Petrol is expensive! In 3 days I converted my petrol car to electric using what I think is the strangest yet simplest EV conversion technique. In this video, I'm going to walk you through how I converted the car, and show you all the modifications I made to the engine using a toy model.
This technique gives the car power steering and air conditioning without any additional motors! Leaving in half the engine saves you the time, money and effort it would take to pull out the engine and machine out motor mounts and brackets.
The converted car uses a single 6kW, 72V BLDC motor connected to a 350A Kelly Controller. In the trunk, you will find the 72V 100Ah Lithium Ferrophosphate (LFP) battery.
To retain power braking, I did have to add an electric brake booster vacuum pump to the car, to provide the brake booster with the vacuum it needs to assist you during braking. Also, since we don't have an alternator in the car anymore, I used a 72-12V DC-DC convertor to bring the 72V from the LFP battery in the back down to 12V to charge the lead acid battery to power the central locks, power windows, and the car's lights.
While the performance of a conversion like this would benefit from a larger motor and battery, the current specs produce the perfect city car - with a top speed of 60Km/h and a range of 80-90Km - you'll fit right into the Gurgaon traffic! Best of all, the car costs you less than ₹1/Km to run!
I really hope you enjoy this video and would love your thoughts and feedback in the comments! Please feel free to reach out to me for any questions you may have - I would love nothing more than to be a part of your switch from dinosaur bones to electric power!

From Peter H. Its truly amazing what he did. But could he have just added the electric motor but left the pistons in place. That would be a hybrid. He could use minimal gas but mainly electric until the battery ran out. Then all gas.

They’re not that expensive when compared with their ICE counterparts. You can get a Model Y for like $34,000 after the tax credit. A credit which can be applied to the purchase price of the vehicle. Take that and another $100-200 off for gas and it’s as affordable as a $23,000 vehicle. And that’s brand new.

Once LFP battery crunch reduces in 2-3 years as domestic production starts coming up, I am sure we will see a lot of these conversions becoming popular for urban use. If the conversion cost is low then one doesn't mind changing engine oil every 10 thousand kilometres but this was a really cool and out of the box conversion . If you could get better batteries, better finishing, tweak the performance up a notch and replace the fuel tank with an IP 68 battery pack , this could very easily transform into a flourishing business of conversion kits , like it is with CNG conversion kits.

That's true, the engine oil would work even longer than 10k kms as there is no combustion happening, so no heat or combustion gases or fuel to degrade the oil. There are a lot of ways to build an electric car, but it all boils down to how much money is spent. The key is ingenuity, people in developed countries have access to funding and parts which are not available everywhere in the world.

The fact that he's able to do this with a relatively tiny battery because of a Gearbox, tells me that there's space in the EV sector for Manuals, IF enthusiasm for Manual cars persists. Not only that, if pairing an EV with a transmission means you don't need as powerful motors or batteries, it means that EVs can be more efficient and even more environmentally friendly because you won't need the huge battery packs. Am i crazy or is there a future for the transmission here?

my 2 cents ... xmission will hardly make a difference as in motor peak torque is immediately available in case of engine torque is gradually developed so is the power and hence you need transmission manual or automatic with multiple gears for various reasons only possible benefit of an transmission for ev would be in my opinion for inclines or slopes if u dont want the hill climb n hill hold n other modern tech

This is a really bad idea overall, the conversion is only to showcase what can be done. The battery will have a very low life expectancy, it charges slowly and the whole conversion is a joke. The airpump to brake is one of the worst ideas in there, with huge scary implications, the chance of electrical fires is oof the charts with the way this is done, the gearshaft is going to have a bad time with the way it is used and so so many more.. for the cost to fix all these, go research other PROPER conversion kits..

