@YankeeBlues21
@YankeeBlues21 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the movie doesn’t really have a villain, but the kids, Val in particular (since he’s actively trying to change his parents), are the closest thing to antagonists, since they cause 90% of the drama just by lying to both sets of parents.

The villain is Ally McBeal’s dad, Gene Hackman, the homophobic jackass right wing politician. But even his character mellows over the course of the movie.

It’s really interesting to see that when it came out, the audience were on the side of the son, now we know better and even if he does come around at the end, we see that he’s asking something unreasonable of his father Edit to add: everyone’s performance in this movie is stellar.

Hank Azaria who plays Agador is the voice of Moe the bartender from the Simpson. The birdcage is 1 of my all time favourite films. It's just a laugh a minute. Especially at the end when all the conservative side at the wedding are looking over as if to say what on earth I this. Nathan Lane who plays Albert is exceptional in this.

Also keep in mind that at that time South Beach really became a Mecca for the LGBT Community in The South. Don't worry alot of folks thought Val was his "Lover" too. When Albert screamed about his "Little Chippy" that was a term of a Loose Girl back in the day. It was mentioned in Peyton Place.

I absolutely agree. Dead Poets Society is a serious Robin Williams masterful movie. It played in 1989 the summer I graduated high school, and I saw it first run in the theaters on opening weekend. Talk about a powerful message... sold out audience, and we were all jumping up and down cheering at the end in tears. DPS just bowled us over completely in the theater. No one in the audience knew what to expect, we just knew Robin Williams was in it and it was supposed to be good. Dead Poets Society brought the phrase "Carpe Diem" to the attention of Generation X. "Seize the Day". Which is why when the millennials started tossing YOLO around that's how we would respond.

I saw this, in theaters, with a couple of Gay guys, and a Lesbian. We all were cracking up. That shared experience was priceless. I learned much, about kindness in action, and communal support, and how blind I had been, to have marginalized people based on my prior indoctrination. I became, a "friend of the family", thanks, in part, to this film. The line "...not for a million bucks" is crucial, as it highlights where our values lie. "People" are more important than money. Invest in people. The world is what we make of it. If we disregard kindness, we should not be surprised at the outcome. Conversely, if we invest in kindness, and help it to grow, it can only be a benefit to this world. There was once a time, when "people of the two spirits", were revered as teachers, as their views of the world were seen to be more comprehensive, or lensed though a wider variety of gender perspectives. Side by side, a responsible Humanity moves forward.

There are so many Robin Williams movies you could check out. "Good Will Hunting" is outstanding. Also "The Fisher King" and "Dead Poets Society." A very early one that isn't as well known but I always liked is "Moscow On The Hudson," where he plays a Russian immigrant to the U.S. Nathan Lane (Albert) hasn't done many movies, but he's an enormous star on Broadway, having starred in comedies, dramas, and musicals there for more than 30 years.

This was my first date movie with my Rob, who I was with for almost 26 years. He died in a car accident about 4 months ago. So on our first date on March 8th 1996, he took me to Pizza Hut first for dinner and then we went and saw this movie The Birdcage! And when we were walking from the truck to the movie theater he took me by the hand and told me that he didn't want to lose me. And from that night on, we used March 8th as our Anniversary date. He came down and visited me, hung out with me, for a couple weeks in February of 1996, before we went out on our first date on March 8th. I miss him so much. We never got married but we were together for almost 26 years. I'm lost without him. I'm homeless now and everything just sucks!!

One of my absolute favorite movies, almost no reactors watch it so thank you so much for your reaction, your laughter was infectious! I highly recommend watching more Robin Williams movies, he was a rare performer who could be hysterically funny one minute and deeply-nuanced the next minute. Some of his best include his Oscar-nominated performances in Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King and his Oscar-winning performance in Good Will Hunting; other fun performances are as the voice of the Genie in Aladdin and Teddy Roosevelt in the Night at the Museum trilogy (Hank Azaria, who played Agador Spartacus, played the villain in the second movie). I also recommend watching more of Nathan Lane’s work, he’s a bit more well-known for his performances on Broadway but he’s done some great movies and tv shows like the voice of Timon in the original The Lion King, the movie musical version of The Producers (he also did the Broadway musical) and frequently guest-starred on the sitcom Modern Family, a hilarious and heart-warming show with great acting (if you loved The Birdcage, you’ll love Modern Family).

Shout out to both "Siri D" and "Sotto" who commented on your reaction to "The Mirror Has Two Faces," and suggested that you watch "The Birdcage." The film is based on a French movie called "La Cage aux Folles" (1978), based on the 1973 play, and was turned into a Broadway musical of the same name in 1983. Obviously, this is a non-musical adaptation of the story. I've always liked the film, but it's been ages since I've seen it, and I didn't realize how many stars are in it! This is an amazing cast! I am glad you enjoyed the movie! You are right, KSO: Kindness never goes out of fashion and I hope we can all find a little more kindness in our lives.😁

The opening was three different parts which were expertly edited together. The first part over the ocean was done from a helicopter. The street scene and outside of the club was done with a camera on a crane. The last part was a studio set of the interior of the club. The 3 parts are seamlessly merged.

