On the morning of the 14th of April 1945, U-1206, one of the last German U-boats to be commissioned, was cruising at a depth of 200 feet, just off the coast of Scotland, about eight to ten miles from Peterhead in Aberdeenshire.
They had been experiencing a few difficulties, such as the U-boats diesel engines not operating correctly, forcing it to run on battery power, so the crew were busy making repairs.
What happened next can arguably be considered one of the strangest demises for a vessel in naval history.

Seriously though, for submarine disasters, having 46 of 50 crew survive is quite impressive & lucky. Considering the survival rate of late war uboats as a whole, this toilet might have actually saved the crews lives vs death by depth charge or mine.

Managed to live a long life, it was pretty much a one-way trip for the U-boats at that stage of the war. I use to fly helicopters in support of offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico. I was based in Freeport, south of the base, on the beach, when the tides when out there were the remains of a german u-boat. I use to fly over it every now and again. There is another lost U-boat sunk very close to Block Island in RI- early in my flying career before helicopters- I have flown airplanes to there a lot in the 1970s.
