Ok so in this day and age, we see a lot of bubba'd SKS rifles. The SKS is a platform that isn't easy to modify yet so many aftermarket parts are made available to sporterize the SKS. Customization of firearms and weapons have been popular for many centuries. Some folks find it fun and enjoyable to tinker with them. It’s really just become a part of our human history now. Well, in this video we take a dive into why the SKS is such popular Bubba gun!

I bought and modded a $100 Chinese sks back in the 80s. To me an SKS is like a 10/22. Not collectible and begging to be modded up. Still have that SKS. Still a fine rifle.

I love the SKS, every iteration. I've owned several since the mid 90s, and I've kept at least one as a deer rifle just as long. I would never ever make a permanent modification to one. That said, for every SKS I have owned, I've bought an aftermarket stock with a pistol grip. I like the ergonomic upgrade, and it makes no actual changes to the weapon. I keep the original stocks in a plastic bag, I keep original mags in bags as well. The Badace rail mount is the only option I would ever accept for optics on one of my rifles, and I've personally found it to be practical and reliable. I'm also a fan of the cheesegrater handguard look, and I really dig the Archangel magazines. The extended release is quite convenient. I'm not a fan of any other aftermarket mags, in all honesty. The steel mags look cool, but ffs they are inconsistent. I would rather just keep the fixed mag and use stripper clips. The only true bubbed out piece of anything I have is a spare bolt carrier group I was given for free (it runs smoothly, very little usage, friend was unbubbing a rifle and called it trash. the fool!) that someone ground the bottom ledges off so it could drop and load mags with the bolt closed. I don't use it, it's just a novelty to have around. As for stocks, I prefer the ATI Strikeforce, though I modify mine so the Dust cover can be removed more easily, and I drill the grips so I can pop the detent behind the trigger without removing it.

That’s awesome! Yes I have heard that the aftermarket parts for these rifles can be hit or miss. I would have kept that bolt too, one mans trash is another mans treasure.
@welcometocattown2036
@welcometocattown2036 2 жыл бұрын
@@BattlefieldCurator Hit or miss is absolutely correct. I've went through every polymer stock, and they have been almost entirely disappointing. The only aftermarket kit I've not tried is one of those Matador Aluminum stocks; but my goodness that's gotta be some weight. Truly that bolt is a treasure. If my bubba were all that I could grab (oh i hope not hahaha) on my way out the door in a SHTF situation, I'd be grabbing that bolt as well.

I have two SKS rifles and I've never thought to "sporterize" them LOL... I prefer these rifles in particular in the original configuration. My advice to anyone wanting to turn it into an AK or something is: 1) consider buying an AK...? 2) consider the "paratrooper" sks. I got mine cheap, and it has a 16" barrel already.. VERY handy but still 100% SKS; pictures don't do justice, they really are handy little rifles with that 4" chopped off. The paratrooper ones aren't exactly collectable, but probably will be more collectable than a sporterized one.

I've bought several Mausers that were sporterized and put them back to original. I find the biggest abuse of military surplus is neglect of the bore after shooting corrosive ammo. That flat ruins a barrel.

Great vid as always. Personally I don’t see the point of modifying an SKS, especially these days. Maybe back when Chinese ones were $60 and Russian ones were $90, it would’ve been cheap to make something into a modern sporting rifle... especially since many (though far from all) of the Chinese guns were commercially made for the US market and not really of military/historic interest anyways. It almost would’ve been no different than modifying a Glock today. Today though it’s a different story, one would be lucky to score any original SKS in decent shape (military or commercial) for under $400, so by the time one throws on a plastic stock, duckbill mag, muzzle brake, scope rail, they’re very likely out more money than just buying an AR-15. Plus they’re left with something functionally inferior to an AR in most respects since the scope rail won’t hold zero and duckbill mags are notoriously finicky.

When I bought my grab bag type 56 i got unlucky and had a non parts matching disaster. The stock was cracked down the middle right behind the grip of the stock after further investigation I noticed the recoil bar was a whole inch away from where it should be causing the recoil to crack the stock. I bought an custom wood stock and stained it black because thats what I wanted. Same shape and all. I also added a picattny mod that replaces the leaf spring sight but is fully reversible. It still allows use of stripper clips and i have no interest in changing it. I enjoy the stripper clip loading for the fun of it. Everything I did is completly reversible and alls I would need to do is buy a replacement stock. Mine had no collectable value so I made it for me. If it was parts matching and usable when I purchased it I wouldn't have done anything to it. But as it stands Im happy with my rifle.

