Perfect!!! You absolutely must keep checking these guys out. They are probably the fastest growing metal act today. I myself had been out of metal for several years before I heard these guys in February. They have a deep rabbit hole, with around 30 assorted official and live videos, and a very dedicated fan base. It has been 25 years since I have listened to a band that I like as much. I have seen people of all walks of life and age groups blowing Jinjer up, one of them being a 62 year old aunt. Her name is Tatiana and she finds a completely new and different way to floor you with literally every song. I personally think she is the best voice I have ever heard. If growling hurts, you are damaging your vocal folds. This sound is produced entirely with the false folds above the real folds. It's completely healthy as Tatiana is showing. Don't try to growl until you have been taught. Tatiana's voice here has been doubled, but you can hear that.

Haha, yep, Pisces is usually the Jinjer cherry popper. She does not use her vocal cords for those sounds, but her vestibular folds, aka false cords. Kardavox Academy has a video on Pisces and goes through the technique with some live examples, but generally speaking, if it hurts, then you're doing it wrong. That's very interesting. I will have to check that out. I'm especially interested how one make sounds that intimate from their throat without using vocal cords, considering that is the very thing that produces sound in your throat? Without the vocal cords you would not be able to make any sounds at all except breathing and hissing. I've I seen interviews with Tati where she explains how she uses her vocal cords after years of development and practice, so they are not shredded when she goes gutteral. Any links you could provide that backs up your theory would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I have to believe you are mistaken.

@@jamesb0255 She doesn't say anything about using her vocal cords, in fact she says that she does not know how she does it, since she isn't formally trained. You could've just used a search engine here, I gave you plenty of terms to look for, and there are plenty of vocal coaches who did reactions to this and other songs that use those techniques, all explaining how you don't use your vocal cords for this, since that would be unhealthy. That being said, I don't care what your beliefs are. Either educate yourself, or keep on believing whatever you want, be it wrong or not, it seems to make you feel better about yourself.

Love to see your reactions Lisa but this was just hilarious! I "found" Jinjer around 2 years ago and I am a little bit addicted. Saw them live a year ago and it was crazy awesome, one of the best concerts I've ever visited and there are a lot in the last 40 years! Some facts about Tati, them and this video: This is the studio recording of this song, Napalm Records wanted a Video to this song but the band hasnt the time to produve it through touring, so Napalm cut parts from different concerts together, a thing which is pretty easy with there stuff because they are so tight that it is sometimes possible to put studio material over live footage and vice versa and they are on point. Tatiana had never vocal lessons, only some when she was around 8 years old and she got bored by this. She is able to switch between clear and extreme voice from one line to the next and back and can reach even a much deeper extreme voice than in this video. Tati said when she has problems with her voice it is easier for her to use the extreme voice than sing higher notes in her clear voice. There are all 4 fantastic musicians, a fact that often missed because of Tatis voice. In before corona times they made 150-200 live gigs per anno. Live they are unbelievable, there energy on stage is beyond compare. If you want to see more there are two primary suggestions: "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019 (---> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mN6ZZsxq3OC1cp8.html ) and most recent a one take recording of "Judgement (and Punishment)" (-----> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5uimsJnmLnMoZs.html ). The one take of "Judgement (and Punishment)" is perfect for reactors to see what shes really doing and how effortless and seamless she is able to switch. Best regards from Germany to the whole team!

