I've been meaning to watch this show for so long, finally in 2021 I watched it. I can't thank everyone who was involved in making this show enough. I've watch many incredible films and television series, and I truly believe this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen committed to screen. What's so incredible is that not only is the show fairly consistent, but also each season feels like a different experience. None of the seasons are too much alike, and I consider each one a film in a larger franchise. As for the finale, I nearly hyperventilated for 10 mins straight after. I'm not proud of how long I ugly cried, but the way the intended message of the show washed over me was incredible. To find that the show is not about death but in fact, is about life, absolutely shattered me. It is a thing of beauty.

I just watched this series in 2020, as I've never had HBO until now and I absolutely bawled my eyes out when this series was over. I loved how it crosses all of the boundaries surrounding death. I've always been afraid of death so this series actually helped me be less afraid. Which is crazy how a show can do that vs a therapist. I love how some of these actors also moved over into American Horror Story. They work so well together. Next up for me: Dexter. Oh, if you have Audible and are a Stephen King fan, Michael C. Hall narrates Pet Semetary!

Have you watched Dexter yet? Me and my husband, we RARELY agree on tv shows, like a handful in 22 years now, but Six Feet Under and Dexter were two that were weekly appointment television for us as a couple, and I miss having some amazing show to sit down and watch, and look forward to. It’s so rare that a show makes you wait all week, and all season break for it to come back for it.

I just finished watching all five seasons. thanks so much for posting this beautiful tribute. Six Feet Under is by far the best show HBO ever put out & I would argue one of the best TV shows to ever air. I didn't know about the American Beauty connection but looking back, I can't believe I ever missed it, it is so obvious once you know!

I don't think a lot of people watching Six Feet Under now (and maybe for the first time) realize just how groundbreaking this show was. In 2001, TV was rarely this great. A "TV show" made to this high standard . . . it just wasn't done. TV shows were a shadow of what we expected to see at the movies. They weren't anywhere near that level. We're spoiled for choice now, Nexflix, HBO, Amazon, Showtime. They all do high quality stuff now, major series with great acting and big budgets. They outclass what is on regular TV now. And it was a show like Six Feet Under that raised the bar big time.

Alan Ball, it was more than a really good show. It was the best show ever...and after the 8 years since it's been over, I've not found another group of characters that resonate so deeply within me. Shameless is about the only one that has come close, but more so because it makes me feel so much less fucked up in comparison, I think.

Claire is my favorite by a long shot, but I also really love all the other characters, some because I like them as people and others because I HATE how they behave. I hated Margaret, Lisa, Billy and Maggie as people, but the show wouldn't have been the same without them.

