The Type seven and Type nine were the striking force of the Kriegsmarine during the Battle of the Atlantic - a German attempt to cut off the British Isles and force the Allies to surrender.
In the first years of war, the Germans used them to cut off supply lines that were bringing weapons and equipment from the United States to United Kingdom.
When attacking, German U-boats were using so called “Wolfpack” tactic.

Mostly because Hitler has little hope for the Kriegmarine because he had never been educated in naval warfare. during WW2, most of the state budget went to the Luftwaffe and the Wehrmacht as they are set in high priority for land and air war against other European nations, the Kriegmarine more or less only picked up the remaining scraps of the budget due to little actions it faced. Despite that, it still brought a good fight to the Allies. However, after occupying France, Hitler wanted a concrete plan for an amphibious invasion on Britain, but he had to scrap the idea because the kriegs simply didn't have the capability due to budget shortage. After that was the continuous indecisive battles and the scandalous sinking of the Bismarck, Hitler no longer believed the Kriegmarine deserves any more budget for operation.

@Fender Player are you sure? it has been confirmed that Hitler thought very little of the navy and even proposed a plan to get rid of most if not all of his surface Vessels, granted he was talked out of it. The very fact he proposed that idea is very informative on his views of the Navy

@@Luis-be9mi Design issues still were worst problem - first U-boats couldn't fire torpedoes in submerged state, and those were majority of submarines Germany produced. Batteries were rather unstable and prone to exploding, if sea water gets to them. Combat performance also left much to be desired - where regular ships could repair damage and remain floating, U-boat would just sink, as you can't repair submarine hull in the sea, and can't even submerge to escape your enemies.

We found out at my grandpa's funeral in the 90's from his old war buddy that they tangled up with these things in the coast guard right off the east coast in a yacht equipped with depth charges and small arms. I don't know if they sank any or not, but it seems rather fortunate they even survived. I'm glad his old friend was loose lipped, because it wasn't quite declassified by then, and if he hadn't told us we'd never have known.
