Sir Gawain and the Green Knight isn't just an old poem about chivalry and codes of honour, it also appears to be a meditation upon different types of masculinity. Which story about the sacred masculine is being told here?
In this fifth part of a long rangeing discussion between Dr Gwilym Morus-Baird and the poet and storyteller, Tom Hirons, we enter the final stages of our exploration.

Thank you both for this series. I've enjoyed it a lot and it's prompted me to buy Armitage's translation which is so much more immediate, compelling and visceral than the older 1950s translation I had! Some final thoughts - I think you're onto something about Pwyll and Arawn / Gawain and the Green Knight being about forms of etiquette and ways of behaving towards Otherworld figures. I personally think that due to the similarities of themes and appearance (kinship with wild nature, the theme of striking one blow, having an otherworldly wife/queen), like Arawn, the Green Knight is a King of Annwn, or at least an Annuvian figure. It's notable that Bertilak serves Morgana but in other stories Morgana is a daughter of the the King of Annwn or with the Nine Maidens warms his cauldron (these things often get switched around or turned upside down - the Otherworld's like that!). Pwyll gets it to some degree. Gawain less so. Arthur even less. I think this has something to do with how far these figures hold to the Christian ideals of morality and the dualism that refuses to recognise Annuvian figures as deities and instead renders them not only Other but Hellish. This is seen in extreme in 'The Spoils of Annwn' where Arthur clearly does not know how to behave in the Otherworld, raiding, plundering, returning with only seven men. It's notable that Arthur, who should have accepted the Green Knight's challenge, fails to do so, instead allows Gawain. Pwyll does quite a good job in Arawn's place but Gawain deceives Bertilak/the Green Knight and pays the price. I think these stories are about initiation into Annwn - something Pwyll achieves as Pwyll Pen Annwn but Gawain fails and they pose questions about how we might respond if we should encounter such figures today. I think these stories have a lot to teach us and ask of us today. I recall writing the following lines in a poem inspired by the Green Knight I had published in Myths Inscribed in 2014 - 'Who now would heft your axe, Adhere to your severed speech And proffer their head upon your block?' ezine.mythicscribes.com/issues/issue-4/a-winters-challenge/

I'm glad you mentioned King Math. Game of Thrones is such a huge thing all over the world today, but it wasn't lost on me that Bran (later King Bran) it that prone yet psychic king that can see everything going on inside his realm. So people react to these myths in big ways even today when its dressed up a little differently by a savvy authors like GRR Martin who I know for a fact loves old mythologies....because he's said as much.