Such a hilarious comedy!!! ... On the opposite end of Robin Williams movies is 1990's "Awakenings," a heartwarming medical drama based on the memoir of a real-life neurosurgeon, Dr. Oliver Sacks. Directed by actress-director Penny Marshall (Laverne from the "Laverne & Shirley" 1970s TV sitcom and who's also the younger sister of "Pretty Woman" director Garry Marshall), "Awakenings" also stars Robert De Niro, who was nominated for an Oscar for best actor, and Julie Kavner, the voice of Marge Simpson from the long-running "The Simpsons" cartoon series. It was also nominated for best picture and for best adapted screenplay. Williams, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the movie, plays a serious and sensitive physician in a straight, dramatic role (without all the bells and whistles and laughs of his regular comedies). I highly recommend 'Awakenings." ... WIlliams won an Oscar for best supporting actor for 1997's "Good Will Hunting," a drama starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Great movie. When Armand slips in the kitchen, Robin had actually fallen. The other actors started to react but Robin kept going so they went along with it and you can clearly see Robin nearly start laughing. I don’t think Val intended to be dismissive of Albert and seemingly ashamed of his parents but it was partly due to the fact he didn’t want them to face the wrath of his future father in law. It wasn’t until he heard Senator Keeley talk crap about what was deemed acceptable that he realised that although Albert was a man he was practically his mother having raised him with Armand.

Lyrics from the Broadway musical 'La Cage Aux Folles' - musical inspired by the same movie that inspired 'The Birdcage'. Also covered by Gloria Gaynor. "I am what I am I am my own special creation So come take a look Give me the hook or the ovation It's my world that I want to take a little pride in My world and it's not a place I have to hide in Life's not worth a damn Till you can say, "Hey world, I am what I am" I am what I am I don't want praise, I don't want pity I bang my own drum Some think it's noise, I think it's pretty And so what, if I love each feather and each spangle Why not try and see things from a different angle? Your life is a sham till you can shout out loud I am what I am I am what I am And what I am needs no excuses I deal my own deck Sometimes the ace Sometimes the deuces There's one life And there's no return and no deposit One life, so it's time to open up your closet Life's not worth a damn till you can say "Hey world, I am what I am""

Is this how people dress in the street? It is when the street is just a block or two from the edge of the beach. It's South Beach, in Florida. It's a recreational town. Pretty much everywhere in Florida, especially within 10 or 15 miles of the coast, wear bathing suits and skimpy attire. You're not going to go home and dress up to stop in for a drink, a meal, or to pick up some things on the way to or from the beach or a backyard cookout.

Love your reactions and commentary but especially your facial expressions 😆! Yes Albert, (Nathan Lane), character really out shines along with the butler.

While I totally agree that they shouldn't have to pretend and Val was really going about this the wrong way, it's like that old addage says, "Love makes you stupid." Plus, the whole eloping idea wouldn't work. Since she's not 18 and, therefore, still a minor, she can't legally get married without permission from her parents or guardians. Val was just so focused on being able to marry this girl that he wasn't thinking clearly. At least not until reality smacks him in the face.

I would like to add my vote for those who recommended you watch Robin Williams's classics "Good Morning Vietnam" "Good Will Hunting" "The Fisher King"and "Dead Poets Society". I would like to add a few more RW movies "Insomnia" with Al Pacino, a thriller; and "Nine Months" a comedy where his short appearance is hilarious and unforgettable.

For years my favourite foreign language film was La Cage Aux Folles (it was in French with English sub-titles) and when I heard that they were re-making it English (and calling it The Birdcage) I have to be honest and say that I feared the worst .. BUT, thanks to a brilliant cast and script, it turned out to be just as good as the original film .. and the stage musical, La Cage Aux Folles, isn't bad either (''I am what I am'' .. ''The best of times is now'')

Just as the original French play and film changed perceptions in France back in the 70s, this big remake for US audiences in the 90s changed perceptions here too. Movies like these are important. We can look back and say, "Aw, how quaint," but it was bolder back in the day. Consider films like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" That was the late 60s. People today sneer at it, but I'm not sure many films have been as bold since then. Same here. And the scene with Nathan Lane buttering toast "like a man" is one of the funniest things ever done, so there that. :)

Did you ever watch Rupaul's Drag Race (US or UK), or even Paris Is Burning Or Pose. You'd enjoy them too. The Dancer Celsius is real life Dancer Luca Tommasini who worked with Madonna and a Choreographer too.
