On this video, I explain in general terms, the difference between a single fin longboard and the 2 plus 1 longboard in the context of how they perform. There are other important factors in board design that contribute to board performance.
This video is intended to be helpful for those longboarders who are advanced beginners to intermediate.
When buying a longboard make sure you get experienced advice so you can be matched with a board that will perform well for you and maximizes your fun in the water. Most important thing is to have fun!

I usually ride my wider, flatter 10'4" with a big single. I usually ride my narrower speed shape 10'4" with a 1+2. I prefer my 9' progressive longboard with a thruster cluster. It is good to experiment, get used to side slipping with a smaller than usual fin so that you develop the sensitivity to recover from the occasional suckout or backwash. Wide bases increase drive, deep flexy tips bend into the wave for a different kind of hold. If you can't afford a quiver of surfboards, increase the range of what you have with a quiver of fins.

Good video 👌🏻 What can you tell about the shape of the side of the sidebites? Because the outside of the fins of my thruster setup are a little convex. I jist bought some sidebites and they are flat on both sides. Does this matter?
@longboardarian6790
@longboardarian6790 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, typically thruster fins and side bites will have a flat surface on the inside and a slight convex on the outside. I do not know the hydrodynamic aspects and explanation on the difference that you are talking about. I have surfed fins that are slightly convex on both sides on my quads and they have felt excellent.

How would you say the bottom contours differ between a 2+1 and single fin. Does the nose rider have more concave up front than the 2+1, and how would the tail contours compare. Thanks, great video to explain the differences!
@longboardarian6790
@longboardarian6790 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. The contours of the Arenal are more in the the line of traditional design. Rolled bottom/belly, but subtle. While the 2+1 board has a modern design type of bottom, no roll, concave to flat to vee in the tail. The Arenal had a subtle concave, the 2+1 had a deeper concave.

I know this is old, But Im trying to decide where to position the center fin in a 2+1. I would assume the further forward the fin is the twitchier/quicker to turn the board is. Further back and its more stable, tracks a line and a bit harder to turn quickly?
@longboardarian6790
@longboardarian6790 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you have a decent understanding on the subject. I ll put it this way. More forward the cf you get a looser feel but less drive, the more back you put the fin you get more drive off turns but you lose looseness. Personally, depending on fin, I’ll put cf at mid point back an inch or so.

If it’s a single fin definitely the 9 inch. I’m 5’6” and 160 lbs. I’m really enjoying a 10” fin for my surfing. Used it in 9’0” boards to 10’ and it works great! Longer and more stable noseriding.
