Shot shaping vs. Playing Higher Percentage Straight Shots-Master Draw & Fade Shots like Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau and other Pros with This Tour-Level Technique (if you need to shape shots). Todd Graves presents his method for ball curvature using a Callaway Mavrik 3 Wood, while also giving a case study from Medinah #9 for playing higher percentage shots with a straight ball flight, allowing for lower handicaps from consistent ball-striking.

I subscribed long time ago and watch lots of your post because of Moe Norman. But this post I had not seen. It made me smile and laugh when you were talking about drawing the ball and how low you had to come around on it felt but when you laughed about it, you sounded exactly how Moe laughed when he felt he was talking about something ridiculous. A great testament to the great golfer.

Todd,I definitely needed these tips on why NOT to try to shape shots and to always play the best percentage shot, eg. get back to the fairway from trouble. THANK YOU so much for these great golfing tips.

Even if you don't intend to hit draws and fades, it's important to know the ball flight laws and the little changes in the swing that can help you diagnose and correct a particular miss if things are going awry.

The part around 11:00 is the best takeaway from this lesson! I think I heard the Moe tip from another one of your videos "don't play AROUND the course but THROUGH the course (on a straight path)". I need to make that mantra my priority and only attempt the draw or fade around trees/obstructions when necessary.

I used Jack’s book to base most of my game on, he just accepted the shape he had. Which was what I did. This swing method though makes me straight but occasionally I get a little out of shape and it’s interesting to see what promotes that shape, as that is the fault. Enjoying the content, my back is feeling unstressed, my ball speed is up, and my 5 iron is straight and long ... something my old swing did not allow! I was even considering putting my 1 iron back in my bag, but I won’t.

I hit my irons really straight but I tend to pull or over fade it. Having played a more traditional swing for so many years, this is a good video. I think I can use this as to know how to work it with single plane and almost reverse engineer straight ball by knowing what caused curve.

Your lesson today brings to mind the H.L. Mencken quote: "There is always a well-known solution to every human problem - Neat, Plausible, and Wrong. Only you could substitute the 'every human problem,' and replace it with 'every golf problem.' All of the fading, drawing, low/high, escape shots, "solutions," that most ham & egg golfers - myself included - obsess over (and are emphasized, by the way, in popular golf magazines/media), are Neat, Plausible and VERY WRONG. Thanks for the clear eyed lesson.

I have been absorbing your content every day for a month now, followed by hitting balls every day if possible. I feel like I actually have something to work towards now instead of just following wild guesses for the conventional golf swing. I’ve made improvements to my grip and have overall improved, the score card show it yet though. My biggest problem I am having with the single plane swing so far is hooking my irons and 50/50 chance of hooking the driver or hitting a straight shot that just goes out to the right by 30 yards. My wedges and short irons are my strong suit at this point and I’ve traced it down to I feel like I can’t take a shorter swing with them. On the long clubs I feel like I have to take a longer swing, both in length of backswing and in standing distance from the ball. I filmed myself down the line today and even on the perfect shots I hit I noticed that my swing path seems to be coming around the ball slightly on an out to in path. Is this because I’m not tilted enough? When I try to tilt further I feel like I’m going to hit it fat and my instincts kick in and my back foot comes up and I hit it thin or top the ball. I feel like if I can master the tilt then my swing path will be from the inside and straight down the target line after contact, what are some tips/drills for mastering the tilt?

Hi Todd thanks for making this video I asked for this video, I’m a single handicap player and totally understand that it’s rare to want to move the ball but occasionally I’ll hit a miss shot and a slight shape would help, Like yourself I also only ever shape up to a maximum of around 10 yards but what was nice to see is you explaining how you set up for a shape shot and it made me smile as all that you said you do is exactly what I do so makes me feel better any time I might need to fade or draw depending on wind or a previous miss hit I now feel 💯 positive I’m correctly setting up for the shot I have in mind and positive vibes on the course has to be like having a 15th club in the bag, thanks again Todd 👍🏻. Benefit I see to hitting draw and fades for a noobie is to know how to hit it wrong and how to correct for straightness. My shot shape can either be a slight draw to fade. When I see trouble into green or dogleg I will attempt to bias my shot slightly so my miss won't hurt.

