There's just something so satisfying about working to find a street spot, and then actually landing a trick on it. Especially when you feel like you're the only person who's ever skated it.

Or of maybe how many others maybe thought of it. It's not a designated skate spot and in life anything can happen and it could also be nice to think maybe others thought it was a good spot

I like both! As someone who skates for 26 years with breaks i went through different times on my skateboard journey. When i was young (15-25) we mostly skated street because we didnt have any park in our city. We build the obstacles on our own and were constantly searching for street spots everywhere. I stopped skating 6 years ago and restarted 3 years ago. My goal was to reach a good level where i can enjoy skateboarding and have many possibilities. This goal i reached through skating in skateparks. A few months ago i got bored from them and was longing for the unlimited possibilities in the streets and started to skate there again. Its such a great experience to film in the streets and be creative with a non perfect environment. Thats whats skateboarding is all about for me. I want to film a small street part this year and have many tricks in my mind. Hopefully my friends who mostly skate in the parks will join me to surf in the streets. 🔥🙏🤙

Hey John, I got an inside tip that they are going to try to add money into the budget in a few months to upgrade the crappy park in White Settlement. I'll let you know if it ever gets a renovation.

I think mostly on the utilitarian transportation aspect of skating. We kids in the 70’s and 80’s used bmx bikes. You know; kids legitimately have stuff to do and places to go the same as adults, but we weren’t allowed to drive. Some of us choose the board over the bike. Skateboarding was about getting from point A to B. We learned how to slappy; boardslide, cess slide, boneless; ollie and stuff like that in order to not have to stop and pick the board up and walk. I feel that if you can’t skate a mile down a busy street; hitting all the obstacles, not hitting any people or cars and make a good line out of it; then you really can’t skate. Even if you can fly out the bowl and do tre flips all day in a skatepark. I have still not seen a proper staircase/handrail in a park. I’ve only seen two parks with a parking block. No parks have a sidealk with a painted curb; so that sucks. I only like parks that have vert; halfpipes and pools.

Skatepark: easy progression, and more welcoming environment Street spots: you're there to get a sick trick or were just out and about and stumbled upon it, harder and more punishing environment, but more creativity

I grew up with the closest skatepark about two hours by train away. Now I live in a huge city with plenty of skateparks. I still prefer skatespots. There is something I can't explain about adapting to a certain environment, figuring out how to make the most of the terrain. Satisfying. Grinding a ledge at a skatepark is... expected.

A bit of both but I resent seen a video of Vincent Alvarez talk about why he don’t skate parks because, once you go to a different park you’re are unfamiliar with you end up skateboarding outside of your comfort zone and I agreement that.

I like skating wide open places and going places so street but the major draw back is low vibing haters who target and attack you for no reason. Skateparks you only have to watch out for other skaters but it's kind of boring going around in circles and everywhere is another obstacle.

Street skating is only fun if you're already pretty great at skating. As someone who can only do some basic flip tricks and simple grinds, street skating is really boring because pretty much all street spots are too hard for me.

The whole 'is skateboarding a sports?' video from Red Bull was so dumb though. They weren't really arguing about it being a sport, but arguing about it being 'not always a real competition'. Skateboarding through the physical activities itself is very clearly a sports, just like cycling and swimming and running or parcours would be. The competitive element for something to be a sports is actual optional. And skateboarding competitions do exist. Same goes for calling skateboarding a lifestyle. Not all skaters are like that. Heck most skaters probably don't even identify with core skaters at all, but just enjoy the sport. And a beginner skater that is still practicing tre flips really just won't have the same creative expression within the tricks he's doing, after all he's just practicing learning a new trick. I dare say most of skating will be that, and only maybe 1% will be artistic expression that ends up in a video. Not saying that on a personal level people can't be very creative, but it's still _always_ a sport and _sometimes_ art. Not the other way around.

Imagine skating in the 70's or 80's without skateparks or half pipes and learning tricks from pictures or later from videotapes in slow motion. No internet tutorials and the only skateparks are the ones you and your friends DIY after pics on magazines like Transworld or Thrasher.

Defining sports is weird no matter what. Take a small bouncy ball, chase it around, then throw it into a cup. It’s essentially the same activity as basketball, but basketball uses a bigger ball and a court, therefore it’s a sport. You can get paid to do it, yet you’re just chasing a bouncy ball around and throwing it into a cup.

Skateboarding is an action sport. I don't see why this is even a conversation. At the very least, it's an athletic pursuit. The culture is nowhere near traditional sports, but I don't think anyone really puts them in the same boat anyways.
@progressdaily100
@progressdaily100 Жыл бұрын
It’s a conversation because a lot of people, like you, define sports subjectively while others describe it objectively. By objective definition (dictionary) it is and isn’t a sport, but by your individualistic subjective definition it is an action sport. So a lot of people have opposing subjective definitions, which is why conversations happen
@NISHIAKI

@@progressdaily100 By most definitions I was able to find (Britannica, Wikipedia, Cambridge dictionary, Merriam Webster), skateboarding, even outside of competitions, would very undebatably fall within the classification of Sport.

I grew up in the 90s on the street skating. I personally think any kinda grind or slide done on a groomed ledge in a skatepark is cheating lol Y'all basically riding on the edge and calling in grinding. Try doing that shit on a ungroomed sidewalk curb!
