Dang I am glad I still have this game! The price for a complete copy has nearly doubled what it was when this video came out.

You know, I wished that Doug Tennapel got this license back from EA Games (or Dreamworks somewhat) and released both the Neverhood and Skullmonkeys in HD format since it would feel home on both PC and PS1 :)

Wow! I had Skullmonkeys when I was young, but I had no idea it was a sequel at all. You learn something new every day.

Best bonus room song EVER.

The only bonus room song that comes close to being that awesome is: "It's a Secret" by BattleBlock Theatre!

What about the donkey kong country bonus room? That song is dope!

Just yesterday I found this game sitting in a display case at my local comic store for 50 bucks. In prime condition. You're goddamn right I bought it.

I used to watch my mom play Skull Monkeys when I was a kid (I was 5 when it came out, so Teen rated games weren't appropriate for me, but I could still watch her play it.) I remember SkullMonkeys, OddWorld and Medievil the most.

Ahh medieval. I never owned it but had one of those sample discs with that on it and played it all the time. As well as legacy of kain: reaver of souls

Those were my 3 favorite games, funny cuz I was also 5 years old.. but they were totally appropriate for me, the ratings are only reccomendations, maybe your parents just wanted to hog all the gameplay

Lol its scary to see what the world is turning into with censorship rampant, the most perverted people are like that because they had the real world censored from them so long that they dont know how to act when it's time to leave the censorship nest of parents

Just happened to be thinking about this game and your vid came up in the results. I remember buying this when it came out for my little bro. The music and animation was always enough to keep us entertained. I think we played the disc to death.

Skullmonkeys has been my all-time favorite PS1 game since I played it in 98 or 99. And the Neverhood is my all-time favorite PC game since I played it in 2000. Such great games, such great memories. And that music. OH that music.

good work man! admittedly, this is the first time i've seen some kind of review about this game. And you do an admirable job.
@heartoftoledo15602 жыл бұрын
Never beat this game. It was crazy hard in some ways. Music was great and quirky things like "Joe Head Joe" and the 1970's boards made it worth the time to play. Thanks for the review.

Dude, I'm not used to watch game reviews, I prefer in a podcast media, but seriously, you've made an incredible job. I'm captivated by you, mainly because you talk so awesomely about a game (and I'm referring to Skullmonkeys here, but I also adore The Neverhood) that means a loooot to me. Sir, you just won the internet (for me). I'm gonna watch your videos from now! (And the Skullmonkeys soundtrack it's... ahhh!

Really loved the editing on this video. You showed off so much of the game, which looks so pretty, and even tied it to what you were saying. That may seem obvious, but it's odd that in so many reviews they'll show irrelevant stuff while talking about something cool that should be showing. I dunno if I'll ever play through this game, so I'm happy this review shows it off pretty extensively, at least for someone who's never played it.

Saw and played this game in an awesome game shop near where I live, and I gotta say I didn't know what to think of it. It was so, so weird, but I liked it. I got vibes from that game that I never got from any other game, and I'm now considering getting it. Also, it has a really pretty looking gold stamp/sticker on the cover which says "Steinbach, MB (Manitoba)" which is big town near where I'm from in Canada.

Evil Engine #9's VERY last section remains the bane of my existence, as are all the YNT levels. Everything else is solid platforming goodness. I loved Skullmonkeys back when I first rented it 14 years ago and I still do to this day. I didn't grow up playing Adventure games, thus I didn't play Neverhood back then. I tried playing a bit of it 3 years ago but I couldn't get into it for some reason.

probably my favorite part of this game was entering random level passwords till i hit upon random save points with random items. in fact, there is an entire easter-egg world 0 (before world 1) you can only visit by entering random passwords till you hit upon it, called skullmonkey gate. there may even be other easter-egg worlds but i don't quite remember since it was roughly 20 years ago :/

I remember knowing of The Neverhood from Cinematech on G4 in the day. They played gameplay over the bonus room theme. Was a very unique looking game and I found it cool as a kid. Oh and it is a bit interesting surreal western humor does have good appeal in Japan, though it could be said the same vice versa. Fantastic Review I must say.

Really pissed at my dad...when we moved home from spain (we only lived in spain for like a year) my parents got a divorce...but he also sold all of our PS1 Games, and amongst those games, was the Real physical non burnt disc of Skullmonkey in excelent condition (we were very careful with our games as kids)...even if i no longer have the PS1 (my mom managed to break it, thanks mom!...) i would've still wanted to have it around, just because.

Think I've had my fill of frustratingly difficult PS1 platformers after the first Crash Bandicoot, so it'll probably be a while before I get around to trying to beat this one myself :P Fun review as always though ;)

Despite my usual boycott against future movies based on games due to their reputation, I might be on board for a Neverhood movie. They just need to follow these simple steps. 1. ACTUALLY STAY FAITHFUL TO THE GAMES!. 2. Get the original creators to work on the film rather than some careless hacks. 3. Have Terry S Taylor do the soundtrack. 4. There are two options for the visuals. Either use the traditional clay stop-motion or go the route of The Lego Movie and use CG resembling clay stop-motion.

I know of one other PC game that got a console-only sequel - Drakan. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakan:_Order_of_the_Flame en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakan:_The_Ancients%27_Gates At least it stayed in the same genre.

Skullmonkeys is not a game "almost everyone has heard of and played." Not in a long shot. It might have more recognition among Playstation players, but on the other hand there are PC adventure gamers that may know about The Neverhood, but not Skullmonkeys. The Neverhood is actually usually the higher regarded game. It doesn't help that the recent Armikrog kickstarter is a spiritual successor focused on the PC game and not a console platformer. Even Okamiden, which is the least obscure sequel I've done so far, isn't something "everyone" has played/heard. Keep in mind that cult status never equals common gaming knowledge and even if more people heard/played Skullmonkeys more than The Neverhood, they may not even know it was a sequel to begin with. Besides, the the show also focuses on whatever changes sequels made and Skullmonkeys was chosen due to those changes from the Neverhood.
