I created some very unique and unusual vases. I went to 5 stores in San Clemente, CA to ask potential shop owners if they would consider placing my vases in their establishments for my marketing research. One of the shops the, the sales personnel gave me a card with the sales personnel's email on the back. When I forwarded the email I noticed that the sales individual did not give me a card with the shop owner's email, which she said it was on the card. I sent the power point presentation of my vases. I called the next day to speak with her to get the owner's email and the owner answered and brushed me off. Well, there I saw what was going on. So asked her about seeing her the next day as planned and she said she had someone who did those type of vases, which I know is untrue. There are definitely no vases made the way I made them. I have been working on the design for over 2 years. No patent. But, I contacted a patent attorney today. He wants to speak with me and wants me to bring him some of the vases. He's not charging me as well for the consultation. I listened to your video and I'm hoping we could do an attorney sponsored type deal. Thanks for your input. Suppose you go with the provisional patent, can you still partner up with a lawyer in that case during that 12 mo period? I am wondering if they would be less interested in partnering up because the process is already rolling. Is a person required to prove that their invention actually does what they say it will do, before they can get a patent?

its maddening that its so expencieve and needlessly complicated to patent, and that even with a good patent it's so expensive to defend your IP, basically saying that invention is a game only for those with existing capitol.

My idea will definitely make money & save lives.

No point in getting a patent if you can't afford the court costs to defend your patent.(you probably can't) Patents are for people with lots of money and good lawyers. If you don't fit that criteria, then forget about it.

What to stop a lawyer from stealing your idea if you have no protection on your idea?

I hear that some Canadian universities offer partnering help to their alumni. The concept is similar to partnering with a law firm. I have not investigated this option since I do not belong to alumni.

I find it interesting how the legal system has found a way of letting others come up with ideas and then legally stealing them of their profits.Some ideas have a lot to them many patents lots of fees.....

How about filing a PPA, getting it approved, then, in the next year, looking for a lawyer or promotion firm with whom to partner on a contingency basis. The upside is that you have some recourse if they say "no thanks", then try to steal the idea. The downside is that if you botch the PPA, it might doom your chances of ever getting a patent that's worth anything.

The one thing I never understood or figured out is why in the world does it cost around $50,000.00 to complete and get a professional patent? I mean it is mainly professional paper work and not hard manual labor! And mainly, what if you are just plain and simply poor and dont have the money to start out new as an inventor? It just seems like a rediculous amount of money to file and protect your idea or trademark.

Will a provisional patent protect me within that years period? An idea would be to crowd fund with a kicker campaign to gain some money. Doing that however would potentially spark some ingenuity for people to steal the product. Will the provisional protect me within the proof of concept phase?
