Herr Schmidt, the pride in your company and in your boats is quite evident on your face, and quite understandable. You and your team put a lot of effort into quality that isn't obvious to the casual observer but will improve longevity, durability, and safety. The whole team cares about constantly looking for ways to make Sirius Yachts even better. I'm so impressed. Thank you for this look behind the scenes of your company and below the surface of your yachts.

Nothing better than seeing the skills, and wisdom of a craftsman and more impressive is a CEO that has the knowledge and heart in the company and its products. It’s evident everyone at Sirius has the passion. From design, engineering and legacy a company like this is key to being true to the end product and its customers. To see a CEO as knowledgeable and skilled in the design, operations and production is rare. Impressive ! This video look at Sirius manufacturing and the people that are responsible for these beautiful sailboats showcases the quality and engineering. Thank you

Interesting comment. I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue many years ago but have since been "undiagnosed" and treated by a doctor that knows what she is doing. But what I would do five years ago when things were really bad was watch videos on the Jonathon Ward channel. He restores pre1982 Landcruiser fj40's to better than original condition, with new engines, new suspension, and he "geeks out" on creating new bumper designs, dashboard designs...etc... What I find interesting is how I changed into a person that views these craftsmen as artists and what they produce represents freedom. Some of us are not free because our bodies have betrayed us, but the hope and dreams associated with what these artists create has helped me so much.

I´d love a Sirius 48 DS as well, please :-), but if we believe the many testing magazines the Sirius 40 DS already offers the equivalent interior space of a 47-48. But honestly, there will be a larger Sirius once...maybe sooner than later, we already had some meetings about it and are working on first studies...but we do still wonder (why and) where you will need more space. The 40 already features 3 spacious double staterooms, two heads and the workshop. Apart from waterline length for more hull speed we are still searching for additional rectifications for going bigger. Maybe a dingy garage instead of the davits, but this will waiver the possibility of a luxurious aft cabin? … or three instead of 2 of the 3 cabins big enough to be master cabins? …more ideas anybody???

@@SiriusYachts i love this comment! Why make a biger yatch? Just to have more wardrobes? 🤣🤣 Two kitchens maybe? I see a lot of megayatchs or just big ones with excessive "luxury" that seems useles if you're in a boat meant to be sailed, just get a mansion for that! Loving your boats, specially the 310ds and 35ds, my point of view is wanting to solo circumnavigate around the world, and those two are the smallest boats I've seen that feel much bigger, that's not an easy thing to do! And its very important for solo sailing since you want the smallest boat possible to be able to control as much as possible by yourself, while having the best comfort and accessibility possible in long and hard passages and bad weather. Is there more info to read about the keel types/construction method? I've seen the variants on the web but no info apart fron that!

....but I am totally with you, if we are talking quality- and mass production methods! The guys at Hunter, Bavaria, Jeanneau and other mass producers are doing a very good job in terms of "how can I built as much boat for as little money" and I am admiring them for it. This is good for the market, as it brings people onto the water and makes chartering possible for more people….and I am also sure some of them offer very good value for money. What I am wondering since years is, if the balance is still right? There have also been mass produced boats in the 80s and 90s and some of them have been brilliant, ergonomically and solidly built. In the last 20 years, all has been optimised for “how can I reduce the production time from 14 days to 10 days”. But even a Bavaria will be 40 years old at one stage…a Hallberg-Rassy or Sirius maybe 100 years. So how must a boat be constructed and set up? To be “produced 4 days faster” or “how does it benefit from its construction the next 30 to 60 years?” I personally would think, this is too much out of balance in some areas…

Thanks for the compliment and glad you liked it and noticed the dedication for quality! Our boats are available all around the world and been sold to 28 different countries by now. Amongst them the USA and Canada are picking up very fast now...but having said this, we are not building that many compared to others. I am generally very happy that we also have mass producers and less pricy boats to bring people into sailing and holding it more affordable. But we do have found our niche in perfecting our product generally and individually for each and every customer. This does come at a price and will sadly not be affordable for everybody but as they keep their value very, very well sometimes compare very good, even to much lower priced boats, if you calculate deprivation into it as well. The investment into it will still be much higher compared to many. Then there are also used boats on the market profiting from the built quality very much as well even on Sirius Yachts nearly 50 years old now ;-). There are some people nearly in every country who are willing and able to pay for this amount of quality - often instead of going for a much bigger boat - ...and thankfully also many of the min the US

