The entire arc of Lisa's disappearance is one of the boldest pieces of storytelling I've seen on a TV show. It hits you like a truck out of nowhere and completely fucks you up emotionally.

There never was, is now, or as long as human beings make film, a greater show than Six Feet Under. And every episode is a movie unto itself. I am on my.....I don't know how many viewings. been watching it straight, (with the exception of the odd good movie) for 5 years now. And every run through I see something new. Thank you Alan Ball.

I was told to watch the series by a friend after having sat with and poured out my heart about the loss of my wonderful German shepherd that died a couple of days earlier. I raised her from a pup and we moved around the U.S. with my work in chemical engineering. So, even though I left gf's and work friends behind, she was always with me on that journey. So, when I saw the friend about a month later, she looked at me with enthusiasm and I asked; "What's up?" She asked; "So, did you watch SFU?" I replied; "Why would I want to watch a series about death when I just lost my dog?" And she said; "It shouldn't be called what it is. It should be called LIFE." So, I signed up for Netflix and got the first DVD in the mail a few days later. I was stunned with the first episode. I couldn't wait for each DVD. In fact, after having gone through the first 4 seasons one DVD at a time, I purchased the entire series on-line as my elderly mom was due to visit about a month later. I waited until she came and I watched the first 4 seasons over again with her and we watched the final season together. It was the first time in my life (my mom was 40 when she married my dad who was 25 and she worked while we went to school as kids and she retired only after I left home to work for Kodak) that her and I watched something together on TV that was more than just a show here or there. When I found black mold growing in the house I was renting (I was having trouble breathing at times and went to see a doctor who eventually stated it may be something I was allergic to) within 10-15 minutes I packed up the car and drove away from the house I had rented for most of my adult life and found a hotel 12 miles up the expressway and checked in. Of the few things I saved and took with me out of that house that day, the boxed set of Six Feet Under was one of them.

@@earthshinestudios8736 What a interesting story, and the way SFU was brought into your life. For me, since I posted that comment, my partner of 9 years has died (last September) I still stand by my original comment, but I can't bring myself to watch it again right now... But I will someday.

@@Sunisrisin I am sorry to hear of what has happened in the last year. We all go through similar things and have things happen to us. But, of all the entertaining films and TV series, it touched my heart the most. I loved the music used in the pilot when Nate was dreaming of his childhood. That scene is etched in my mind and the scene that ended the pilot with Nate coming to a busy intersection after going out for a run and then seeing his dad as if glimpsing into a parallel universe. I remember when I first experienced that scene - and as if I was the director, I said to myself - Let them see each other as the bus pulls away. The greatest gift of this show is summed up in moments. In a moment of loss & sadness, when I witnessed that the father got to see and wave to his eldest son, I had a moment of sadness replaced with a moment of happiness. I wish you moments of happiness.

The quirkiness is what attracted me. I loved the ads for the products and how ridiculous it made the whole process seem. I have never understood preserving a body in an expensive box just to put it into the earth. I've never understood making yourself go through staring at the empty shell of a loved one, tying yourself to a location where their remains are, having to think of decomposition of their body (if you're morbid like me). I'm for cremation and a memorial service filled with happy pictures, videos and memories all the way. Six feet under really helped me determine my final resting plans and place. I've watched the entire series 3 times. It's becoming a yearly fall and winter addiction. It's my most fave show of all time and I'm a Netflix and Prime junkie so I've seen dozens of entire series.

...I can relate to poor Nate in this episode. After he buries Lisa, he tries covering the grave spot. Stomping and spreading dirt all over the ground. It's his screams that get me going...I've felt the same way before in a similar situation. I've almost cut the episode off early when watching it to not go through it again. They did a remarkable job on pulling emotion out of you with Six Feet Under... There'll never be another show like it. Ever.

I know that Thomas Newman wrote the intro theme, but I was always under the assumption that he did all the stock music in Six Feet Under as well. Marvin's work, however, is very similar to Newman's on film like Road to Perdition and American Beauty. Marvin's soundtrack, as well as the music they licensed for the series was amazing.

Serious spoilers for me too, I'm only on season 1. But if Nate is mourning the loss of a chick named Lisa, that means Brenda gets kicked to the curb at some point, which makes me happy, since I'm not a fan of her character at all. Guess I have a beautiful, distraught Nate to look forward to.

Peter Krause proved why he was the best actor on this show in that scene. Unfortunately, Nate spent the rest of the series mired in a relationship with Brenda. Maya is the one you feel bad for, because she was left to be raised by that neurotic nutcase.
