Moe Norman said that he never moved the ball in his stance yet the ball clearly moved forward relative to his body. The answer lies in how you position your feet. This video discusses an important aspect of ball striking - the position of the ball in your stance.

What you show is why it doesn't work which I think was the reason why so many golfers tried it but didn't have all the minute bits of information to make it work. Your vids contain all that was missing because people didn't have the WHYS. Now with all the work you have put into your vids the puzzle is complete. Anyone can teach themselves to perform the one plane swing just as Moe did all his life. Without your information it would have been a lost art of the motion. Your vids are pure MOE GOLD Todd, thanks for sharing and as I've said before , anyone can do this with a little elbow grease and want too!! The missing link for me was setting my trail leg at an angle I call 45 degrees which who really knows it's a feeling, and have about 60% of my weight on the lead bent knee leg and a tilt away from the target with my spine. My trail leg when set this way is an automatic stabilizer as I take the club away inside and up. In this vid you show that the ball position doesn't really change except with the drive. The key for me as you so eloquently show is the position of the lead shoulder to the club you are using. When this is done correctly it is as Moe said, The Feeling Of Greatest! Now back to your vids!!!!

AMAZING DISCOVERY! Thank you for your videos. Based on your instructions, I performed an experiment. I set my ADAMS Idea graphite iron heads flat on the table (according to each loft & club lean forward), & measured the distance from the leading edge of the iron to the middle of the grip: 4I = 4 inches; 5 iron = 5 inches; 6 iron = 6 inches; 7 I = 7 inches; 9 I = 9 inches, & PW = 10 inches. THIS CANNOT BE A COINCIDENCE! This must be an integral part of designing and labeling golf sets!

I like your instructional vids. 55yrs or playing this game with the conventional swing has, over the last 20, slowly increased my golf handicap: but I m patiently playing on. I tried the single plane swing about 8yrs ago using Moe s vids, but gave it away. (not enoughh good info) Over the last 4 weeks I ve been studying your vids and practicing your approaches. BINGO yesterday it came to fruition: played the best I have in 6months. Still practicing using your method, Thanks. I m sure I will get better. Only thing is i might only have a good 6/7 years left. I ll b 80. So I m not going back to my old swing but using your methodology.

The reason is that too many teachers are just good golfers - and not educated on how a golf swing / the body / works. Not to be critical but it's a fact that golf professionals don't really understand the simple elements of biomechanics. Thanks for watching.

I would suggest, however, that you should avoid hitting full swing 60 degree wedges unless you absolutely have to. This instruction on the position of the left shoulder at setup has finally given me the ability to setup to the ball in the correct position. I have been struggling with consistency (especially with my irons) for years never improving. I played 9 holes today and payed particular attention to where my left shoulder was at address depending on the club I was using. I must say, this simple understanding has lifted my game to a new level. I shot 38 (par being 35). My only hurdle to breaking par is knowing my yardages better with this new found consistency in my ball striking. Thank you Todd Graves, you’re the only instructor that has made a difference in my game, and believe me, I’ve exhausted the lot of them!

Todd, your instructions are great. I use a single length irons and single length fairway metals and a 44 inch driver. All of the clubs were made just for me and they've simplified the single axis swing. I play all my fairway metals with a ball position exactly in the middle of my stance and a ball position 1/2 back of center for my irons. I have the 15 degrees of spine tilt for both. The swing has to be dug out of the ground and the one thing in Mr. Norman's swing that cant be taught, especially to middle aged men, is the left knee bend thru impact. It's like trying to tell a golfer over 40 to stretch for 30 minutes for five days a week. All I'm thinking is just to move my hips level which gives me a long flat spot thru impact. Thank you, David 🐈

