Sir Lindsay Hoyle was forced to apologise to MPs, saying: “It was never my intention for it to end up like this” , after his decision to allow amendments by both Labour and the Conservatives to be debated as part of a Gaza ceasefire vote.
He still faces a potential challenge to his position, with the Scottish National Party (SNP)’s Westminster leader suggesting he should go, and some backbench Tory MPs collecting signatories for a motion of no confidence.
The row led to MPs storming out the chamber.

Basically the SNP were angry they didn’t get cause a split in Labour ditto their friends on the Tory benches, They cared so much about Gaza they decided a tantrum over parliamentary procedure was more important than a purely symbolic vote for a ceasefire in a foreign war. Thanks to Labour MPs a motion calling for a ceasefire has actually passed in Parliament. Don’t let that fact get in the way of the SNP spin though.
@Mark-kh1ny
@Mark-kh1ny 5 ай бұрын
@@pipoo1well glossed over, however the point of why they were angry has clearly passed you by. On one of 3 days the SNP actually get to lead a debate, the speaker’s bias in picking Labour’s amendment and having it voted on first meant they wouldn’t be able to vote on their own motion, on their bloody debating day. Welcome to a democracy, where all sides are allowed to have their say and voice their opinion. The rules are there for a reason.
@kindmulberry7196
@kindmulberry7196 5 ай бұрын
Honestly fair play, as much as I disagree with Tory policy, the Speaker has to be impartial and he wasn't. The Gaza debate is controversial ofc and there's clearly lots of passion and emotion within the debate but the speaker needs to allow both sides of the House to have their say, it isn't democracy otherwise

Shes accumulating a strong record of major statements in the House as leader, and manages to be respected by most of it. Business Questions is often worth a watch - its what PMQs should be more like -with people asking for things to be done , or updates on policy, and she's impressive as someone who can actually say whats going on across government, Shes also deadly when she wants to attack her opponents. I suspect historians will be amazed that the news paper barons and enough MPs instesd inflicted Truss on the country, added to the economic problems, and then enthroned Sunak as the walking Treasury calculator who is weaker in debate, and seems to think doiing nothing will work if you just assume so.

If information comes to light that labour tries to and did bully the speaker into selecting its amendment then, yes he should go. Speaker needs to be strong and impartial of all sides. If he was basically blackmailed he should have said so during his reasoning at the start of the debate or at the end when he looked beaten and on the verge of tears. A person I thought was an honourable and noble parliamentarian, has today not shown himself in the best light what so ever. The commons needs a strong speaker, the likes of which we have not seen since 2000 when the late Betty Boothroyd stepped down.
