Skullz reacts to Jambi by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Wings for Marie and Wings for Marie 2(10,000 days) played together are probably the most beautifully dedicated songs to his mom. And the lyrics really hit home and show the love he has for her with the acceptance to let her go with her passing. It's a personal song for me as it helped me to in the loss of my Mom in March of 2020, from Alzheimer's who was a Christian as well deep rooted in her faith, the compassion and comforting way he sings the songs helped with the acceptance that she is now in a better place and not suffering anymore. Forever grateful for this man's passion for the love of his mom and the honor he gave her.

@@Skullzrapper thanks bro, appreciate it, this band has been very therapeutic for me and will always be my favorite for that reason. And I agree with you I think Jambi is about his mom too, I know others may say different , and it's open to interpretation ( Maynard writes in a way just for that reason and they used to never put the lyrics in the cd's until their last album Fear Inoculum, Maynard wanted people to draw out their own meanings from the songs as a Tool (the reason why the band is called Tool) to help people in their lives to heal and overcome the struggles they deal with. ... Can't wait to hear your reaction to Wings for Marie pt 1&2 next week. You'll see what I mean by beautifully dedicated.

As a fan of yours I look forward to seeing your take on the next 2 songs, at the same time I don’t envy you, the emotional toll you’re about to pay will be high. Most of the song is in 9/8, and each member is playing with different emphasis on the beats. Adam plays beat groupings that feel like 4+5, while Danny plays 3+3+3 for example. Everything still adds up to 9 though. I think it’s intentionally disjointed, so that when they all switch to that head bobbing 6/8 in the bridge, the contrast makes it hit even harder.

According to Adam, this song was originally a riff brought in by Justin that Adam and Danny didn't initially take seriously. They called it "Jambi" because the time signature reminded them of Jambi the genie from Pee-Wee's Playhouse, "mecca lecca hi, mecca lecca hiney ho." They were open enough to give it a chance to grow, and here it is. The double entendre, as is so often the case with Maynard, is that Jambi is also a province of Indonesia, hence the whole, "Feast like a sultan I do.." and eastern themes.

I like the idea that the lyrics at the end are actually "benevolent son". Its his mom telling him to shine on to the world and make it a better place until we meet again in spirit. Imo, and from my experience, people who said that Tool got soft with this album are the ones who are incapable of growing with the band. They just like Maynard's anger and screaming from the first few albums. These fans will veer off and listen to simpler metal bands. Tool will keep getting heavier in their own way and become more and more talented in their musicianship.

To me this album is when Tool hit harder at progressive metal and where Danny, Justin and Adam really start indulging in interwoven rhythms and time signatures.. they really get off on playing time signatures that are different but but add up the same in the end of a measure.. for me Justin really shines on this album and I usually lock into what him and Danny do to find the rhythm and also Maynard.. I think the same can be said about Maynard is that he finds his space mostly with what the rhythm section is doing

Hey Skullz, I appreciate your interpretation that Jambi is about a specific person - a lover or Keenan's mum - I'd never really thought about it like that, but it's fitting. I've always felt 'you' in the first half as an undisclosed person, and then when he declares that 'you are my centre' it reveals that he's speaking with himself. That he was tempted by greed and ego to have all the king's rewards, but the benevolent sun (light, self reflection/realisation) exposed the dark side that existed within. It's not until the 'two become one', the now-exposed dark (hooker) with the light (matyr), an acceptance that the dark parts are also part of himself, that he can defeat dark and move forward, 'reflecting' that light unto others to 'breathe in union'

Revisiting this song and listening to it as a whole, it becomes quite clear to me, that 1. It is about Maynards relationship with his son, but mirrored in the relationship with his mother. All he has achieved, was achieved in the light that shone onto him by his mother, and as that light is still shining, he is realizing that he must be the shining light ("Shine on forever, shine on benevolent son") is basically the light of his mother shining onto him, and what the light tells him, is that he must shine onto his son. Which essentially lets him become the very same light for his son, by telling his son to keep shining. As such the two become one (Maynard + Judith), but at the same time, the two become one (Maynard and Son), while implying that the son too has the ability to forever become the same light - and in a way, already is the same light for Maynard the other way around. This probably becomes clearer after hearing Wings for Marie and 10.000 days. 2. In a sense, Maynards mother gave everything, and yet she still stayed in the world, still was herself. Her love was unconditional, as her faith (though Maynard disagreed with the latter). In Jambi Maynard sets up the pieces for this conversation (though it can be held on it's own) with the sentiment that he too could give up everything, and it was a price he would also be willing to pay. I don't want to get more into it prior to Wings for Marie, but it dawned on me as you (Skullz) ran through the lyrics that these songs are more interconnected than I had initially realised

