In the beginning stages of doing research on these 2 monopods, I was a bit sceptical of what the construction of the SIRUI 204S might be like. I had worked with MANFROTTO MONOPODS in the past and had always liked their solid construction and ease of use. I had not seen a SIRUI 204S, but I had heard some positive comments about the great features it had to offer but I had read negative comments about the locking and binding of telescoping sections. I decided to test them both side by side. I purchased both monopods myself since both manufacturers did not feel it was necessary to provide me with the product because they felt that their products had already been proven in the marketplace. I wanted to see for myself how they stacked up against each other.
Both Monopods are well constructed out of good quality aluminium and stand at 27.5 inches collapsed. Extended The MANFROTTO is 76" high and the SIRUI is 63". Although I am partial to clip locks on the MANFROTTO's extension tubes the SIRUI twist locks seem to function ok. I did have a bit of difficulty with one extension tube and twist lock in the beginning but the problem seemed to go away. I will come back with any updates.
The MANFROTTO comes with a nice plate and sled for mounting your camera to for easy access of sliding your camera on and off without having to unscrew it all the time. The MANFROTTO also supplies you with 2 replacement screws should you lose one and they store in the side of the plate so you don't lose them.
Now for the meat and potatoes! The SIRUI BLOWS The MANFROTTO away in terms of features as far as a basic monopod goes. The stabiliser feet on the SIRUI are 6.75" vs. 4.5" on the MANFROTTO. Deploying the feet are also easier on the SIRUI which requires pushing a single button instead of wrestling with the MANFROTTO way of deploying the feet. The SIRUI also allows you to lock out the tilt assembly at the base so you can actually use it as a tripod if you put a sandbag on the base for stability. By putting a sandbag on the feet for safety you can avoid an accidental tumble with your gear on it in case of a sudden breeze or imbalance issue. The SIRUI also breaks apart so you can use the base separately as a table top tripod which also tilts. I found this to be very handy when using my Dji OSMO MOBILE . You can use the SIRUI as a standard MONOPOD by retracting the feet and using the single rubber plug that is standard on the bottom or switching it out with the included spike tip which you can use it on soft materials like sod, sand, dirt etc. The spike also has a protective cap(included) so you don't accidently hurt yourself or someone else. Also included were 3 allen keys for making adjustments and tightening the spike on the bottom of the monopod.
I enjoyed using the SIRUI 204S and will most likely keep it to use and further test.

Thank you for your video. I have been looking for a good monopod recently and was actually gunning for a Manfrotto since I have been using a Manfrotto tripod for years. But could not really find a good one that has the features that I need and within my limited budget 😉 Until a sales person from a local camera store introduced me to Sirui - same model as what you have featured here. I have no issues the twist locking mechanism of Sirui. I think I now have made up my mind 😄 Thanks again!

Hi Raymond, I am glad you like it. It is definitely my all time go to monopod. I just wish it collapsed into a smaller package and it was a bit lighter in weight.

I recently bought the sirui on eBay and I have to agree. The quality is great! The design, versatility and stability is what makes this a top product. Speed of unlocking/locking isn’t important for me therefore, the twist knobs are ok. They also look better and don’t stick out.

Hi Andreas, Thank you for taking the time to let me know. I really like this monopod and I am still using it. You cannot beat the quality. I would like something as versatile but a bit smaller and lighter. Carbon fiber? If you found my review helpful please consider subscribing.

I agree with you on all points except the fact that I dont like the twist locks. They are just too time consuming. If sirui puts the clamp locks on it woudl be better.

Dear, But I need a smooth camera moviment and I need change fast the height camera because I shot bands and social events and I will use the monopo to run between the person to film some takes of the guitars, singer, etc 1) Wich is the best for smooth moviment (pan and tilt with monopod)? do you think the sirui have a smooth moviment when unscrew the blue part in footprint (3:38 of the video)? I'm asking because Manfrotto call/speak a lot about flui footprint camera moviments 2) Do you think the clip locks system (of Manfrotto) is more fast than twist locks (of Sirui)? thanks a lot

The fluid neck on the Sirui is pretty good. I liked it better than my Manfrotto but then again, it was an older model. I still think it is pretty smooth. This Siuri also comes in a snap lock model for about the same price. Snap locks are faster. I hope this answers your questions

What do you think of these monopods compared to the cobra strike 2?
@AZCAMERAREVIEWS
@AZCAMERAREVIEWS 4 жыл бұрын
Since I do not own a cobra strike 2 and one has not been sent to me for review I find it hard to give you my honest opinion. I did however look at a few videos on your behalf. I cannot speak to the actual feel and construction of the Cobra Strike 2 but the one feature I did like was the easy snap off head and base quick disconnect and the versatile 1/4-20 screw adapter. It does seem to lack a fluid panning feature the the Sirui and Manfrotto have.

