I heard someone say Danzig isn't really singing so much as he's shouting in key. That really helped me to understand and half ass it myself

That’s a good start for the more powerful sections, but he does also add quite a bit of nuance with pulling back and even using falsetto to color lines… it’s the subtle little things that add the “professional dynamics”

A really good example of him doing his falsetto voice is the song “Ashes” by him

Could you maybe do one of these for Dax Riggs? He’s my favorite vocalist but I can’t find anything on his voice. You do an excellent analysis and I would love to see something on him for a change. Thank you.

Also when I was in high school I did a pretty good Danzig impression as I tried to make my voice sound like his. However, I didn't know what I was doing. I pretty much just sang in my throat because I had 0 vocal training. I didn't know anything about how to use different muscles instead of just my damn gullet.

Killer job of breaking down how Danzig sings! I had forgotten how good of a vocalist Danzig is, but you reminded me. i like how you showed that Dark Tone needs (open throat, wide back of mouth, high soft palate). That's very helpful. As for glottal fry, I asked you about hot to get the Christina Aguilera "dirrty" sound in the comments section to your Tom Keifer video and I have two quick questions about that technique: Is that sound mainly brought about by voluntarily contracting specific muscles in the throat or is it mainly brought about by directing the airflow so that the air itself causes this sound to come about without having to think about engaging any particular muscles? Also, do you have to do anything specific with your tongue to create the glottal fry or "dirrty" sound?

You always ask such great questions and I really appreciate them because it gets me thinking, and I always try to convey that - but in this case, I don't really think about what specifically I'm doing, other than trying to mimic that 'marge simpson' sound... But you've made me think on this more, and I've come up with a better explanation - I'll do a separate video on that specifically so I'd recommend subscribing so you don't miss it!

@@RockYourBestVocals Jim, it's been a few weeks so I was wondering have you started making that video with the "better explanation" of how to get the dirrty sound or the Danzig sound glottal fry sound where it's kind of like a growling sound?

Have you done one on Dave grohl or someone similar to him??I’ve been listening to a lot of foo fighters and my cover band wants to gig a few of there songs but I can’t figure out how he gets that rasp.

BTW, you have two of this video up at the same time and while this is the one that's getting the most views, the other one maybe drawing away some people from this one and lowering the total views this one gets.

I was really into the Doors when I 1st got into Danzig when I was in high school - 1992 or 93. Obviously his voice is very comparable to Jim Morrison's. If you look at the band photos in the CD sleeve for Danzig II Lucifuge, whoever did the photography for that album really wanted to drive home the Doors connection. It's a complete ripoff of the photos in the Doors 1st album.

OMG yeah! 😮 Forgot about that Lucifuge album cover! It’s almost EXACTLY like the Doors 1967 album cover! Wow thanks for pointing that out! 😂

@RockYourBestVocals Ha! Yeah, I remember when I 1st got Lucifuge, the most fun Danzig album of the classic 4, amd I was looking at the cover and I was trying to figure out why it looked so familiar. Danzig 4 is actually my favorite Danzig album. I remember driving up to Sound Warehouse every date they had on the board for the release of that album, and every time it got pushed back. It felt like it took forever to finally release. But man, what a great album. It actually took me a while to get into the original Misfits. I wanted them to sound like Danzig, but instead the songs were shorter, faster and the lyrics were a little goofy at times. After I finally got it, though, I think in my old age I'm a bigger fan of the Misfits, but I still have a lot of love for Danzig.

Can't figure Danzig... On the one hand, he always clung to that laughable satanic/pagan metal thing that I can't take seriously at all, on the other hand, he's always included an incredibly diverse range of styles and influences on his albums. I wanna respect him but you gotta drop the absurd "disciple of the dark lord" crap, lol. Good stuff in the tutorial! 👍👍👍

Did you take Black Sabbath seriously? How about Alice Cooper? These musicians, just like Glen Danzig, were artists and they were entertainers as well. They put on performances! They did everything they could to give the audience the most bang for their buck. Danzig did the gothic, pagan thing because it was fun. It added some mystique. It did something to set him apart from some random person in the crowd...or from other artists. It created a distinct image. You want rock bands to just play music and have no stage show, no distinct image, no mystique, no big personalities? Just go to the grunge bands. They cared about getting high and playing music - in that order. Some of them were talented musicians but they looked like random members of the audience. They didn't bother to have any type of stage show or even wear something that would show they actually cared about how they presented themselves. They'd go onstage in a t-shirt and shorts and dirty hair. They put in the least amount of effort possible to entertain or even look presentable. Now that's absurd.

@@russellspear6188 To the extent they did silly "All hail our dark lord" stuff, I did not take Sabbath seriously, no. As for Alice Cooper, uhm, did ANYBODY take him seriously?

@@russellspear6188 I wouldn't ask Stephen King to show up at my house dressed as a ghost while I read one of his books. Presumably, if I've gone to a concert, I like their music. If they just wanna play their songs, that's fine. You're always (I assume) with friends when you go to a concert. Good friends, good music, good time. What more do you need? (Although, if I went to an Alice Cooper concert, I would want him to put on a show to distract me from his music... Same goes for KISS. They owe us a show for listening to that trash, lol.)
