Thank you! I knew there was a reason for the hennes/sitt/sin distinction and i knew there was a reason for it but unfortunately Duolingo is doesn’t give actual explanation. And I asked a Swedish friend but she didn’t know how to explain it in English. She gave me examples and I could see a pattern bug couldn’t verbalise it. This was a very good way of explaining the difference.

Thanks a lot! I've been learning Swedish for a few weeks now and although vocabulary is very easy to learn for me, the grammar isn't explained very well in the lessons. Hopefully I'll remember this explanation because it made so much sense "Sin is used with n-words" made me smile lol

What I find to be the issue in my own learning of Swedish is that Duolingo (yeah, I use that...) doesn't explain why things work the way they do. If you get something wrong on there, you don't know why. They just tell you what the right answer should be. The solution for me so far has been coming to KZfaq.

I was struggling with it until I realised that in my native language (Polish) we have it also (I'm learning Swedish from English so I automatically think in English while learning). For instance when somebody says "She likes her horse" "Hon tycker om sin häst" "Ona lubi swojego konia" We're like "okay, everything is clear here". But if somebody would have said "She likes her horse" "Hon tycker om hennes häst" "Ona lubi jej konia" We (Poles&Swedes) would be like "what? Whose horse does she like? What 'her'? Who is this mysterious other 'she'?" It just makes everything clear. E.g. there's a story: "This is Julia with her white horse. Right next to her stands Anna's black horse. She likes her horse." Does it mean she likes the white horse or the black one?

Does sin/sitt/sina also work for plural subjects? "We paint our (own) house" in Swedish is "Vi målar sitt hus" ?
@sayitinswedish

We only use it with the third person but yes: de målar sitt hus
@jakethesnake95

I know this is a bit off subject, but you used the word gillar in one of the examples, and I have been wondering… Are gillar and tycker om completely interchangeable? I’ve been wondering the same thing about god och bra. I heard someone say “god mat” and it made me wonder why it’s not “bra mat?”
@sayitinswedish
@sayitinswedish 2 жыл бұрын
Generally we say that "tycker om" is more affectionate when talking about people but other than that they are completely synonymous. "God" and "bra" is a bit more difficult to explain. And the explanation might not even help much. You can read more here: www.sayitinswedish.com/blog/language/the-difference-between-bra-and-god/

Or did I? You only use "sin"/"sitt"/"sina" in the third person and when it can refer back to the subject. That's it. Just try to shove in a "own" after the pronoun in English. Han älskar sin bil = He loves his (own) car Han älskar hans bil = He loves his car Can't explain it clearer than this.

You got nothing? You mean you didn't understand the explanation? Think about these two sentences: Han äter sin mat = He's eating his (own) food Han äter hans mat = He's eating his (someone else's) food Sin/sitt/sina always refers back to the subject.
