TaleOfTwoSmittys - TOTS the Bus
This week we install our skoolie shore power inlet. It will allow for 30 amp service, although the system is designed to allow for a 50 amp upgrade later on, and it connects to our Victron Multiplus 3000va inverter charger. We show the electrical problems I encountered last week and the rest of the connections between the Victron Energy inverter, the WFCO distribution panel, and the Victron lynx distributor. Our bus conversion is coming along nicely, and the skoolie electrical system is nearly complete. Every skoolie build has a different skoolie electrical system. We will [eventually] have six 100-amp hour batteries and four 300 watt solar panels. Things are looking up!

The exposed wires can be a problem cut them shorter or insulate them.

Maybe I'm missing something, did you install your shore power on the passenger side midway of the bus? All the campgrounds have power for the drivers rear of the unit. I would move it rather than digging out an extension cord every time. For the wires that wouldn't go in with heat shrink because it was to tight, mark it while still connected to know where the wires spread for terminating, pull it back out, heat shrink to your mark. Take the nut off of the hole for the wire and slide it over the heat shrink, if its to small you're using to heavy of awg. but that okay. If it's to small to go over the wire drill it out. Under the nut, on the terminal, there should be some tiny little plastic fingers and a rubber grommet inside of those. stretch them out with a sharpie or pencil or something sized appropriately. If you had to drill the nut you may have to drill this too, the grommet should stretch, you can slide it on the wire just beyond your mark, just where theres a bit of heat shrink showing. Use the sharpie to spread the fingers and slide the wire in. Terminate the individual wires then slide the nut up and thread onto the compression fitting. BTW, you don't need crimp ferrels on solid strand wire, its used on stranded wire so they won't splay or get cut through from the compression of the terminal.

Hey I’m an electrician by trade and you wanted to know about the ends on your feed makeup, I’d cut them down just a little more. It’s good to have a little wire showing but not that much. You want jut a little wire showing because you never want to have insulation of the wire inside the actual makeup

Since you have to disconnect the wires to slip the screw cap on, couldn't you shrink wrap them only on the inside there? Then they'd be covered. Idk if its dangerous to have them not covered or not.

Yeah the wires going into that inverter you can't have anything exposed you're using the wrong tool to crimp the ferrules you need a crimping tool for ferrules but if I were you I would just tin the end of them, also the AC power in you don't have to put Farrell's on that since you using solid wire

Oh and on your shore plug, I would tape the back of the plug so screws are not exposed. You only do this when you put plugs into metal boxes or in this case near metal. Since your bus is metal it would be much safer to tape it all up for extra safety measures.

have you experienced any issues with your plug being female? I got the same one and installed it, but I've seen people try to use "suicide cables" and I would prefer to not use that lol

Good question. The proper install is to always have a female end where the power is coming from (like a wall socket). So, since the bus is “plugging into” the shore power, the bus has to have a male end, so that you can use a power cable with one male, one female end. If by “suicide cables” you mean both ends male, do not do that. Very dangerous. If the cable was plugged into power, the other end is live and could kill you.
