Se do bheatha a bhean ba leanmhar!
B'e ar gcreach tu bheith i ngeibhinn,
Do dhuiche bhrea i seilbh meirleach
'S tu diolta leis na Ghallaibh.
Chorus:
Oro, se do bheatha 'bhaile!
Oro, se do bheatha 'bhaile!
Oro, se do bheatha 'bhaile!
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.
Ta Grainne Mhaol ag teacht thar saile,
Oglaigh armtha lei mar gharda;
Gaeil iad fein 's ni Gaill na Spainnigh,
'S cuirfid siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh.
Chorus
A bhui le Ri na bhfeart go bhfeiceam,
Muna mbeam beo 'na dhiaidh ach seachtain,
Grainne Mhaol agus mile gaiscioch
Ag fogairt fain ar Ghallaibh.
Chorus
English translation:
Oh-ro You're welcome home,
Oh-ro You're welcome home,
Oh-ro You're welcome home...
Now that summer's coming!
Welcome oh woman who was so afflicted,
It was our ruin that you were in bondage,
Our fine land in the possession of thieves...
And you sold to the foreigners!
Grainne Mhaol is coming over the sea,
Armed warriors along with her as her guard,
They are Irishmen, not foreigners nor Spanish...
And they will rout the foreigners!
May it please the God of Miracles that we may see,
Although we only live a week after it,
Grainne Mhaol and a thousand warriors...
Dispersing the foreigners!

It's not about any woman specifically but the goddess who is Ireland and her people depending on no one else and repelling invaders. Grace O'Malley/ Granialle Bhealle is simply a metaphor for the land itself

This is a great version of the song, it's out of the ordinary, she's keeping the song alive, because she's keeping it interesting. As Padraig Pearse said "A country without a language is a country without a soul", she's keeping the song, alive and interesting and by doing that she's protecting the language, and that's what Padraig Pearse wanted when he wrote it, to keep the language going, to keep the soul going! Long live sinead O Connor!!!

I am the great grandson of four Irish immigrants to Boston 120+ years ago. Three of them learned the mother tongue and two as their first language. My one great grandfather could not speak a word of English until he was in his twenties. He was in the process of teaching me when I was a toddler but then he died. I vaguely remember speaking to him in another language all those 60+ years ago but when he died there was no one else to speak it with so I lost it completely. I have no recollection of the words themselves, only the vague sense that I once spoke them. I was three when he passed. I have no one to teach me or to speak it with but I am slowly teaching myself one word at a time from on line tutorials and KZfaq videos and this song is what has inspired me to do so. I had not heard it sung in many years then I heard it hear and it sounded familiar. My great grandfather would spontaneously begin to sing this every time someone brought up his late wife, my great grandmother, who died before I was born. I'm pretty sure the version he sang was the pre Pearce one husbands sang to their wives when they moved them into their new homes as newly weds. He had left Ireland Years before Pearce wrote the new lyrics.

I love this version. Whatever you say about Sinead's lifestyle, choices, things she says, whatever - she really communicates through song. She is the real thing. I have to imagine that, if she'd been singing this at the time it was written, she would inspire thousands to join the cause. And p.s., I'm not even Irish, so I have no side in the conflict - I just love her singing.

Classic version of the song. I love hearing it accompanied by the video of 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'. It is great to know that an international pop singer like Sinead will sing live a song in Irish. We need more like her! It is also appropriate that a ballad about a rebel Irish woman is sung today by another Irish rebel woman. Beir bua!

This is an old pirate song about a female Irish pirate queen "Granuaille" which means "bald Grace",owing to the fact that she shaved her head as a child and ran away to sea to join her father. She was infamous as a pirate and was imprisoned by agents of Elizabeth the 1st.However the Queen became intrigued by Granuaile and the pair met.She was then released and this song is a celebration her crew, describing how her return would mean more prosperity and adventure for them. Hope you enjoy!x

I remember Sinead and how famous she was during my childhood with her shaved head, and voice which was distinctly different from that of the other singers during the early 90's, and how she dressed... So this morning I woke up and thought about listening to Sinead's biggest hit from that time when I was only 6/7 years old, "Nothing Compares"... and as looked through other songs and stuff I found this one... pretty cool reggae/celtic vibe going on... she's unique. Cheers!