The fact this company is thinking about their boats being around for 100 years and talking about what maintenance future owners might do, and planning for that says a LOT about this company and it’s passion for their customers. Are “some” of the specific 3D CAD drawings (e.g. wiring, measurements, etc) available to owners so they can proper plan future upgrades? Or are they accessible, even for purchase? That would be awesome. I would also like to see how the wiring is run along the boats, are they in conduits, making it easier for future upgrades?
@SiriusYachts

Thank you! And thanks for sharing your thoughts. This approach is also a bit selfish as we plan to be here after 100 years as well (50 covered this spring ;-) and do this maintenance and answer those questions for our owners. Shared documentation with our owners starts with day one and every design we do specifically for the individual need of the customer. When the boat is finally in built we send 30-40 images showing the progress of their yacht in-built to the owners every 2 weeks. We do this over the 4-6months it takes to build a Sirius. By the end the customers are already very familiar with the boat and all its parts and have a much better understanding of its quality and where what is why located. To the delivery the owner will get a book of about 100 pages including about 20 pages of original wiring diagrams of this very boat explaining everything in detail as an owner`s handbook. We keep all this documentation and the 400-500 pictures for later use archived and ready at hand for any phone call or mail we might later get to advice and help

Herr Schmidt, you already make some of the most desirable boats on Earth, I wonder if you have considered sourcing an aluminium hull with a lifting keel, and adding your brilliant design options to make a real go anywhere boat.

Thank you very much! It´s an very interesting topic you are mentioning: Whilst there can a lot to be said about aluminum vs GRP we think that GRP is the better suited and more versatile material for go-anywhere yachts under 60”. This is mainly for weight, interior space, insulation, galvanic and cost reasons. In alu you can´t go under a certain thickness of the material without losing too much of security and so smaller yachts get very heavy or thin. Interior space is much less as the alu hull needs reinforcements sticking into the interior space everywhere as the panels do not have the strength in it selves without the inner structure. This makes every inner surface also down in the bilges a very hard to use and maintain crisscrossed surface. As alu is the perfect thermic leader you need a lot of extra insulation which possible hidden moisture areas in cold and hot climate reducing the interior space even more and making it hard work to get to the skin in any events of checks and repairs. Noise is also leaded on very directly into the interior. Whilst the risk of osmoses in GRP boats in mainly solved by modern resins but certainly by the epoxy coating on the underwater surface, galvanic corrosion is a huge issue and needs absolute care and experts on every installation and mounting of equipment as well as care for the underwater surface. Where building a one-off yacht bigger than 55” yacht might make much sense cost wise, any hull and deck smaller and not one-off, is built for much less costs in GRP from a mold and the money could be invested in a high quality interior, gear and equipment for the same price or sold for much less. Important is for sure that one compares quality to quality and not with mass production. If the layup is built to last and not on the minimum you get a nearly undestroyable boat in GRP, which could also be repaired by yourself or nearly any boat builder around the globe without that special knowledge or tools. If we would built boats only to go around the poles though the ice or big one-offs, we would certainly look into alu for it, but for smaller semi-production boats which should give you the best of everything in 98% of the cruising areas I do not see benefits in alu, but would be interesting to understand your ideas behind it!

As for the lifting keel: You might have seen that our swing keel solution is a totally different concept to normal “integral keels” (which all of the French and British production boats I know have) who only carry a small percentage of the total ballast in the centre board!? I am sure you would appreciate our unique swing keel system. We have constantly conversations with interested customers about swing keels and even if I have really tried to sell them, about 99,5% of this customers are happily buying a twin keel instead....but thats another story ;-). We build the swing keel concept on the base of the same good “up to the wind” and for “rough weather condition optimised” hull as our twin and fin keel boats. This hull relies on weight stability rather than form stability. As far as I know, we are the only manufacturer who do real “swing keels” which are carrying the full ballast in the centre plate. The French and British build boats are “integral-keels” with only 20 to 30% of the ballast in the centre plate and the rest in the grounding plate or inside ballast. To make this work they need to have very flat and wide hulls which rely only on from stability. Unfortunately with this wide and flat hulls there came a number of characteristics like surfing up the waves and slamming, little performance up to the wind, big lift in the cockpit when heeling, easy rounding up into the wind as the shape as the waterline changes tremendously when the boat heels, big distance between the rudders with little maneuverability under engine, big drift sideward and windage in the harbor, little chance to right the boat back up when capsized. Our hull shape stays the same and resembles the shape you would prefer if you are after comfort, good all-round-performance, and security. It has a deep forefoot at the bow which reaches 45cm deep under the water line and is sharp to cut the waves instead of surfing up. It also gives you good hold at the front with wind on the side in harbors. Even if the bow comes out of the water in a big wave it cuts gently back in with the V-shaped spant and does not slam. In the back the waterline narrows extremely on the water line to give the water little resistance in up-wind-sailing, no tendency to round up into the wind and little lift for your crew sitting on the comings of the cockpit as it heels around the center line of the boat and does not “fell” onto its nose. The rig can be taller and the mast stands further back so that you can easier depower the smaller main when opening the sheet and can be more flexible with the variation of head sails. In strong winds this gives you the more secure and gentle sailing being pulled by the front sails rather than pushed by the main sail. As the boat sticks deeper in the water the over water hull must not be as high to get the same internal space. Our deck saloon yachts have the stunning characteristic of no (!) varnishing stability which means that they will upright themselves immediately when capsized and can`t find a way (stability) of staying capsized….but this is all more about the boat than the swing keel...

