In this video I head out wild camping in the Lake District National Park. It was supposed to be a simple straightforward camping trip to relax and recharge my battery as well as testing out the new Nortent Vern 1 2024 tent. However things got ugly as high winds and rain joined the party as well as some ticks inside my tent.

Hard enough to camp in those conditions, harder still to produce a coherent, technically sound film. Especially as a one man band. Bravo.

Paul I damaged my knee walking the dog about 18months ago, result is I am awaiting knee surgery and until then my capacity to walk any distance is limited. Your videos are like a tonic, they take me to places I can no longer go, and your relaxed conversational manner is like spending time with an old friend. Thank you for doing what you do.

Unless you've been involved in a major accident or already had something serious like rheumatoid arthritis, I'd be very cautious/weary of any surgery. I did my knee out clearing up after rookie builders and my knee was in agony for way over a year. Later I developed plantar fasciitis (right foot first then the left), and that is only just clearing up. But imho, rest and gentle stretches are best, not surgery. Surgery can work, but you have a 50/50 chance of it going wrong too. I can't recommend a good old sports physiotherapist more than the scalpel! Good luck though. It's a bastard for sure, especially if like me, you're pushing 60.

I had to smile at your idea of simple camping compared to the 1970/80s when I was wild camping in the Peaks, Lakes, Alps etc. No contacting the wife by satellite link back then, and karimats were the height of comfort. Love your videos, though. I still camp, but osteoarthritis limits the places I can reach, so I enjoy joining you on trips to some of my old haunts and also many I've never been to.

A friend of mine died as a result of Limes Disease in 2016. I am fastidious in maintaining and proofing my kit. I spray my kit before, during and after use with Permethrin. I seal the tent zips where they meet with a tampon so ticks cannot pass the 2 toggles. I always use a bathtub tent with micro mesh. A good tip is buy a bunch of Dalmatian Chrysanthemum (Giant Daisies) and scatter them around the tent. Ticks hate the chemical they give off.

Years ago I was bitten by a tick in my belly button. I was sick from it for a year. Fortunately no Lyme disease, but I did have some strange things. Heart palpitations. Usually early morning until afternoon. Vomiting often. General feeling of not feeling well.. I am now terrified of ticks.

Old neighbours of ours moved to an 'exclusive' area near Botley Hill, their yougest daughter suffered from a lot of ailments, heart problems, etc. for over a decade. She's only recently been diagnosed with Lymes Disease as the cause, of course they get lots of deer in their garden.

Melbreak is one of my favourite walks. I like to go up the scree from the other end. I never seem to see anyone up there. The view across the central ranges on a clear day is absolutely stunning and you can swing by scale force on the descent and then finish with an easy stroll along the length of Crummock. A lovely little walk that I enjoy immensely every time I do it.

Hi Paul, loving the content buddy. Regarding the fella in the toilets with the fragrances. Yes, you still get them. In some clubs the ladies will be able to straighten their hair in the toilets. Ladies can also buy pumps to walk home in. I got bitten by a tick in Scotland once. I went to my local doctors to inform them and they said ticks don’t exist in the UK. 😂 Didn’t offer any antibiotics or anything, just sent me home and told me to get a grip of myself. I was a lot younger then, I actually pulled the sack of the tick off in panic. I was very worried, but 18 years later, I’m still alive. 😂

Sawyer's Permethrin is your friend...I always treat my hiking clothes regularly. The protection lasts through around 5 - 6 washes before the clothing needs retreating. I also treat external surfaces on my backpack. Grassy areas like you're in will be good habitat for Ticks. When you spot one like that, if you can't just flick it out...could carry a small roll of masking tape in the pocket...just take a piece of tape and dab the tick and should stick to it, then can fold it up trapping it for disposal. Also...two words...Ear Plugs...I carry a pair in my backpack, and greatly helps with tent flapping in wind or rain noise during the night.

Another great video Paul, got to admire your enthusiasm to get out in all weathers. I do like the look of the Nortent, but am struggling to justify adding to the collection of 20 tents I already own 😂 I did think it looked a surprisingly narrow though at the end you had your head at unless that was just the wind bellowing the inner.

The ticks would have me on edge more than the wind. 3 pole geodesic should have no problems with that. That might be a spot where deer rested and the ticks jumped onto the bottom or back of your pack attracted to sweat scent. Check bottom of pack after putting it down in damp herbiage. Leaches will also jump on there. Check all gear when you get home - you don't want a colony in your back yard when shaking or drying gear. Always good to wear gaiters and spray them and boots with strong repellent.

Not far from my home there, just outside ennerdale, I noticed the ticks are out early again, might be another bad year again for them. I will say they do like to nest in those tufts of long grass which they like to climb up on o they can latch on to things that brush past, so I try avoid them when setting up my gear, but its sods law if you get one I suppose. The tent seemed to hold.up.fairly well anyways.

They can surive into very cold temps unfortunately... Not sure what the solution is. Need to find/develop some kind of predictor form them...