So, with the wind you have on the day you made this video, would you align for a straight shot right of the flagstick/green and allow the wind to bring the ball back to the green?

I’ve also had the same theory why would you shape a lot of shots some will say if your in bad spot it’s needed but my counter is if you don’t hit it into that spot then there would be no need If you hit consistently straight and distance control where you want it then there would be no need for shaping Same is relevant in other sports as well you don’t curve or hit a baseball you hit it to a target And same in pool yes you use spin for English but the ball is still hit dead straight to hit the other

I had a question about shaft impact angle versus club lie angle. Is it true that at impact (and address) that your shaft angle is the same as the lie angle of the club? Meaning if I have a 9 iron with a 60 degree lie angle that should be my angle the shaft makes with the club at address and impact (i.e. no lifting of the legs causing a change in angle)

I been using this alignment trainer and having difficult hitting my longer clubs on target. Where is IBP for hybrids 4h,3h?
@GravesGolf
@GravesGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Because hybrids are meant to be played the same as irons, the ball position for all your hybrids would be the same at the Iron Ball Position mark. Also ensure your back foot is in line with the 'H' on the board. Placing your foot at the hybrid marker puts the 'effective' ball position slightly farther up in your swing because of the wider stance width, while the 'actual' ball position remains at IBP for consistency. The only time you might adjust ball position for any club would be in certain course management situations requiring a specific shot trajectory. Be on the look out for a video coming soon on playing hybrids ands fairway woods. Thanks!

Club face is 75 to 85% responsible for the initial starting direction of the ball. Aiming club face directly at the target would start the ball basically at the target and then the path would cause the curvature. I know that you think your club face is aligned at the target for a fade at impact but it's not. It's a little left. Closed to the target but open to the path. Opposite for a draw. Club face open to target but closed in relation to path. A distinction with a difference. I would love to see your swing on Track Man, GC Quad or a Flightscope. Those numbers would be very interesting. I know you hate shaping shots but you may be inadvertently sending new golfers down a rabbit hole that has been disproved by science.

Excellent reasoning. I want to hit it straight every time. If you strike the ball correctly every time and have consistent distances shouldn’t you be able to get on the green with chance for birdie no matter the club? If true, Like you said, no reason to bend it.

I've been testing out the single plane swing concept for the last couple weeks, but my miss went from a slice to a hook. I tried various attempts at getting the club higher on plane when the only issue was too much tilt at address. I knew there had to be a simple explanation
@GravesGolf
@GravesGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you’re testing it out. General rule of thumb is with the side bend at address, your head should be over the inside part of your trail knee. Never outside of the trail knee. And you’re right about not tying to get the club higher on plane. That’s a common fault when people start with the Single Plane Swing is lifting the arms too much. It’s not about lifting the arms as it is getting your arms out in front of your body with enough distance away from the ball and the right amount of side bend (which varies in degree with the length of the club) to align the club and arms at address. That increase of distance away from the ball naturally puts the arms on a slightly higher plane. Also having the club head beneath the nose at address is a good checkpoint that your hands aren’t too far forward (since we start with the side bend at address and not straight up and down) These are the kind of simple but crucial tweaks our coaches make in our online coaching program. More info on that here members.singleplaneacademy.com/gold-start-here/

Mr Graves-your enthusiasm for what you belief in is commendable and has helped me -so thank you. Your case for not-shaping shots though is not true at all as the de facto situation proves you wrong. So maybe look at more firm evidence besides " I have spoken to--and they do not shape" etc. ---The ability to shape shots from side to side, control their trajectory and play ... of lies in all conditions are some of the hallmarks of an accomplished golfer. ...

I used to do that. You probably have too strong of a grip . Going to a really weak grip which you have to for Moe's swing takes a long time to get used to it if you are used to a strong grip Your thumb should be right in line worth the club face or maybe 1 oclock . Thats what worked for me