Fun reaction. :) The intuition that using the vocal cords for those sounds would hurt is totally correct. However, the technique doesn't use the vocal cords, but rather the vestibular folds (aka "false vocal cords", hence the term "false cord growls"). Tatiana says she feels like she has "two throats," one for clean singing and the other for growling, so there is no damage to her vocal cords when she's doing that. Though this is a collection of live video, it is a studio recording and has been edited with different layers of vocals. As to the sound not being human, the woman who inspired Tatiana to learn that technique (Otep Shamaya, of the band Otep - I'd recommend "Ghost Flowers" off the Confrontation live DVD as a starting point if you are curious) also does voice-over work for monster characters in movies and games. There is a "live in Melbourne" version of this song if you want to see what she sounds like in concert with minimal editing that just cleans up the live audio. For me personally, even if live audio quality isn't quite as good as studio (and for Napalm Records' work, it usually comes darn close but Melbourne wasn't their recording) seeing her actually performing is incredible. I've been lucky enough to see them live twice and they are epic on stage, while Tatiana's stage presence is mesmerizing. The Judgement & Punishment one take vocal performance video is epic, and the live in Melbourne video for that song is good too. Perennial live at Wacken is incredible as well. I'd highly recommend checking out Ad Infinitum's song Marching On Versailles - growling vocals aren't just for white girls. ;) For that matter, though they are no longer active, Straight Line Stitch's Black Veil is another good one at least to check out if not react to. Cheers!

She's actually using a fry scream, not false chord. False chord actually does lead to some vocal damage, but you can get a wider array of lows and better pronunciation. But she uses fry which is actually a much harder technique to master. This actually has her just flexing her abs, pushing her diaphragm up and forcing air upwards. Then she pinches the airway shut, leaving just a bit open, like putting a thumb over a hose. Then that scattershot air blasts up into the nasal cavity, and resonates up there, meaning there is truly no interaction with or damage to the vocal chords, which you can't quite say for false chord screaming.
@masonblack3461
@masonblack3461 3 жыл бұрын
@@douglasmurdoch7247 you'd be wrong on all of that. Tatiana definitely applies the false cord growl, there's a difference. You got that much right at least. There's literally tons of videos of her talking about it. There are also quite a lot of vocal technique videos which detail how to do the false cord which leaves no interaction or damage to the true vocal cords. You've actually got it a bit backwards there, vocal fry has a risk of damaging vocal cords over time. Not trying to shit all over you, just pointing out something that isn't correct. Check out acts like Bring Me The Horizon, August Burns Red, or pretty much any metalcore band. Those guys use heavy fry. Vocalists like Tatiana, Otep, and even the venerable Floor Jansen display a very clear false cord technique. Further proof is in the way she modulates the sound, which can't be done all that well with fry. The further forward the tongue, the deeper the tone.
@douglasmurdoch7247
@douglasmurdoch7247 3 жыл бұрын
@@masonblack3461 It's the further back the tongue, the deeper the tone, not the further forward. And that tone modulation literally applies even more to fry than false chord. With false chord, since air is passing freely, you can get a deep gutteral low with a flat tongue and an open mouth shape. For false chord screaming you don't need weird tongue positions to reach the low tone, which is why false chord screamers have such clear pronunciation. You're right that false chord doesn't damage the true vocal chords. But it does damage the false vocal chords, which are very important for singing. If you're a pure screamer, then "false chord doesn't damage your voice", because it doesn't damage your speaking voice. But don't expect to retain your falsetto or your mixed voice if you decide to become a false chord screamer. Whereas fry screamers like Spencer Sotelo, Courtney LaPlante, and... Tatiana retain their clarity from taking advantage of nasal cavity resonance to achieve the sound, rather than raw shouting a la Corey Taylor. Her highs are so clearly fry and not the raw shouty power of false chord. Think of, "I came back home, so I want my home back", at the end of Home Back. You can't try to tell me that's false chord. Also the low part of that ending too is a deathcore-esque low fry. Actually, "Home Back" turned out to be a perfect example, because she does a "Blegh" leading into the outro. That is a fry sound. Sam Carter, another fry screamer popularized the sound. If you yourself are a screamer, try doing the Sam Carter "blegh" in false chord... Also, "A home where memories live". She does the blegh sound for live, once again, a fry sound.