The turn arounds are giving you trouble probably cause of the odd time signatures but thats not whats causing you to feel thrown off, its the syncopation between Adam and Dannys parts. If you think the adams playing sounds different in this track just wait till FI with descending haha, to me that song sums up tools entire career in one song but Jambi is probably the most underrated track on this album, this song is named after Jambi the genie from peewees play house, it’s a warning against choosing materialism over love and compassion and relationships hence, the lyric “I would wish it all the way if I thought tomorrow would take you away.” He’s saying he would give up everything his fame his money if he could just get his mother back for one more day, this whole album is a dedication to his mother who suffered for 10,000 days with paralysis before she died, which is why the two next songs should be played back to back to get the full experience, and also this song is a warning against the dark side and the evil within this world, wether people wanna believe it or not evil does exist and so does the metaphysical and even if you don’t wanna believe, just entertain it and realize if you had to pick good or evil which one would you choose, that’s basically this song, would you choose selling your soul for materialism or choose love and compassion in relationships 🌀

I can't help but wonder if it is because so much of the album is inspired by his feelings for his mother, or maybe as an introvert he'd just had enough of being the focal point of the band. I've heard that he said he found it harder to hear himself in the mic, and moved back to the side to preserve his vocals.

as an artist i understand this "center" as this "focus" artists have been using to get in the zone. it is fleeting. like the song. you think you got the rhythm but it changes. to me i would trade all the rewards for this focus. it would make sense because my focus can take me anywhere while the riches can only take me so far

I feel that man! Focus is salvation! Being scattered and divided is to be without a sense of goal or purpose. Love that interpretation 🤘

It just doesn't get better than you reacting chronologically. There's no other way to experience what long time fans have experienced over the years of PATIENTly waiting for new releases from the world's most significant band. Imagine waiting 13 years for Fear Inoculum. Speaking for myself, there was a LOT of anxiety and worry that perhaps the band wouldn't deliver another epic album. For those saying 10,000 days is soft, what a load. Thanks for letting us tag along on your journey brother. Great stuff.

“The devil and his had me down.” Meaning the devil as his fallen angels were trying to keep him down but turning to the light and good changed everything for him, it’s ironic that Maynard says this because before I discovered tool the devil also had me down I was so depressed and fighting a lot of inner demons and possibly on the urge of attempting suicide again but after hearing lateralus and taking a tab of acid I found a new reason to keep living and my life has been improving drastically ever since and this song really has always spoke to me, btw I truly feel after having heard this song that Maynard possibly refound his faith in a higher power hence “Shine on forever shine on BENEVOLENT SON.”

Pretty sure it's Benevolent "Sun". Maynard is playing with the Christian imagery of course, but if you watch his Easter video from last year, it's pretty clear if Maynard "worships" anything, it's the sun and the seasons.

Yes he’s using it as an allegory and I’ve always assumed Maynard is a pantheist as well but if you read the lyrics on the track wings part 2 he’s clearing accepting his mothers beliefs unlike on Judith where he was mad at her for it he’s definitely a believer in spirituality metaphysics and an afterlife I think we can all agree to that but he’s using the imagery through his lyrics to as a wish of good will towards his mother and also warn against the evils within our world and to go towards the light not the dark, there has never been an official lyric book for 10,000 days so it could be sun or son either way he’s saying he wants the good to shine down on humanity the two become one is the ego and the shadow becoming one known as the higher self there’s a lot of stuff that if you haven’t done the research and/or experienced these things would go right over your head

I don't think I can add anything that you're not already picking up. You are an intelligent, intuitive reactor that is quite skilled at picking up on the message, and seeing the potential of alternate meanings. It can be about oneself, a parent or close friend, a child, or a society or kingdom, or the state of Humanity as a whole. Loss can be felt at any scale, and the path through grief, to survival, to be tempted by the darkness, but to choose the light and once again thrive is similar each time. Shine On indeed.
