*Lyrics and meaning:* rAgam: mAyAmALavagauLai tALam: rUpakam Composer: Gopalakrishna BhArati Background: nandanAr was born in poverty, lived in the village of AdanUr (near Cidambaram) in outbacks. He developed a yearning to visit the shrine of tiruppunkUr (an abode of lord Shiva) not far from AdanUr. So he gathers his farm colleagues together and tells them the benefits of worshipping lord Shiva at the tiruppunkUr temple. Many of them were skeptical about the benefit. But nandanAr had a commanding influence over them and hence they complied. Let us read what he (nandanAr) says. பல்லவி: சிவலோக நாதனைக்கண்டு சேவித்திடுவோம் வாரீர் Pallavi: sivalOka nAthanaik kaNDu sEvittiduvOm vArIr (Let us go and worship the lord of SivalOkam - at tiruppunkUr) சரணம் அற்பசுகத்தை நினைந்தோம் அரன்திருவடி மறந்தோம் கற்பிதமான ப்ரபஞ்சமிதைக் கானல் சலம்போலே யெண்ணி (சிவ) CaraNam 1: aRpa sukhattai ninaindOm aran tiruvaDigaLai maRandOm kaRpitamAna prapancamidaik kAnal jalampOlE eNNi (We were thinking only about our personal petty comforts but we did not remember to worship his holy feet. Without knowing a way out of the bondage we became helpless creatures.) மானிடசன்மங் கொடுத்தார் தன்னை வணங்கக்கரங்க ளளித்தார் தேனும்பாலும் போலே சென்று தேரடியில் நின்றுகொண்டு (சிவ) CaraNam 3: mAniDa janmam koDuttAr tannai vaNangak karangaL aLittAr tEnum pAlum pOlE senRu tEraDiyil ninRukoNDu (The lord gave us our human births. He gave us our hands to worship him (with folded hands). Let us all go like honey and milk together near the entrance (where the temple chariot is parked) to the temple and worship the lord). அநுபல்லவி பவபயங்களைப் போக்கி அவர் பரம பதத்தைக் கொடுப்பா ரந்த (சிவ) bhava bhayangaLaip pOkki avar parama padattai koDuppAr - anda (He will eliminate the misery of repeated births and grant us entry into his own abode.) By virtue of their being born in a lower class, they would have to stay at a distance away from the sanctum (outside the temple premises) and that does not deter him from going and seeing the lord from a distance. He stood outside the temple, but a huge stone Nandi (the bull mount of Shiva, facing Shiva in the garbhagriha - sanctum sanctorum) blocked his path of vision. The compassionate Shiva ordered Nandi to move a little to side and the bull complied, allowing the Nayanar to see the central icon of Shiva, unobstructed. Nandanar cleaned up the surroundings of the temple and dug a pond (which serves as the temple tank) in honour of Shiva. He circumambulated the shrine and returned to Adanur.