@@douglasmurdoch7247 oh well I guess you know more than literally every other vocal coach and vocalist, as well as people sitting there making noises with their tongue so they discover for themselves that the further front the tongue, the deeper the tone. Tatiana's voice for sure catches the attention, but it's the mastery shown by all 4 of them together that holds attention for me. The precision & technicality from all of them is tremendous. I was properly shocked to see they really can do this live. This is metal at its best: epic multi-movement structure, with huge range of sonic textures, superb use of brain-engaging proggy angular timings (yet somehow without losing groove, which I'm assuming is straight-up witchcraft LOL), and great metaphorical lyrics encouraging us all to be the individuals we should be, instead of giving in to whatever "everyone" on social media says we should think / act like. The fact that their lyrics are so good is especially mind-blowing when you consider these guys are from the war-torn Donbass in eastern Ukraine, so English is a 2nd or 3rd language for them! The package is so complete that I've gone from someone who couldn't listen to bands with growls/screams, to Jinjer now being my favourite current band. Amazing stuff. #TeamJinjerFTW :)

First close encounter of the 3rd kind with Jinjer, huh? ; ) However, I must say that you immediately picked up on the dissonant chords and the "chaotic" rhythm pattern, which is something hardly any reactors do. Great reaction. : )

This is a studio recording so there are multi-track vocal layering for mid, highs, and lows. Don't let that fool ya, she's the real deal. Check out Perennial live @ wacken. For these vocals you use your false chords. Its separate from the vocal chords. We call it "vocal fry" bc it has a frying(cooking) sound. When activated it doesn't damage your vocal chords. It doesn't hurt. If it hurts, it is an indication of doing it incorrectly. Tati is self-taught. Recently there are vocal coaches specialized in teaching this but in the early days we had to figure it out on our own at our own expense of injury.

Amazing & a unique voice. Now I appreciate it but @ 1st I believed something had been done to the microphone that helped her make her voice with the effect. Now I believe that someone would have caught it & explained something or anything that was done to the microphone. But nobody has come out with any info to prove her voice was a fake. SO ENJOY HER VOICE & HER UNIQUENESS!! LOVINGLY SIGNED, A PROUD 🇺🇸 fan

Eugene (the bassist and band manager) has said in interviews that for live performances (which this is not, the video is from several live shows, the audio is studio recorded) all they use for her is a compressor and for some sections a delay doubler on a very short delay to give it that multiple voices feel. During some songs, like Perennial, they have a vocal intro that they sometimes play (as can be seen on the Wacken video). Live, 99% of it is just her switching and roaring like a champ with very minimal technical support.

Jinjer is one of those artists that most people doing reactions for them use the live videos because they are legitimately as good ( most of the time even better ) than the studio recordings. I wasn’t really into anything this hard before I heard them. They are technically masterful musicians and Tatiana is one of a kind. Check out the Live version of Pisces for something a bit more mellow, Judgement and Punishment live one take to see Tatiana crush some Reggae vibes in one take, and Who is Going to be the One Live in Wacken for some of the best musicianship around. In who is going to be the one, you can hear how powerful her voice is because you can hear it echo off the tree line at the venue 😂😂😂

It's clear you don't listen to much heavy music. I've been to a ton of shows and when I saw Jinjer live they were very good but nothing that stood out over many other very good bands I've seen. It's really funny that people who don't know the genre flip out for no other reason than them having a female lead. There are many other metal bands with female leads, as well as some full female metal bands. "you can hear how powerful her voice is because you can hear it echo off the tree line at the venue" That would be called speakers. It's as loud as the sound tech turns up the volume.

I’d also second Chris Odell’s suggestion of next Jinjer vid, ‘Perennial’ live at Wacken (she’s in a gold coloured jumpsuit) as it really showcases Tatiana’s breath control, as well as how she just effortlessly and seamlessly switches from clean vocals to full on ‘fry scream’ vocals. Love your reaction, and look forward to more. Subbed.

In the studio there is some compression and harmonzing/layering with vocals, but mostly what you hear is what you get. It's really her, and it's a lot to digest all at once. Also, you're giggle is delightful, keep sharing it with the world.

Just subbed I'm a 53 year old black male metal head this band is special next level stuff. This band brought me back to metal after a hiatus exploring other music. This rabbit hole it's epic. Not a bad song yet but you're about to find that out 🤣. In my opinion the next huge metal act is jinjer. Peace ✌️ from Stan the Alaskan.
