Six Pack Abs or Backpack Abs? Core Training for Hikers, Trail Runners + Climbers

Everyone always want to know how to get six pack abs. But what about backpack abs?
The entire philosophy of "backpack abs" is centered around injury prevention. Rather than doing endless crunches in an effort to get those "chiseled abs", as hikers and trail runners our main goal with core training is to keep our bodies injury free despite everything we put them through.
In this video we're showing you our entire weekly core training routine for hikers and trail runners, and sharing our main philosophy that directs our core training routine.
DISCLAIMER: Of course, we are no experts, and we're definitely not certified physical therapists or trainers. This video is intended to show you our own core training routine and provide a little inspiration, and we are not recommending that anyone do this core workout themselves.

Thanks Carmen! The best thing we've found is that doing some of these super-hard challenges makes everything else in life (like all the little annoying or stressful things at work) seem like no problem at all by comparison. So not only do we feel happy when out on the trails, but that positivity really translates into everyday life as well! ❤️

I had a major L4-S1 injury a few years ago and have been through several rounds of PT to avoid surgery. It has drastically impacted my ability to get out and adventure. (Which is one of the reasons I love this channel so much!) I still do a good bit of hiking, but it causes me significant pain. Every time I have a relapse of my injury, it is because I have neglected my core. This seems really accessible for me and my busy schedule. Thank you for making this!!!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 жыл бұрын
Wow Laura, sorry to hear about the back injury. I totally relate to what you're going through. I had a terrible double disc rupture many years ago (L4-5, and L5-S1), and ultimately did need surgery. That was a terribly difficult two years, but it taught me a lot about how and why to strengthen core, and now you can see some of the positive results of that strengthening! So glad you are paying attention to your core, and I can really testify that these exercises (especially the inverted plank and "Superman" ones) have helped me drastically with my lower back. So glad you are loving the channel, and please let us know how you progress! --A

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
@@imdhananjay Yes, there are definitely a few things I can tell you I've avoided since my injury to those discs. The main thing is that I don't do heavy squats with weight on my back anymore. Instead, I do lots and lots of step-ups and other hi-rep exercises like that to strengthen legs. Of course, this means that my legs won't be quite as big and muscular as they once were, but that's a small price to pay for avoiding further compression of those discs! Also, I no longer play sports that require a lot of twisting or physical contact. No basketball or volleyball -- I've even given up tennis. It was hard to give up those sports, but it's given me so much more time to hike and climb that it's honestly been a good thing, and my back is definitely healthier for it!

Wow, just thought I'd see what videos you guys are killing it with, THIS IS GREAT! Adam's final challenge is a common rock climbing training move and then also doing it starfished, OUCH! Equal and opposite, so wise to emphasis. I really doubt this idea will be as popular as a video but it is HUGE for me when I'm out there going big and doing serious battle in potentially dangerous situations. Balance and efficiency by staying relaxed and fresh, and keeping that as a constant focus, all the time, on every trip for every step. Even simply not stepping into a depression on the trail, "like Adam's, I'd rather step on a baby, LOL, then loose altitude. Exactly that but on the micro and macro levels. . . it all adds up. Many times too, a bit of explosive energy can save lots more, Boulder hopping big gap is the perfect example, VS Boulder scrambling. . . . visualizing very efficient paths through extremely rough terrain and having the balance and confidence to execute those moves safely. Literally like a mountain goat, they have amazing movement even in the scariest places! The final and most epic, when climbing hard in very technical situations, not just having balance but also utilizing mechanical efficiency and leverage, using your skeleton to take micro rest constantly and efficiently surging with your muscles from one rest the the next instead of continuously keeping your muscles engaged and working = tired FAST. It is a tough skill to practice when you are in the gnar. . . finally, with master level rock climbing, unless you're literally a pro climber, you will not have the strength/endurance, usually grip strength, to make it all the way. No way. . . but finding rest positions will make that same situation feel much easier! Finding a balanced position or locking an appendage into a rock feature, all kinds of ways to do it, lets you regain all your strength and basically start anew unless you were seriously fried (Biggest Mistake, usually caused by fear). . . If I can find a rest on most 5.11-12 routes, I'm going to make it happily but. . . What really matters for us is simply knowing and using the rest strategy when needed, you're fighting hard on steep class 4, STAY FRESH, "rested" allowing every move to feel easy thereby minimizing fear as well. Relax, find rest positions, taking you time to keep feeling fresh. That ends up allowing you to move more wisely, accurately and ultimately more efficiently and faster over the whole day, maintaining your glycogen supply is what you're really doing, sub VO2max operation, you know. . . . . . reducing lactic acid buildup as well. . . . Wow that got way longer than anticipated but, I hope it helps. As I age I have more than held my ground with these "Jedi" strategies! Use exactly as much energy as it needs to take, not a bit more. . . stay relaxed, sharp and fresh. You guy are hopping like bunnies at the start of most videos and flowing along the trail much more efficiently at the finishes. . . yea, I wish I could hop like a bunny. . . but, I'd never do it on a big route. Cheers. . . where you next video? One time this efficiency definitely does not apply, route finding and safety. I have saved miles hiking the wrong way up to a rise to find the best easiest way or around some treacherous terrain to be safe and ALWAYS ended up moving faster. I used to climb through it. . . oops. . .
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually a great idea for a training video at some point -- avoiding lactic acid buildup, avoiding bonking, etc, by strategic rest. As they say in sniper training, slow is smooth, and smooth is fast! We've got a Joshua Tree adventure coming up next -- nothing big, but a nice little nugget!

