Sinking of the USCGC Tamaroa

On May 10, 2017, The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa was sunk approximately 26 miles off shore from Cape May, NJ to help develop an artificial reef.
This video captures the final moments of the Tamaroa before she plunges to the depths below.
Filmed with a DJI Inspire 2 unmanned aircraft system.

I spent many 4 to 8s on helm and look out and loved the helm underway. You always new that she was the ship that was going to keep you safe in 40 footers. She was my first and only ship in the Coast Guard. I miss the crew and Im gonna miss you, thanks TAM.

My Dad was part of the commissioning crew of a sister ship USS KIOWA ATF 72 in 1943. It was his home for 2 yrs. So sad to see this sister go down but at least she's accessible and doing good work still.

I also served on her. She was a great ship to helm and as another guy said, you felt safe in heavy seas.

The Cutter Venturous was christened in 1969. I served on her almost 50 years ago, and she is still in service, today, 50 YEARS LATER. How about the Queen of the Fleet? What ship is it, these days? I am sure there are children and grandchildren serving on this fine boat, holding the same ratings, standing the same watches, sitting in the same mess deck tables and chairs, and even sleeping in the same racks as their ancestors. Sorry for the off-topic. Did anybody watch the movie, THE USUAL SUPECTS? The boat in the movie, was non-the-less, this cutter, the Tamaroa. (What finest vessel for Hollywood to find for their movie, so they could urinate on it! RIP, Tammy. You served your country well!)

Its called an Artificial Reef, it is sunk on purpose to give fishies a place to live and corals to grow

Very interesting! What drone/camera combination was that? I was thinking you were a bit low when the bow submerged and then a red (Autel?) drone appears that is really close to the water!! Not sure what that managed to capture being that close...

That was an Inspire 2 with a stock 15mm lens. That other drone was a Splash Drone I believe - it actually crashed into the tug boat that day.

looks like the stern bottomed out, so must be pretty shallow.

Does the ship still have her propellers and rudders attached or were those removed before the sinking?

this ship is special. Served in WW2 and served in the Coast Guard as a rescue ship. Its portrayed in the movie "Perfect Strom" (a CGI rendering that looks nothing like the real ship)

From what we're aware, an extensive effort is made with these recent sinkings to fully clean the ship of anything that could be harmful to the underwater environment. Understandably, this is a contentious issue though.

@@Skygearsolutions, NOT contentious enough until it is all finally STOPPED! WHY are we wasting all of that material just to benefit divers, dive shops and the ones that get the contract to do the sinkings?

It may appear to be pollution but wrecks provide a home for fish where there wasn’t one before. Aquatic life moves in immediately and it’s quite amazing to see. The wrecks have oil and contaminants removed and if you don’t dive, or haven’t seen how artificial reefs build homes for sea life just look at videos.