Quite frankly, these are the kind of explanations you no doubt give your clients, but this material does not all appear on your website, and to me this kind of explanation would be very attractive to potential clients, giving them an understanding of your overall design philosophy. @@marklane5149 I think he is saying that there is no heel angle at which stability vanishes before becoming negative. Herr Schmidt: I know it is popular belief that slamming is avoided by V sections in the bow, but I think this is misleading when relying on the sails to go to windward in strong winds. The severe heel of the boat and the declining angle on the back of the wave as it passes the boat means that it is the flat panels on either side of the bow which hit the water and cause slamming. It's like smacking a block of jelly with a knife: if the knife is sideways on as it approaches the jelly, it doesn't matter how sharp it is, it will not cut in. I learned this early on: my first boat had fine V sections in the bow, as well as a sharp entry angle in plan view, but in heavy weather it slammed so hard that on one occasion I ended up standing in the bilge, after the floor panel I was standing on (plywood, weakened by moisture, but still fairly strong) shattered under my increased weight. I have some ideas about how to reduce flat-panel slamming, which I plan to try out on the sailing vessel I'm currently rebuilding.

interesting the things they do they they probably dont have to. like the capture of the nuts with resin so that the rubbing strake can be serviced or repaired. And the thickness of the veneers to enable varnishing into the future. I mean that someone has to do that and there are a lot of fasteners to deal with, its all time which costs money that theyre putting into the hull

Thanks for sharing! It´s all made as we would do it for ourselves! You know, there have also been mass produced boats in the 80s and 90s and some of them have been brilliant, ergonomically and solidly built.

Just a suggestion - instead of the diesel main motor, put in an electric AC motor, add lithium-ion battery bank, and expand the solar panel area. This setup should allow to sail/cruise on solar all around, a standard small diesel generator could remain to keep the battery bank above a certain trash-hold. This way you would have significantly less moving parts, less noise, and easier/cheaper maintenance. Given that the DS series are already well made solid boats, adding the electric motor option would likely make them one of the most manageable boats to maintain for their size. Something to think about given the maturing market of eco-friendly Millennials.

Wind and water generators, solar power, LION Batteries are quite common in and on our boats by now and electric drives have been projected a number of times. It´s fantastic for some usages...still not for all or one needs to be very enthusiastic....to cope with the extra costs involved. Having a generator on board anyhow for other usage helps in the picture. With the car industry in it full speed not this is for sure becoming more affordable in the near future. The technique is all available

I totally agree. The guys at mass producers are doing a very good job in terms of "how can I built as much boat for as little money" and I am admiring them for it. This is good for the market, as it brings people onto the water and makes chartering possible for more people….and I am also sure some of them offer very good value for money. There is also a huge market for smaller boats between 20 and 30 foot which are great for many areas and fantastic fun. Many of those are available for very good prices. What I am wondering since years is if the balance is still right. There have also been mass produced boats in the 80s and 90s and some of them have been brilliant, ergonomically and solidly built. In the last 20 years, all has been optimised for “how can I reduce the production time from 14 days to 10 says”. Some of the smaller ones had been even near to mass produced and relatively "cheap" at the time but today we have found our niche in perfecting our product generally and individually for each and every customer. This comes at a price and will sadly not be affordable for everybody but as they keep their value very, very well sometimes compare very good even to much lower priced boats if you calculate deprivation into it as well. The investment into it will still be much higher compared to many. Hope you´ll nevertheless find or already own your dream boat!

@@SiriusYachts Hi Torsten, I didn't mean my comment as a criticism of Bavaria, I have sailed many Bavaria yachts and I appreciate that many many people can only sail because such yachts are available. I really meant only that the manufacturing process is at opposite ends of the scale, there would be almost nothing in common between the way you build a boat and the way that Bavaria do.
