that was a technological marvel of the day, the talking motion pictures.

Yes, it's been nearly a century since The Jazz Singer made history and convinced virtually everyone to hop on the bandwagon for talking pictures.

People's reaction after watching the talking picture demonstration- "just a toy" "it's a scream" "it's vulgar" "it will never amount to a thing" People's reaction after watching The Jazz singer- "this movie is amazing" "whatever i said about talking pictures before, I take it back" "ok, I change my mind talkies will amount to a thing" "Warner bros pictures just prove me and everyone who doubted about talkies wrong"

Voice recorded and played on wax records didn't last long though. Soon after that, they actually found the way to record the sound directly on the film, nearby the images, through electrical form on the sound track. And this is actually how we use it even now, though in digital form. Cinema history is fascinating, isn't it?

The woman that says it’s vulgar looks she dressed up as that Marvel villain
@Austar720 күн бұрын
I've always thought she looked like Morticia Addams, especially since who I'm guessing is her husband earlier in the film looked like Gomez.

I get why the shot the "talking picture guy" the way they did but why close up on his teeth?

I'm legit curious why anybody didn't think this would sell or at least develop.This is clear advancement of technology. How could it be "vulgar"?
@michaelvega66464 жыл бұрын
people didn't think talkies wouldn't sell good at first, because back than they were used to watching silent movies. But due to the success of jazz singer at the time, it changed their minds and they started liking talking pictures

Her saying it was vulgar I think was mostly a reaction to her having a career change. When people's norms are challenged, the ones who were benefiting from the old format are threatened.

Because people are morons who have no idea how innovation works. Never changes. For instance, a year or two ago I was telling someone how self driving cars are going to be a huge thing anytime now and he was like "I thought they gave up on those after one of them crashed" and I was like "Did people give up on airplanes after the first one of those crashed?

They probably thought it was a gimmick, a potential fad at best. It's like how 3D movies stopped being such a big deal just a couple years after Avatar, or how Smell-O-Vision became the joke of the film industry after just three releases.

When this scene from my favourite musical, I believe this musical film takes place the year 1927 (see the theatre at the beginning of the film), the year when talking pictures were invented. Who agrees?

The Jazz Singer (which was mentioned in the film) was released in 1927 so you're right on the money there 👍

Seems like some of the serious commenters here don't get this is from a hilarious movie-making satire. Terribly unattractive close-up, and his startled reaction when cued to keep smiling is left in, all examples of how NOT to make a good movie.

If you have haven't seen it before, look up William Hays' Vitaphone presentation that went ahead of Don Juan. I saw it last night and immediately thought of this. I'm pretty sure that's the specfic inspiration.

Compare the response to the demonstration at 1:08 to those for stereophonic sound, color film, 3-D, widescreen format, 70mm, European-like films that are anti-establishment, Dolby Stereo, Star Wars, CGI, IMAX, and the coup de grace, digital cinema. They laughed at those ideas, but how wrong were they? They were wrong... TIMES INFINITY. But digital cinema? Despite the savings digital cinematography ends up with film or television proudction, digital cinematography will never, I repeat, NEVER, replace 16mm, 35mm, and even 70mm film for Hollywood, no matter what. I agree with the legendary filmmakers, Steven Spielberg, Darren Aronofsky, J.J. Abrams, Sofia Coppola, Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan on this: Film looks more beautiful than digital, and it should be used more often for Hollywood or independent films. Speaking of Tarantino and 70mm, his new film, "The Hateful Eight," was shot in Ultra Panavision 70, AND is being shown in 70mm. I would recommend seeing it in 70mm.

Tripp1993 uhhhhh, you just made the same mistake. Just as nobody is recording songs on 78 rpm discs in 2017 Nobody will be shooting film 50 years from now.
