The best video monopod on the market! Here is a first look at the Sirui EP-204S and my thoughts on it versus the Sirui P-204S and Manfrotto XPRO Video Monopod.

My guess is that they are counter lock threaded, because if you have the bottom part unlocked for panning/tilting (ballhead), you don't accidentally loosen up the top part. Same goes for the top panning, going the exact opposite of the bottom part, so you don't accidentally loosen the bottom part. It reminds me of self locking quadcopter propellers :P Although now that I think about it, if either one is unlocked, there shouldn't be enough resistance to accidentally unscrew the other. Unless you're adding resistance to the bottom ballhead?
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 7 жыл бұрын
Your explanation makes complete sense, but from actual use, you can actually loosen the various parts if one is too tight and you twist a little bit too hard.
@RagicalPlays

Well, maybe they had the same idea as used for quadcopter props and once it was implemented into the design thought: "But, wait they do turn the other way as well (oops :D)"
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the thought was in the right place but just a little bit of use would've shown that there was room for improvements.

Thanks for this review. I just returned my twist lock sirui for this one also. I think the design of these monopods is much more robust than manfrottos xpro

I think the Sirui offers more bang for the buck but I may be picking up an xpro monopod soon to see if it's worth it.

Thanks for the review man! This was much needed. To comment on your complaint about the upper pan locking mechanism, they actually did design it to go along with the "righty tighty lefty loosy" convention, it just depends on what direction you're looking at it from. When you screw a bottle cap back onto a bottle, you turn right to tighten the cap and the cap moves in the downwards vertical direction. When you screw the pan locking mechanism to tighten it it actually moves upwards. In order to make up for this you have to either flip your convention (righty loosey, lefty tighty) or turn the entire monopod upside down so that the component moves in the downwards vertical direction when you screw it back into place. Was that too confusing?

Ahhh good observation. That would make the most sense! Thanks for watching the video.

I thought the same thing, but I guess it really depends on whether or not you're inclined to flip the monopod in order to perform the twist.

When you remove the top part of the monopod from the legs it must be less than the 24" what is the monopod length. For packing purposes it must be less than 20".

Some reviews are saying the EPS series is much more wobbly than the PS series in terms of free-standing. Like "it's not entirely a flip-lock version of P204S". What would you say to that? QC issues? 🤔
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 6 жыл бұрын
+mactopia1 Almost any video monopod you buy is going to be wobbly. If a big enough gust of wind hit them, they will topple. For me, they are not a tripod replacement but more of quick convenience. I wouldn’t leave my camera gear stand but itself without me watching.

I've been waiting for this monopod's review for a while. I think I'm in the same boat as you were, not sure whether to choose this or the manfrotto x-pro. And I always hurt my fingers when I was trying to use this EP-204S model, it got stuck in that small flip lock design, unlike the larger design of the manfrotto flip lock which the tripod I use and my finger never got stuck. I've used the P-204S twist model thinking that it's better than the manfrotto because it has pan on the upper body. but when I used it, I always ended up using the bottom feet for pan and move around. I don't find useful to pan from the upper part unless I lock the bottom feet so it doesn't move, but I will lose the monopod style movement angle and I'm getting a tripod like pan but less stable.. What are your thoughts on this?
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 7 жыл бұрын
I'm the opposite of you. I like to pan from the top and usually have the bottom locked until I have to tilt. I don't like the Manfrotto feet because there is no way to differentiate the pan from tilt unless you are just being extremely careful because they unlock at the same time. I've never liked this design. They do the same thing on some of their cheaper ball heads, where pan and tilt are released with one lever instead of two. To me, this makes panning absolutely useless because you have no control. An example of what I'm talking about is the rc2 head on the Manfrotto Befree. I like to have separate locking controls over the various functions. It's unfortunate that the EP-204S is hurting your fingers like that. I don't have that problem. I only have a problem with its aesthetic design. I hope you're able to find a video monopod that works for you as they are very convenient tools.

Do you prefer the Sirui EP - 204 S (made of aluminum) over the EP-224 S (made of carbon fiber) ?
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 6 жыл бұрын
The price vs weight reduction by upgrading to the EP-224S does not make sense, this is why I purchased the EP-204S.

Nice review! I was actually surprised to see the EP-204S randomly show up after hours of research on the P-204S. I do have a question for you though, since you happened to have owned both models. You mentioned that the EP-204S folded is 24 inches while the P-204S is 27...so can you tell me (since I can't seem to find it anywhere) how this length is distributed on both models? By that, I mean when you detach the top section from the hi-hat how long are each pieces on their own. Thanks!
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 7 жыл бұрын
+Scott Boldberg Thanks for watching Scott! Unfortunately, I cannot help you with this question. As mention, I actually got rid of the P-204S for the EP-204S because I didn't like the twist locks. If I had to take an educated guess, I would say 3 maybe 4 inches for the base alone.

Thanks for the quick response! I would have guessed something around there as well from all the videos I've seen. I just have a bit of an unconventional backpack, so I need something around 44 cm. I really love this monopod, but because of my length limitation I might have to go with the Manfrotto befree compact tripod. Thanks again!

It seems like it would likely work well, but I was somehow really loving the longer hi-hat legs on the P-204S. The more I thought about it, the more I saw myself not wanting to always stand right next to the monopod during time lapse/long exposures. I think when the time comes, I'll still eventually buy a monopod from Sirui or Manfrotto. :-)
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 7 жыл бұрын
+Scott Boldberg Good luck with your decision! I have been using the Manfrotto a lot more as it's more compact. Overall I would say the Sirui is a better video monopod but there are a lot of knobs. The Manfrotto is just faster to use and I like that.

Gitzo or not, if there is no absolute confirmation of lock, human error applies and there is a higher possibility of the lock not being tight enough.

I don't have the P-204S anymore so can't say for certain, but I would say that they are marginally different that I doubt that one would be more stable than the other based on the leg length.

+TheUpperLeftUSA.com you know what, you just sold me this Monopod ! I've ordered last night. I want a sturdy Monopod for video. I'm thinking to add Manfrotto mvh502ah fluid head on top of this. any idea how that setup works?
@HaiTran
@HaiTran 7 жыл бұрын
I actually have the 502 and have used it with this monopod. My question is do you have the 502 or are you planning on buying it? If you don't already have the 502, I'd suggest going with something like the Benro S7. They are similar spec-wise but the S7 have the adjustable counter balance. I have both and prefer the S7.

Both the 502 and S7 use the same plate. Most higher end fluid heads will use the Manfrotto quick release plate.

I'm assuming you mean at the handle? There is little to none. You can add a little resistance by tightening the twist collar a bit but I wouldn't recommend it because it can add unwanted jitters.