@normankleinberg5525

@Richard Smith: Yea, except that's not what's in this video (AFAIC). This is precisely the question I wanted answered (ball position/club head position) and THOUGHT, at the beginning of the video, that the ball would stay about 5" off the lead foot and you'd just adjust stance width to move the point of the lead shoulder relative to the ball. But then Todd talks about moving the ball farther forward the longer is the club, and the determination of where the point of the shoulder should be relative to the ball seems to get lost. At least that's how I feel. Don't get me wrong: I like the tightly structured swing that Todd teaches and I appreciate him making the videos, but I'm still not sure how to adjust both these variables: ball position relative to the lead foot and shoulder relative to the ball (except that the shorter the club the more shaft lean you need, hence the narrower the stance should be).
@TheNYgolfer
@TheNYgolfer 4 жыл бұрын
@@normankleinberg5525 - He was a bit ambiguous in his description regarding the 5 inches inside the left heel ball position. At first he made it sound like the ball is always 5 inches inside the left heel, but near the end of the video he states "the ball is always 5 inches inside the left heel and forward, depending on length of club". So in other words, the furthest the ball goes back is 5 inches and the ball position moves more forward as the clubs get longer , and the stance width increases as the clubs get longer. Ball position should never be determined relative to the lead foot, because stance width changes depending on length of club and not all golfers use the same stance width for any given club . Ball position should always be determined relative to the lead shoulder, because the lead shoulder is where the low point of a good dynamic golf swing occurs. If you don't have a good, dynamic golf swing then ball position is a mute point because you don't have a consistent low point. What good is a proper ball position if your low point is all over the place. For those who have a consistent low point in their swing, you position your lead shoulder ahead of the ball if you want a descending angle of attack (short and mid Irons ). How far forward your shoulder goes depends on how steeply you want to hit down on the ball. As the clubs get longer less forward shaft lean is required , hence less angle of attack is needed, to meet the ball with the sweetspot of the clubhead ( as described in the video @ 1:45) so the lead shoulder is less in front of the ball for a 5 iron than a wedge. If you want a shallow , sweeping path into the ball (long irons , fairway woods etc ) you would place the ball just slightly aft of the lead shoulder or even with the lead shoulder. For the driver Trackman number show that optimal spin rates and launch angles occur if you have a slight upward angle of attack at impact so the lead shoulder should be placed slightly behind the ball so that contact occurs after low point as the clubhead starts ascending. As far as stance width goes, use what feels comfortable. Your low point will be at the lead shoulder, regardless of stance width. Obviously as the clubs get longer you need a wider stance for balance purposes.

@@TheNYgolfer Well, it goes without saying: Thanks for taking the time to post such a comprehensive explanation. I got a little better idea of all this once I downloaded Todd's book and read the part on ball position. My sense is that your advice is a bit at variance from his, regarding determining ball position relative to lead foot versus shoulder and using a narrower stance for shorter irons, wider stance for longer irons, which positions the lead shoulder appropriately. I will go back over both Todd's explanation and yours and see what I can glean from them. But my biggest issue relative to ball position remains; a consistent low point, exactly 2 inches behind wherever the ball is positioned. :)

The angle of attack is also shallowed out meaning that "fat" hits are almost impossible. In this video, look at the point of ground contact by the club head relative to the ball and the bottom of the swing arc. You get to "sweep" the ball and ensure great contact and proper launch angle because the bottom of the swing arc is long and just at the ball position, depending on the club.

Will the board compensate for height or do I just do that in the mirror as I establish and estimate spacing? I also notice that the front foot distance for ball placement for me with wedge is 4 inches to get center strike .i assume this is specific for me for me based on my height arm length etc Also. When on the driving range I’m starting to look at close together foot stances etc and think it’s them not me who are weird. Funny feeling that way. Condition the method.

Why rest the club a few inches behind the ball at address, alignment purpose to create a line between club face, ball and spot in front of the ball?

Todd, loving all your videos. Should we be inching up the 3 wood to say three inches from inside front step or staying at 5 inches?

Very damn simple answer to that: Go to a range, try both options and the one that gives you the better result (long and straight shot) THAT'S exactly what you do.

Is the body tilt the same for each club? Seems when you hit the wedge there was very little compared to the driver?

What are you looking at when you swing? I’ve always been told to keep your eye on the ball. With Moe’s setup are you looking at the club face or the ball that is approximately a foot in front of you. I don’t knownif this is stated correctly, but wouldnlike your advise.

You place club behind ball, then waggle - placing the club a few inches to a foot behind the ball. Once the club is placed behind the all, you set (still) look at the ball and swing THROUGH it.

great video. would you use the width of your stance for different wedge shots too? for example a wider stance for a flop shot to deliver more loft?