Neither of us has had any knee issues yet so we haven't learned too much about knee strengthening other than just hiking a lot and doing our regular leg exercises. One thing that Adam really likes to do is wall-sits, where he puts his back against the wall and squats down to parallel and just holds it there as long as he can. He thinks this really helps him with descending. Not sure if it's specific to the knees, but he swears by it. ❤️

This was my primary mistake earlier in life: too much high impact core and strength training that wore out some of my joints, including my back :( I could have used this video 30 years ago, lol. The crunch was the go-to ab exercise then, and it had significant neagative impact over the years on my 6'10" frame.

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Sandra!! All of the reverse plank stuff can be done with a sore arm no problem, and depending where you're sore you could maybe also do the front plank down lower, with forearms on the ground rather than palms, if that helps. Or it that doesn't work, just skip the front plank and do extra of the chopsticks-type ones lying on your back!❤️

Hi Adam and Elise! Freshly back from watching the Leadville Pack Burro race, then my dog and I climbed 2 14ers, Mt Massive and Mt Elbert. There is a thing called the Nolan 14. It is 14 14ers, between 90 and 100 miles, done in 60 hours in the Sawatch Range (west of the highway that goes from Leadville to Buena Vista to Poncha Springs). Since my running days are over, I would never even come close to the standard. But….maybe something like 150 hours is realistic for a Joe Schmo. So, over the next year or so, I will return and recon routes. Of course, this is done through the night….and is off trail at times, so you need to be comfortable with those conditions. Thank you very much for sharing these strength work outs. I will give those a try, especially since I have a really bad back from army stuff. Truth in lending, for my whole life, when it was time to go for a run, I would just start running outside of my house or place of work with zero stretching. I am quite sure I could really use a back to basics strengthening regimen. Have an awesome weekend!

Alan that is so fantastic! How was Mt. Massive? We recently climbed Elbert via the Black Cloud Trail and really enjoyed it (except for the hail storm on the way down!). Which route did you do on Elbert? Nolan 14 sounds absolutely insane -- and so, so cool. Let us know about the recon and meanwhile, really hope you do these exercises if you have a bad back. Adam had back surgery some years ago, and these lower back exercises have truly been a lifesaver for him.