Got the duckbill magazines and added a a sling and rail. Nothing permanent, and I kept all the hardware. I traded it for a Marlin Camp 45 carbine. Today, I only hack up cheap shotguns. IMO, the lack of rifling on shotguns make them more fun for customization. I recently sawed off (legally) a H&R Pardner, crowned the barrel, ceramic-coated the metal parts in OD green, and swapped the stock for a pistol grip. Folks thought it was cool to see a short barrel shotgun with vented ribs. I bought it used, and selling it for $250 still made a a little profit.

I agree if you want to do a chassis swap go ahead. I have a sks that takes duckbill mags but still have the 10rd attached mag if I ever want to put it back on it. The gun community takes in everyone that wants to shoot. No matter what you want to use to do that. Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet are at gun ranges. I've never heard anyone be shamed if they have a different stock on their sks or any other rifle. No need for elitism. You could almost make the same case about AR'S being bubba up with all the so called "tactical" attachments on them making them look silly in my opinion. So at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

I'll never understand people's obsession with keeping SKSs original so they can recoup a couple hundred bucks in 10-20 years. Have you ever been to a gun store that didn't have an SKS in it? When SKSs were $75, AKs and ARs were $350. Now a decent AR is $1500 and SKSs are $500. IMO, you should either spend the $2k for a really nice AR or just optimize an SKS. The build quality on pretty much every SKS is vastly superior to PSA, Keltec, diamondback, etc. At least you know what you are getting with the SKS. It's the same reason I wouldn't carry a PSA dagger over a G19. If you shoot 1000 different G19s and 1000 different PSA daggers, you will inherently have more issues with the daggers despite how awesome the internet will tell you they are. I'd rather have 10 rounds in a G19 than 15 in a dagger because if it doesn't work, it doesn't matter.

I've had many SKS carbines over the years. I don't really consider a garden variety milsurp SKS a "collectable" or a high-value "historical" piece, since they are not at all rare. They are carbines designed for intermediate combat use. As such, I see nothing wrong with modifications that tend to "update" them, such as modifying them to accept detachable magazines, changing the stock to a lighter, weather-resistant stock, or modifying the bolt to eliminate the requirement of keeping the bolt open to insert/remove the magazine, all of which I have done to my own SKS's without affecting reliability or safety. But then again, I have no intent to sell them, so I'm not concerned about them losing any value. I consider these mods to be an update as opposed to "bubba-rizing". But, just my opinion. P.S.....I do have a numbers matching Tula 1951, and I will NOT modify that one. Great video anyway, brother, I look forward to watching more 👍.

I Agree. I have a '50 Tula and a late '57 Norinko type 56. They are both collectible and I would never change them. But it also have 2 '70s type 56s that I found Bubba'd and kept them that way. One, I went full-blown Bubba on, with the bolt conversion, Tapco mags, shortened barrel 4", installed blade bayonet, rapid-release magazine catch and Magwedge scope rail. It still has the wood stock, but I've opened up the magazine opening for easier loading. It's a lighter, shorter, more useful weapon than Simonov ever imagined. And the scope helps my old eyes see what I'm aiming at.

I bought a 1967 SKS MODEL 56. I kept it original. The rifle has all matching numbers, however I purchased professional camouflage paint and I painted. It looks great!!

@@BattlefieldCurator I definable agree it's best to keep it not permanently change, which is my plan, I have all matching parts but it's got some rust and the stock has very little original finish left, still looks good.

@@BattlefieldCurator yup got mine from buds, I can barely see the factory code because it’s pitted over it. I cleaned it up and it’s completely functional and the bore is beautiful so I ain’t complaining.

Here's the thing folks , 1st , if someone says sks rifles are not collectible they are clueless 2nd not all sks rifles are collectable, so get off the soap box 3rd. Will miss matched sks rifles accrue in value over time? Very little and I base this off of k98 history , matching k98 rifles are worth bucks , and mismatched have marked time with inflation at best so doing something to a shooter mis matched sks is not a sin , if you choose not then don't, but don't go around breaking balls because you don't agree , some of us have than a couple

I mean in the 10+ years of you owning the rifle, does the resale value really matter? Does getting $1200 vs $600 in 10+ years really make a difference? If so, just put $100 into the SP500 before you bubba it and you'll make more than keeping it in factory config. Super rare examples or war bring backs I totally get, but I'll never cringe at someone optimizing a Chinese SKS instead of buying some cheap Keltec or PSA. Duckbill mags are a BIG no, but a modernized stock and a reliable rail system/red dot drastically improves the platform. It's the same reason I would rather carry a quality revolver over a cheap semiautomatic. I'm taking a SW revolver over a PSA dagger every single time despite the obvious advantages semi auto's have.
