I bought my grandmothers old 1984 Monte Carlo SS, which was her daily driver when I was a kid, it's a car I've wanted my whole life. It's sat, not running for over 22 years. I finally got to buy it, and bring it home. We checked it over, and it now it's time to get it running and driving again!

Love this car! The cold start issue: the metering wells on Qjets are known to leak, and after sitting overnight, all the fuel leaks out of the carb into the intake, so it takes a few cranks to fill the fuel bowl again. When you rebuild the carb, mix up some JB weld (or other fuel-safe epoxy) and liberally cover the main and secondary jet wells on the bottom of the main body of the carb directly below the main jets. I'm sure you can find pics/vids of what I'm talking about, and I bet Derek has told you about that issue, too. Man I'd love to get my hands on one of these in that condition!!

Exactly what I'd do! Modernize the things that sucked on old cars (and if you don't think 80's brakes and suspension sucked, you've got some heavy nostalgia), clean it up nice and fresh, sort the wheels and tyres and just enjoy. Next step would be tidying that bay. No big mods, don't need 1000hp turbo LS or anything but something a little more modern and clean is all you need
@trumbley22
@trumbley22 Жыл бұрын
@@helplmchoking If you think 80's brakes and suspension sucked, you're clueless. It's not sports car suspension, it's a smooth riding cruising car, and for that the suspension and brakes are perfect.
@helplmchoking
@helplmchoking Жыл бұрын
@@trumbley22 For this car maybe, but they still can't compete with a modern setup in terms of absorbing bumps without getting that soft, floaty secondary ride. And brakes absolutely were worse, that's just a fact, though the 60's and 70's were definitely a lot worse than something like this. I think the kit this car has was totally fine back in the day, though certainly a little more old fashioned than a similar German car from Mercedes or BMW at the time, but still objectively worse than what could be achieved with today's technology
@trumbley22
@trumbley22 Жыл бұрын
@@helplmchoking Lumping all 80's brakes and suspension to be junk just shows you don't know a lot about cars. It's not a sports car, it was a family car. You can't compare it to sports cars of today, because it never was one.
@helplmchoking
@helplmchoking Жыл бұрын
@@trumbley22 No, and I'm not. But an Audi A3 sedan or 530i, both standard family cars, or even things like Cadillacs or like a 300c - none of which are sporty - will all handle better, ride more smoothly and stop far faster than a 40 year old Monte Carlo. There were some truly impressive machines from back in the day (we all know how great the OG GTR was in the 80's) but my point is that anything from 40 years ago cannot compete with an equivalent vehicle from now. A Testarossa can't hold a candle to a 458, a Monte Carlo wouldn't be as smooth, quiet or pleasant as a Lexus

Man - You had / have one cool Grandma, Brother!! What a car! My Cousin in Delaware had one just like this. I think maybe it was an '86 or '87 Monte Carlo SS. White like this one, but had some red and black accents on it. The badging, etc. That thing roared, and I was always in awe of it - and of him, for driving it. He always seemed to have the chics checking it out too. Wow. Memories. This is a killer car, Brother. Love it, and CAN NOT wait to see it... or at least I hope I can see it, when the final version is rolling. Beautiful classic, and what memories you've got.
