👍👍for the 25th anniversary re-issue 'Midnight Cowboy', originally released in 1969...the only X-rated film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, and it does "stand the test of time"! Listen for Nilsson singing "Everybody's Talkin'" during the film, and John Barry's unforgettable score!

I agree with their take on Reality Bites. I just was angry that she chose that asshole Troy. I’m not saying she should’ve ended up with Michael, but at least not choosing Troy would’ve been fine.

Siskel hit the nail on the head with "The Critic". It had potential if it stayed focused on the movies. Eventually it became a run-of-the-mill sitcom with the movies in the background (or even left them out completely).

Midnight Cowboy captures New York effectively. You arrive there hoping you will improve yourself and accomplish your goals. Instead, it becomes a psychological prison and wasteland of loneliness and shattered dreams.

IMO, the fact that Winona chose Ethan Hawke is very representative of the 90s at the time. Girls wanted to get with troubled men to "change" them and to become their everything.

only because Winona's character made no sense. She gets irrationally mad at Stiller for his bosses altering her documentary (even though he had nothing to do with it) , and she uses that anger as an excuse to seek out Ethan's character for comfort and they have sex. Its like she was just waiting for Stiller's character to have some real or imagined misstep and justify leaving him for the guy she wanted all along...........but the Ethan Hawke character was just a moody aimless guy who used his "intelligence" just to get off witty remarks.

OK, here's what I thought of the movies they reviewed--MIDNIGHT COWBOY really was a film that made it's mark on the world when the Western was dying and it returned to the real world, THE CRITIC was a watermark show that deserved the notoriety it got--maybe more, REALITY BITES really did capture Generation X--although we may look back on some of these people with contempt today...

i remember "Reality Bites" and the film "Singles" came out about the same time in the early 90s height of grunge alt rock period. and at the time i was just entering my 20s and personally did not care at all for the mainstream handed to you on a plate alternative explosion. but i watched both films and didnt think much of them, but for some reason in the past couple years i had gotten a little nostalgic. not about the grunge era 90s but simply about the time period that my 20s just happened to take place in. and i went out and got "Reality Bites" and "Singles", i still dont think "Singles" is that great but for some reason i have watched it 3 or 4 times in the last couple of years. so i guess there is something in it that i find compelling even if i dont care for all of it. but trying to watch "Reality Bites" i was just rolling my eyes non stop for like 20 minutes and then just could not even finish it, god it is so much worse than i even remember from the first time i didnt like it.

@maxxxmodelz4061
@maxxxmodelz4061 3 жыл бұрын
The soundtrack for Singles was the soundtrack of my late teens/early 20s and defined the 90s for me. I was just out of high school back then, and the world of music, style, and technology was changing at a rapid pace back then. Computers were finally finding their way into every household by 1996, and it really did feel like something big was happening. Like we were part of a social change or shift that was leading us into the new millennia. All these years later, it does seem like that feeling was true. We were, and still are, in the digital revolution. 50 years from now, this era will be seen in the same way as the industrial revolution was.

Reality Bites is bad for the same reason the musical Rent is stuck in a time capsule. The whole “If you work a good job, you’re a sellout” thing was in direct backlash to the Michael Keatons of the 80s. It was a toxic & childish period of time.

1. Midnight Cowboy - one of 1960s ephemeral movies, an adaptation of James Leo Herlihy's novel about the friendship between male hustlers 👍👍👍 2. The Scent of Green Papaya - a meditative tale of a girl whose life as a servant was changed with the help of music. Oscar nominee, Best Foreign Language Film (Vietnam) 👍 3. Blue Chips - a conventional story about a college basketball coach who is struggling to create a competent team 👎 4. Reality Bites - an appealing cast cannot hide the familiar plot of this Gen-X themed Ben Stiller film 👎

What they're saying about REALITY BITES--the movie DID NOT go for the cliche, because the cliche would have been Lelina choosing the righteous Michael. The successful decent guy who treats her well and defends her work. But... here, the girl picks the bastard. And guess what? We don't often see that in the movies. But... that's often the way it is in real life, isn't it?

_The Critic:_ Gene says it has no memorable characters, then calls out Ted Turner-esque supervillain Duke Philips, and mad ex-NY Governor Franklin, A.K.A. Nilknarf. Gene's been mixing Dayquil and Nyquil again. Both of those characters could have starred in their own spin-offs. (Which might even have been better than the original.)

Paul Schrader talked about this recently. Back in the 60s and 70s, people wanted provocative films. After the 70's, they wanted to forget the dark times. His point was, audiences change and not the pictures.

I felt the same about Liar, Liar that they felt about Reality Bites. Jim Carey was an awful father and person, and the guy marrying his ex-wife was a genuinely kind guy who took an interest in his fiance's son instead of being a dick to him like most movie step-fathers. Jim's character didn't deserve a second chance, and certainly didn't deserve his son's love.

This is the 6th time at least where I've seen siskel not like a movie as he compares it to a similar film he likes better. He should judge it by it's own merits. He did this w/ silence of the lambs saying it wasnt as good as henry portrait of a serial killer. He felt the killers in sotl were " too over the top " but the killers in henry are quiet uninteresting people " I was glad ebert said not to compare the two & its the movies they are supposed to sorta make the characters interesting. I found buffalo bill was a weirdo anto social anyway. He also thought hopkins was over the top & the intro of him w/ the music & how it was done. Ebert again said " gene its the movies its supposed to be dramatic & interesting. " Ita about reality bites. I also wished Winona wound up w/ the non cliche. Wow they totally spoiled that. I agree with them about reality bites. I knew Winona 's character was gonna in the end go for ethan Hawke who was the typical 90s angry young man.

They really have a point. Troy is a blowhard--Lelina and Troy have feelings for each other and try to mask them with contempt for each other. Troy has to change and admit himself if he wants a future with her. But.... this is how it goes it real life--a woman is more interested in the handsome charismatic jerk (lacking in potential) for a good, solid dependable man. Maybe if Troy really did see the light and better himself... but we never see real redemption in Troy.

Lol! Gene and Roger are echoing the same sentiments about Reality Bites, that All men complain about; women choosing the wrong men. Well, men choose the wrong women based on their body and not their character, and women know that, so both genders are on the same level. I am really tired of Gene's inane comments on Roger's weight here. Tired, Gene, you're talking about films being smarter, so be smarter....
