Sometimes it's a bummer to see that professional producers really don't have some secret plug-in chain or anything and that the ultimate reason my production isnt as good as theirs is because I need to spend more time understanding production and less time thinking about what plug ins I need

i would assume that the flattened sounds had A LOT of processing before with probably third party plugins . The project he shows here is probably a V5 file where lightly mixes stuff not arrangement and sound design (judging from the tons of pro q 3 dynamic EQs and no compression etc)

I'd be really interested in hearing what you think about Justice's early production and techniques, have you ever tried to achieve that sound? Haven't really heard anyone get that Cross sound and I think it'd be a sick video, attempting to cover the basis of a decent old Ed Banger style mix with today's software. (and yeah, I've seen all your French House videos, quite old but fantastic!) Love your content, cheers!

For anyone that's reading this looking for an answer as well, I've found all the secrets since I made that comment. In summary, the secret sauce is the master channel. The easiest to mimic is SebastiAn, because his technique is minimalist and doesn't do much sound design. If you want to do Justice, it requires a shit ton of skill pulling off the correct vibe. As a quick and undetailed example for Seb, raise highs, then overdrive slightly and multiband, then saturate very precisely and widen with more multiband, then a heavy compressor at the end.

Worth mentioning on the Dynamic EQ on the Pro-Q3 he did; It's set to linear phase medium-'mode' and also you can see the decibels to the right, so it's probably a -10 to -15db gain reduction, which is probably a decent number since the whole mix is pretty squashidy-squashed.

I believe some of those vocals are mp3 while others are wav is due to his ableton settings somehow creating a compressed audio file whenever he cuts a section of audio and then consolidates it. Either that, or whatever the program he has assigned in Ableton for editing clips does the same (saves as a more compressed format, such as mp3 in this case.)

You mentioned at 15:27 skrillex uses a Limiter on his drum buss to give it that nice crunchy sound. I mainly wanted to know does Ableton handle PDC flawlessly? I'm really deciding to make the switch soon!

TheBlashMusic honestly same, I think you’re right but I’ve seen other producers use what you’re referring to intentionally, check out current value’s masterclass. He uses the crossover points in eq3 intentionally to create artifacting in some of his sounds, he says it tightens them up if you set the crossovers at the right frequencies, which makes sense if you think about it from the perspective of a weird notch filter or something. I think multiband would do the same thing/uses the same engine?

Well, I found out today that me and skrillex actually share a lot of the same mixing “techniques” which is super surprising actually. I’ve never really been one to overproduce so to say, I like to keep things simple and not super flashy mainly because it works for me personally and it’s simply just a part of my workflow. I feel like going into too much detail and precision just adds stress and times when I have done that I end up leaving the track because I’m trying to make it too perfect. This is awesome and I hope sonny makes more videos like this and maybe goes into a little more detail.
