice it still looks today. It won’t last as long before I have to wash again. Mousse at the roots really helps keep the oil at bay, but it’s easy and nice to do sometimes. Im going product free because my scalp is giving me problems and nothing else is working.

Professional and higher end shampoos won't suds up the first time you shampoo because sebum inhibits the sudsing bubbling action. But if you lather, rinse, repeat the suds will happen on the second shampoo. If you get a lot of suds the second time you can know your scalp is clean because the sebum isn't stopping the suds anymore. This is why you're supposed to shampoo twice, but since people associate suds with cleaning lots of drugstore shampoos add so much harsh surfactants to so that suds happen no matter what.

Before I started my curly-hair / healthy-hair journey, I used to be able to do that twist bun and just... tuck the tips into the bottom of the bun. No elastic. It would just *stay there* because of the friction from having such damaged/dry hair cuticle. Oof.

Right now I'm struggling between having nice waves with enough hold and my waves being stringy (happens with hard hold gels). My product-free routine was almost the same as yours (only thing I didn't do was not using leave-in conditioner). Do you think not brushing wet/damp hair in this routine and finishing it with an alcohol-free, silicone-free serum would allow 2a waves to last through several days?

Suds are not necessary for your hair to be clean! You don't need more product necessarily. Without all of those things in the shampoo, it's NOT going to lather like you're used to. Just enough to clean the scalp is fine. If you feel you need more to clean the mid to ends, then fine. Do what makes you feel good. But it's not necessary unless you're clarifying. Also, for my hair specifically, when I get a good slip, I lose all of the curl. Because my hair is 70% silver, that doesn't want to curl as much as the rest. I have absolutely straight parts in the front where I'm 100% silver. This will curl if it's not over-conditioned. With conditioner? It's completely flat. I have baby hair and honestly, the silver isn't coming in much more thick. It's porous by default, but it still can't take conditioner. Even a light one, unless it's a conditioning shampoo. Silver shampoo, even the Walmart brand, works well. Wella also has a conditioning shampoo that works well. I tried the Kinky Curly line. LOVE the clarifying shampoo, but the conditioner, even if I rinse it out, is too much. The gel is also too heavy and too loaded with oils. Weird, huh? I get great curls when my hair is on the dry side and almost nothing when it's conditioned. I always have to be different.

My hair turns puffy as it dries if I don’t use any gel. Drives me nuts. It’s not actually frizzy, it’s more like the hairs repel away from each other. I’ve never seen any CG influencers touch on this problem either. We can’t be the only ones, FFS.

I am struggling right now with my hair! My curl pattern is...odd: The top 3/4ths is straight/barely wavy, then the ends naturally just curl into ringlets. If I twist my hair around my finger, it will stay in that shape for a while on its own as if I curled it. (My dad has the same pattern, and so does my daughter.) I have tried everything; plopping, twisting, scrunching, arranging it piece by piece, waiting till it's dry, yadda yadda. As soon as I scrunch the gel cast out of my hair, any curl that I managed to summon into being on the top part of my hair immediately falls flat, and it looks like I haven't just spent literal hours on my hair. It's frustrating to the point of tears and I just want to give up! To make it more difficult, I am a SAHM to three autistic kids, and when they need me, they need me, whether I'm in the middle of doing my hair or not. It's so easy to talk myself out of even trying right now, because "it's not going to work anyway and I might as well not take that time away from my kids."
@sweettea1193

You've just described my own hair perfectly. My roots and the top part of my hair is like 2A and no matter what I do, the roots will not curl. My ends are spirals and ringlets and it looks weird, like I took a curling iron and just curled my ends and nothing else. I'm sure that's what people think and I've just come to accept it. It's a weird look but I'm too old to care. Let ppl think I only curled my ends, lol

Have you tried just leaving it natural- meaning no products? I have wavy hair (between 2a-2b) and tried every product out there. I really couldn’t find anything that either didn’t weigh my hair down or gave me really weird, uneven texture. I can definitely get a lot of defined waves, but the roots or anything underneath are barely 2a. So I started just squeezing and patting my hair dry afterwards.

?? I realize this video was posted a year ago, but I'm hopeful you'll see my question and have an answer or someone else will. My issue is I don't have time for it to air dry. If I wash after work, it's still wet by bedtime and damp in the morning. If I blow dry, it whips around and becomes a tangled mess. Diffuse, a puff ball. I have an attachment to blow it straight. It kinda works, but seems like a lot of heat and takes a good bit of time to get dry. I have a 6 week old and will be returning to work soon enough. I need a better solution and really do not want to a do big chop as my hair is finally growing with improvised CGM. It's to my mid-back.

@@SwavyCurlyCourtney I have tried that, for some reason still makes my scalp irritated. That and for some reason most leave in conditioners make my hair break more. Doesn't matter what I use

When I try to do this my hair just poofs up! How can I prevent this? I feel like it happens when I brush my hair after showering

In that case I would try the twists while your air dry. Or putting it up in a bun overnight to smooth everything down. 🤗

My hair gets poofy when I don’t style it too. I just accept that my unstyled hair is for buns or for staying at home. 😂

Her hair looked absolutely lovely! But I feel like she did some unnecessary steps here. I don’t quite understand why she brushed it soaking wet (not so great for your hair), wrapped it in a towel and then re-brushed it. I’d think the easiest thing would be wrapping it, and then letting it air dry. This isn’t meant to be a criticism, it just seems like added work.

As to the detangler, for my hair, what I found to be the best is detangler hair spritz for children. Why did I go there? I have baby hair. So, what I'm seeing in all of the videos I've watched for curly/wavy hair, there is a reason that women would decline a date because they had to do their hair. It's so much work!!! Products, curling, drying, conditioning, hover drying and scrunching (now). I had NO idea until my hair went wavy curly. I'm over all of the work that goes into "perfect" hair. I've never been "that" girl. It's tedious and expensive. What I need is volume at my roots, clean hair, and healthy waves that aren't weighed down by expensive products. If you want to embrace your waves and curls, let your hair speak to you instead of trying to product it into submission. Condition when needed. Add only only the product you need (like anti-frizz or volumizer) and ditch the rest. I'm learning that taking care of wavy/curly hair is a scam. It takes way too much product, at very spendy prices. And that is irritating. Sure, if you have a special occasion, use them! But for everyday? Just stop. Find a product that works for cleaning and conditioning. Quit with all of the BS foam and creams and oils and whatever. I refuse to spend $100 a month on my hair! I don't even wear makeup. I saw a video that reviewed products that sounded great for my hair type, but it was more than $100 a month in product and more than an hour to dry with all of the sectioning, the root volume, and whatever else it took to dry the hair. Yeah, no. My hair is what it is and it will tell me what it needs when it needs it. Too frizzy consistently? Maybe I need a mask on my ends. Too oily at my scalp? I should use a clarifying shampoo and start over. I'm on a well, so it's not just about clearing product, but all of the minerals like calcium and lime and whatever. Itchy scalp from the common seborrhic dermatitis? Use coal tar shampoo, or clarify. (Seborrheic dermatitis means that your scalp gets red and itchy in patches because your scalp hasn't been properly cleaned of oil). Listen to your hair. It will tell you what it needs.

I do this type of wash day from time to time! I put it up into a bun and add a wavy/curly "faux ponytail" to create a beautiful and effortless look. Most people don't even know that it's not my real hair! ☺