@@rajanathanc5468 this conversion is not efficient BUT still much better than petroleum based cars in many ways , including environment & human lives. have you EVER wondered about the carbon & other footprints of 1) digging oil well 2) refining 3) transporting oil - oil spills in the sea 4) transport upto your petrol pump 5) the waste lubricating oil every quarter. now ! an electric car with 10 kW motor can give you sufficient speed for city rides. ( this has ONLY about 5 kW). 5 kW will consume less than 7 units of energy to go 80 km. ( this system being less efficient , may consume 9-10 units max). compare it with the petrol car , giving a mileage of 16 km/litre ; it will consume 5 litre petrol for the same 80 km journey ! now, even thermal power plants (coal based ) are more than 90% efficient. & no country being bombed e.g. Libya or Iraq ( or Ukraine if you think about it ) & no funding of a terrorist state like Pakistan by the petrodolar economy. now , think outside the propaganda created by the petrodollar , God bless !

Since the car is being powered from the camshaft pulley to the crankshaft via the timing belt, will the load and forces applied be too great for the components to handle? Good point! With only an 8 hp motor, it's probably fine. With higher output, the motor would need to take the place of the crankshaft. He could achieve this with a dual output elec motor.

Definitely want to add regen braking in some capacity though. Not sure it's worth doing the mod in the long run though, as all the extra weight really isn't nessisary, not just the lower part of the block, but the radiator and everything as well. I think it'd be worth finding a way to just keep the gearbox, and hook up the motor to the drive shaft directly.
@marsrover001
@marsrover001 11 ай бұрын
Regen is just fancy engine braking. The controller just needs to know when to start regen. Probably tap the brake light switch and that's it. Unfortunately Regen isn't the magic range extending bullet people think it is. Over the entire battery charge and city driving you'll get around 3-5% extra charge. The bigger advantage is less brake pad wear. But given the funky setup where the whole car is powered through a belt here I would just eat the 3% due to reliability.

@@marsrover001 Dude what? Regen gives you back 50%+ of the energy it took to get you going in the first place.
@zxcvbnmasdfghjkl51
@zxcvbnmasdfghjkl51 10 ай бұрын
@@streetguru9350 This information seems incomplete. If you are speeding up and slowing down all the time, maybe regen is worth it. But if you speed up to a certain speed, then maintain that speed for a long time, then slow down, the only energy you get back is the "50%+" as you say of the energy you used to accelerate. As Marsrover001 said, that sounds about 3-5% extra range.

You might want to consider converting the timing belt over to a chain with sprockets. Also, if you are still using the bottom part of the engine, is there some way engine oil is still being circulated to keep the crankshaft bearings lubricated?

I also don't think it has enough range for a normal driver. 80 kilometers isn't enough for most people. And I also think it can be used outside a city. It's basically an electric grocery getter. You know what also fits that description. And electric golf cart. Which you can get for cheaper than a car and 3 thousand dollar EV conversion.

This is fascinating. I would love to adapt this idea to my 1977 RV. However, when thinking about converting to electric, I noticed that heavier vehicles sometimes use dual EV motors, one for the front and one for the rear. I wonder if you used your form of EV conversion in the front, could you use the same setup in the back as well (parts of an ICE engine and the new EV motor) or could/would you use just an EV motor for the rear? Would both setups allow you to steer the front and back separately? I don't see how they would since an EV motor only setup doesn't use the gearbox, so it seems like the two setups would be in conflict. Also, manufacturers, use traction inverters, is that any different than the inverter you used? Is the term "traction inverter" a buzzword or does it actually mean something? Do you think your conversion would work the same if the car had been an automatic?

Nice job! One thing you may want to be careful about is the "engine oil" getting water in it. Normally that water gets boiled off when the engine gets hot, but since that will no longer happen, the water will build up. The risk is that the water can dilute the oil, as well as cause rust/corrosion.

Since the engine is still rotating the crank pulley, do you have the oil pump in operation to keep things lubricated? Also, it would be fairly straightforward to put a more powerful electric motor on there. 30 or 40 horsepower would make the car absolutely drivable (the first Citroen was only 9hp, but it was very small car).