Just wondering why you compared the Sirui with an outdated Manfrotto monopod? Manfrotto released in 2016 the new XPRO monopod series which are way better than this Sirui... Regards from Spain

Hi Jan, Good question. I had the Manfrotto sitting here as it was B Stock (New but Opened). I had bought the Sirui off of Ebay as a B Stock Item for $40 below MSRP. I had seen the Sirui P-204S at a camera store here in town and I found that it had some wonderful features that my present Manfrotto did not have. The thing I liked best about the Manfrotto is the thumb locks, height and that it comes with the plate. Possibly if Manfrotto would like to make an XPRO available to me I would do another head to head comparison. I can be contacted privately @ azcamerareviews@gmail.com if anybody wants me to test their equipment honestly.

By the time you've messed around with a Sirui any wildlife would have left half an hour ago. I would love to see both out in the field where I can't see the Sirui being any use at all. Very gimmicky but impractical. It sounded more like you justifying your purchase than a review.
@AZCAMERAREVIEWS
@AZCAMERAREVIEWS 7 жыл бұрын
Mark Harris > I can see your point. Although this monopod may not fit your particular uses in the field, you might want to look into the newer model that uses thumb locks instead of twist locks but has all the same features. I was not justifying anything. I absolutely like this monopod. I use it all the time. if you feel it is not right for you, you can always select a pod with less features or lug around a cheap tripod of the same weight or go with the old standard but expensive, light carbon fiber tripod. if I were to do it again I would have purchased the model with the thumb locks and made of carbon fiber. possibly Sirui will see this and send me one to review. Stay tuned!

I'm disabled so weight works the other way round for me, I like heavier stuff as it's usually more robust. I never hike anywhere and my scooter carries the weight. I can honestly say I've never chosen, or needed to choose, any camera product on its price, although. I'm sensible enough to look for a bargain. I use a 20 years old Manfrotto with a tri-ferrule used for a walking stick on it and a Arca Swiss head. But, for wildlife photography I have have it set up and can be shooting, even with my disabilities in 20 seconds and I can be on a bird following the most erratic flight path without losing it. The ferrule also gives it good balance without me having to bend to get down to any feet which would only get in my way. It's that efficiency that matters to me and most wildlife photographers, and precious seconds wasted setting up a monopod just hinders a shoot. I think I could get any of my Manfrotto tripods set up before such a complex monopod. We each look for different things in photography and for me speed, efficiency, durability and practicality are the things I look for.

You are correct! Different people have different needs and preferences when it comes to photography. I don't know your level of disability but some disabled, people require different mobility devices suited to their particular needs whether it be a cart that has more agility, can carry heaviar loads utilizing better suspention and higher torque motors, can manuver in various terrains or surface conditions, etc. Each individual has their own needs and requirements. That being said, the Sirui totally fits my needs and expectaions of what I require in a stabilizing device for my needs. Additionally, some people do not have deep pockets to buy the state of the art, best gear on the market. Sure, I would love to own Leica Cameras with all Zeiss lenses but I cannot afford them nor can I afford a Linhof Tripod, so, it looks like I am limited to what I can spend. It is always nice to dream though.

As someone who's been using the Sirui for about half a year now I can tell you it doesn't actually take that long to set up. You give the locks a half twist and it breaks free then you extend and tighten in one smooth motion. You can also undo two locks in one twist cause your hand is big enough, let the weight extend the monopod, maintain my hand on the first lock and lock that in one smooth motion after it drops. Then I move my hand on the second lock, while my other hand is adjusting for proper height then lock it in one smooth motion. When I'm deployed I leave the feet open and walk with the Sirui like a cane and sometimes I pretend I'm Gandalf about to tangle with a Balrog. I use the bag in a way that I only pull the monopod from the top like it was a pringles can (can't think of any other way to describe it) so I don't have to unzip it the entire way that it would tangle with the strap or bag handles. Only thing I would have asked for is if I could kick the feet open and / or closed instead of having to press a button.