@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thank you very much!! uhhhhh...it all sucked hehehehe I started it in the spirit of the official movement; at the Leadville Fish Hatchery. So, that was a 4k climb. The Highline trail was the primary initial movement. Once you get to somewhere between 115 and 118, it is basically off trail, just going up a ridge the rest of the way. Once crossing Massive, you run the ridge south for a bit, then a 2k ft drop in a scree slope into the basin that leads you to the North Half Moon trail...and take that down to the North Half Moon Trailhead...and head down Halfmoon Rd a short bit and turn south on Cty rd 110J. If you drew a line from the Elbert peak to the North West to the French mountain peak, there is a gulch on the NW side of the Elbert peak that would be just on top of that line. Scramble time......and it really sucked. 3kft in a mile. That is beyond any pitch that I've stayed on for that much elevation gain. To get off of Elbert, I did follow your same trail until there is an intersection of 2 ridgelines; your's broke to the southeast, I went southwest to Bull Hill. Bushwack still south down to the Golden Fleece Mine. In that vicinity, there is a trail that gets you down by Echo Creek, and puts you out on Hwy 82, the Independence Pass highway to Aspen. It's a little bit crazy....You'd go west on Hwy 82 for like 2.5 miles to the La Plata Trailhead; then up to the La Plata Peak. It was soooo smoky that day. I coughed a lot of the day. On the mountain tops, you were still in the smoke layers; so no views :-( I wasn't planning to do that movement that day; it was a last minute decision after I saw the start of the burro race [ read: don't start 2 14ers at 11:30am!]. Fortunately, the monsoon rains have subsided for now, so there was no afternoon showers as their should have been. My poor black long hair shepherd....he was a panting mofo too. He drinks about .5 liters every 45 minutes. So....fortunately, I could resupply his water on in the Halfmoon Creek on the south side of Massive. For day hikes, there are definitely better ways to do these 14ers. But, the limitation here is your route selection has to set you up for the next peak. Have a great night!!

I started at 52. Real mountains. With bad knees. Plan your life around outdoor activities. Enjoy it. Yes you can walk 30 miles a day in snow carrying a pack. Don't. Do the day hikes. DO THE DAY HIKES. Add to them. Start with half day. Then full. Then weekend. Don't buy anything but shoes gas and food initially.

So glad you're going to use some of these! Our core workouts differ. Adam usually does pretty much the workout you saw in the video, and it takes him about 10-12 minutes. Elise is more hardcore than Adam, and often does 20-30 minutes of core including lots of hip stability work. As for our running distance, it really depends. We've been doing so many long sufferfest hikes lately that we're not running much separately, because we need the time between sufferfests to recover. However, in the winter season when we're not hiking as much or as long, we will generally run 10-20 miles a week. Adam prefers up-hill trail runs for training (he will sometimes run up 4-5 miles and then walk down) while Elise often does longer, flatter training runs.

Great video! I am planning some through hiking in a couple of months. I am worried about having a 20 lbs. pack on my back for 20-30 miles a day. Are there other exercises you'd suggest for carrying heavy loads over long distances?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, Steve! You probably already know that you need to train with heavy pack before you start the through hike, or you'll be miserable on the hike. Take a pack heavier than the one you'll be using and do a 5-10 mile hike with it at least 3 or 4 times before you go. Other than that, Adam swears by doing deadlifts with a hex bar -- he'll do multiple sets of 20 with pretty heavy weight (like 225 lbs). He feels like that gets him in shape for any tough uphills with weight. Let us know how the hike goes! ❤️

Wow thanks so much -- super psyched that you tried all the exercises! Trying to think of what training older folks can do. I did most of those hikes on bone on bone knee. Some meniscus left. So yes you can until replacements. Basically just hiking with a pack 15 to 30 pounds overweight. CONSISTENTLY. OBVIOUSLY DIET AND 10 PERCENT OR LESS BODYFAT IS BEST BUT IF 40 pounds overweight you can still do it based on consistency. Shadow boxing will get your heart rate to over 100. Try thrill of fight oculus for 5 rounds. Running is king. Period. don't want to hear swimming or skiing. 7 minute miles 7 miles over 1000 calories burned. Bam. Done. 49 minutes. BUT most ain't doing that. SO CONSISTENCY IS IT. WALKING TAKES TIME. BUILD IT INTO YOUR DAY. MAKE OUTDOORS your recreational activity. Abs won't take you vertical. Pull-ups. Dips. Jump rope. Jumping. Stair climber. Tougher for women. Your legs are your BFF. 😆 YOUR LEGS ARE YOUR BFF. OVER 48!!! ZERO mountains until over age 48 here. Hiking over terrain can do it for you! DAY HIKE TO ALL DAY HIKE TO HIKING MULTIPLE DAY HIKES TO 2 DAY TRIPS. THE ADDED EQUIPMENT WEIGHT WILL CONDITION YOU. ADD THEIR EXERCISES HERE TO THE ROUTINE as enhanced training. Lastly losing weight is biggest help. 161 pounds age 39 when I left 101st Airborne. Age 39. From walking, I went in at 178 pounds with a 360 pound bench press and 10 minute 2 mile run. 120 sit ups in 2 minutes.