Five yrs before the series began, I had lost my father to cancer and two weeks later my husband age 35 and our son age 7. They died together in front of our 11 yr old daughter. They drowned while swimming. I had no idea he had taken them to the lake near our new home. Summer had just began. He was supposed to take them to the pool. I had just gone back to work in a medical sales job after taking a leave to help my mother care for my father so that he could die at home. Since it had been hours since I’d seen my husband and son and then it was late the following day before I saw them at the funeral home, I struggled almost in being able to believe they were really gone. I had their bodies transferred to a funeral home in our hometown. So it took hours in transfer and planning before we saw them. I asked my husbands brother to go back down with me that evening since he was the only one I really trusted. I asked the funeral director if I could hold my son. She got me a rocking chair and picked him up and placed him in my arms. They were full, yet very empty. However, I think I would’ve eventually gone mad if I had done that. My poor brother in law, who’d just lost his 36;yr old wife to a severe asthma attack 3 yrs prior nearly lost his mind seeing me hold my son. He finally told me he understood my need but couldn’t go with me again if I went back to hold him. I’m felt bad. It was just the trust thing as to why I asked him to go with me. I did so every night until the funeral. I needed to. My eyes could see what my heart couldn’t understand . I knew to survive it I’d have to make my heart understand. Then the day of the funeral after the service, everyone (approx 400 people) filed past the matching caskets. Then our families. I walked up and bid my husband good bye. Walked up to my son. As they were closing his casket I suddenly shove my hand in and screamed “NO ,” I was mortified . I hadn’t planned that response. It just happened. I reached for my husbands brother. (I thought I whispered but found out yrs later I’m had screamed it.) , but I said “Joe, I can’t let them take him! “. I heard my moms oldest sister gasp out loud and stole a scream “oh dear god,” in pain for me. It was my BIL that actually whispered. He leaned in and whispered in my ear, “Kathy....he’s already gone.” At that exact moment I saw someone I know going out the door in my peripheral vision which saved me in that moment. I ran out of the church and grabbed he and his wife and thanked them for coming. Then I hadn’t been there to see the finality of it all in that moment. The producer of Six Feet commented in a post production interview that grief can be like going insane. He’s absolutely. I am embarrassed now for the insanity I allowed to over take me. But everyone tells me I survived something most people never get close to experiencing and came out the other side. This may well be true. But never the less Iam embarrassed and still pained by the 5 yrs preceding those deaths... I eventually moved away again and remarried. Since I was young enough I went on to have two more sons. There is a photo taken the day after the first of the two was born. I held him in the crook of my left arm as he slept. Am laying my head against his with my eyes closed as well. I was very pale, having a a csection the day before. I remember clearly feeling like I w as holding a piece of heaven in my arms l. I was also pale because it had finally occurred to me exactly how insane the last yrs had been ! That the birth was my cue from above to “SNAP OUT OF IT !” , and I DID. Oh I’ve made plenty of mistakes since. But I have a new found peace and new found meaning of life about myself. Sometime I think I was a different kind of insane to think for a moment that I was capable of pulling my proverbial shit together enough to raise him and my youngest . But they are 18 and 15 now and I’m happy I chosentomhave the tubal repair so that I could have them. Thx to the writers, producers, actors etc for this amazing show. It too helped me gain new insights about living in between the two births. When I saw that this show was coming out, I was certain I’d hate it. But to my shock and surprise I actually enjoyed it, and finished healing because of it.

After watching Dexter seasons 1-4 I was looking at MCH's filmography and saw this show and read some reviews an it completely changed the way I look at everything. I tried watching other hit HBO and Showtime shows but I can get into them as much as Dex and SFU. I can't stand Weeds for it's glorifying drugs, Californication I simply can't get into, (and I know I'm going to get flak for this) but even The Sopranos I can't get into. But it's strange I watched the first two episodes of True Blood w

Alan Ball worked extensively in theater before he moved to television and film. Chances are, several of his crew were acquaintences from stage. Alan Poul, I'm aware worked stage prior to television. Not all his writers on SFU are gay, however. Bruce Eric Kaplan is straight, as is Jill Solloway. Pretty confidant that all of them are progressives though.:-)

@lennaloooo Well, I have to so agree. My wife and I are Dexter nuts and Nurse Jackie and many others. Just recently we started SFU, and all other shows just faded. It even tops the mighty Dexter in some ways. So many other shows are so insignificant now. Kind of sad because so many other shows suck even more now. I'll just have to watch these again. Still love Dex, but everything changed after we watched SFU.

Sopranos is waaaaay overrated in my opinion. And it's creator is such an egotistical twit to boot. On top of it, he has no grasp on the fundamentals of concluding a narrative. David Chase had all the good will and capital to deliver a proper ending and squandered it all for the sake of stroking his massive ego. People will remember the Sopranos ending but for the wrong reasons. Alan Ball OTOH gave SFU the send-off of all send-offs. ;;THAT'S:: how you end a show.

Six Feet Under was better. More original. More beautifully crafted. More relatable. Just brilliant. Not to mention The Sopranos finale was one of the worst ever while Six Feet Under's finale was the best of any series. I loved The Sopranos but I don't think they're even in the same league. Oz was also better than The Sopranos