I just want to correct this daft notion that the chorus means "Oro you're welcome home." It means nothing of the sort. In spite of what Google translate may tell you. This version of the song is a call to action. A call to arms, to insurrection and to take back the land stolen by foreigners. Let me explain why. The full line of the chorus is: Óró. Is sé do bheatha abhaile (If you are speaking English you could say it as: "o ro iss shay do va-ha awal-ya" but a little bit quickly. Irish is a very contextual language. It depends what you say and when you say it. If you read "aimsire lahreach" in a grammar book, it's probably saying "present tense". If you see exactly the same thing on TV is probably means "weather report". See how different they are. It's the same with this song. "Óró" is grabbing your attention. My granny would often call "Oro a Dáithí". It means everything from "come here" "pay attention" "heads-up" "mind what you are doing" "look here" and so on. So she was saying: "Pay attention David".... So pay attention you... or just "heads-up"... Óró a thú ... The next word in the written version is the verb/copula: "Is" and it's missing from the song. That's common enough in Irish, because "everyone" knows it should be there. So the phrase should be "Is sé do".... It is your... beatha, (do bheatha). There is no English word for this. The nearest would be "livelihood" or "sustenance", even "heritage" - and all of them together. In this case I think it's OK to say it means "birth right". Now: bhaile is really: abhaile... Meaning "back home".So the whole phrase gets pronounced: o ro iss shay do va-ha awal-ya. But it's too long to fit the metre of the song so we get.: o ro shay do va awal-ya. And all that is quite ok in Irish. SO, THE LINE REALLY MEANS: Pay attention It's your birth-right back home. The last line of the chorus is especially important: To read it as "now that summer is coming" would be to misunderstand it. In agricultural Ireland, the summer is useless - unless you've already prepared "in the coming of the summer" in March and April. Which is exactly what the line says: Anois (now)... ar theacht (in the coming of)... an tsamhraidh (the summer). The song goes on to say something like "I was in a bar in some foreign lad when this woman began bemoaning me... Don't you know what's going on back home.... Your birth right is being stolen and sold to foreigners. Because although this is an old song, a little over 100years ago Patrick Pearse re-wrote it to support the planned rising (April 1916). There's nothing about "welcome home" in these lyrics (except for a bit about being more welcome than a hundred cows who were milking (and so especially valuable at a time when a man was considered rich if he had two cows). So to repeat myself, this version of the song is a call to action. A call to arms, insurrection and to take back the land stolen by foreigners.

As a 9y old, and born in Belgium, we had a project running that was getting Irish victims over here on holidays. So, I met a certain Colene who was staying in Belgium, at a safe place and the family she stayed at was trying to give her a relaxed time. I had a really nice time with her, although i didn't know any English at that time, we connected. I remember one thing: she wet the bed at night, cause she was having nightmares cause she experienced the bombings going on in Belfast. that's what i was explained. yet i didn't mind and i wanted to sleep next to her, cause i was afraid of ghosts. I wish i could find this woman back again, and hope she's doing fine now.

This is a song about rebellion and the energy that Sinéad brings to this version encapsulates what her life was about. She led a rebellion against the abuse of children by the Catholic Church, campaigned for the rights of Travelers and expressed solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. She considered herself a protest singer and she used her platform to speak and sing about the disenfranchised and marginalised. She paid a heavy price for her bravery in speaking out and the barrage of abuse and criticism she faced undoubtedly had an effect on her mental health. She will be missed, she was loved by many. One can only hope she is at peace now and reunited with her beloved son Shane. Rest in peace, our warrior, Sinéad.

Uses her whole self when singing. I don't think many were ready for her uniquely expressed talents.

Aontaím 100% leat. Níl an amadáin seo ach biogóid atá ag labhairt seafóid, a cheapann go bhfuil fuil níos tábhachtaí don chultúr na an chultúr í féin. Leamh mé an chuid maidir leat ag muinniú do phaistí Gaeilge maith. Sin go h-iontach. Gaeilge Abú

A brave Irish woman singing about another ancient Irish Pirate queen the legendary Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley) the song bemoans the terrible state of Ireland and calls her.... Gráinne Mhaol is coming over the sea, Armed warriors as her guard, Only Gaels are they, not French nor Spanish... and they will rout the foreigners! May it please the King of Prodigy that we might see, Although we may live but one week after, Gráinne Mhaol and a thousand warriors... Dispersing the foreigners!
