Sky is the brand new LED fixture from Neptune Systems, and I've been running three of them over my reef for the past three weeks. I'll discuss my initial fears, and talk about my overall impression. They are being revealed at RAP this weekend. Did you see them in person?

Hey Marc, I watched this video twice. I actually really enjoyed it and think its a good model for new products that are announced or about to be. Take the coral care light gen 2 for example, it was hard to find any good real world details or questions answered. Eventually there were a few unboxing videos or review articles written but where is the guy like you who is considering changing over to led. I know one guy where I am in Nova Scotia, and changing over to led was a huge concern and expense if you got it wrong for him. I am new to the hobby with only a year under my belt. I have T5 over my DT and a AP9X over each of my two frag tanks. For me choosing the light was not a real concern. It was looking at what I was trying to light (foot print 48x24x16) and then price point of the different options. My tanks were new and empty, so what ever information I could find was good but I didn't have anything to lose by a poor choice. Marc, I appreciate you and what you do for the reefing community, and wanted to pass along what my takeaway was from this video. I hope what I wrote makes sense.

Marc - I enjoy your videos/website content and contributions you've given to the hobby for free over the last couple decades. It would have been good to disclose any monetary benefit you received for providing this review, discount or other, just like any researcher would be expected to provide in the scientific community. And if you truly paid full retail price ($869.95) for the lights, even though they aren't for sale, then disclosure of that would certainly bolster the review. Especially since you said you were saving money in the video....
@Faithbleed
@Faithbleed 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, this feels a lot like a sponsored video. If he's stuck to metal halides for so many years because that's what he knows and trusts, why risk changing now to a brand new, unproven light? Would make a lot more sense to go with the industry gold standard, Radions which have had years of revisions to be perfected. This is virtually an infomercial for Neptune and that's all fine, but he should be upfront about it.

@@melevsreef The other commentator said you've got them fro free. if that was the case you already got a free car, right? ;) But that also changes the whole concept of this video and becomes a pure promotion from a sponsorship. I would say, with how well he cares for his tank and the passion he has for it, he wouldn't just put new lights up simply because they didn't cost him anything. If he already wanted to use these... it's good advertising to offer them to him for free because of Marc's audience. And with how expensive quality lights are, it's smart budgeting for Marc to accept something like that. I think at that point, it's not sponsorship, just smart business. Tit for Tat.

Marc I would like to know if you see any disco effect with these lights? Years ago I went from MH lights to Kessil because I liked the shimmer and I just cannot do the disco whatsoever. How strong is the shimmer with these lights? Finally do you think you have fully crossed over to LED with the Sky? I value your opinion since I know how difficult it was for you to make this change, even if it is temporary.

I'm very interested in seeing more info as the Sky nears release, this was great. As a non-Apex users, I expected that these would be Apex exclusive. But, I'm happy to hear they can also be run stand alone. I may have an Apex at some point, but likely not in the next few years. In fact I would love to have one. But it will likely be one of the last items I purchase. So being able to run the Sky without Apex, is huge. It means I can fully consider them as an option. I don't want a budget system, so I'm not building a budget system. Unfortunaly, my significant other didn't agree with that memo; so I am building it at a budget pace :)

I bought the Gro and my Cheato are growing like crazy and for now I can run the system w/o a skimmer (still getting 250gal tank set up). So this seems to be along the same line and I would buy it if I haven’t already a set of RedSea lights but if I replace them or need more light this is what I would buy. For the price the RedSea lights are good but their setup, problems with connectivity and limited color range make it less attractive.

I remember way back when switching from MH to LED, and this was generations of LEDs ago. It was most definitely a different look than I was used to, I wouldn't necessarily say "better" but definitely different. Over time it becomes the new normal though, and as long as it grows coral, great. I did have the opposite effect though with heater usage, being as I live in a cooler climate than Texas, not an A/C using region of the country, there most definitely was an uptick in heater power because the room never got to above about 65 degrees, so largely halides heated my tank during day time hours as well. That said I don't think I used more power on heaters than power I saved with LEDs, but it wasn't quite the energy savings as the literature put out, with a much longer "break even" period I'm sure. But if I was paying for electricity at the rates you've claimed, I don't think there ever would be a break even period 🤣 That said, my current LEDs do work fine, and I'm not a someone who needs to have the "latest and greatest" so replacing my already expensive fixture with another expensive fixture just isn't going to happen. Now if I needed to replace one anyways, then absolutely would try it. That said, that is the largest problem I found with LED lighting, is if you just wanted to try it out it is such a large expense to do so, where as with a MH or T5/VHO you pay $20-80 for a new bulb and that's the end of it you can see if that's the look you want. Now excuse me I gotta shoe some kids off my lawn, they're trying to steal my nickel's worth of candy! 🤣🤣🤣

@@melevsreef And do you think that does make any difference for the corals? Yes, of course it does! The amount of energy used to produce light needs to be there. It's not magical! Sorry to say this, but this couldn't have come off anymore like a infomercial even if you tried. Marc I respect you buddy, but this very much sounded like it was totally scripted. You most likely had this arranged well before you thought to make the change. Neptune was wise to target KZfaq influencers to give them these lights free as free advertising for them. Not a new thing, ETM Has done it many a time over the years. But this kinda takes away the unbiased review of a new product and unfortunately the sheep in this hobby will eat it up and go buy them. I'm not against new technology, and in this case a light fixture that's a little different than others. Is it better at growing coral than other fixtures that have been around for a long time, Probably not. Probably just as good, but then again cheap fixtures with the proper spectrum and intensity will grow as well too. This is a fact. All in all best of luck to Neptune and their new light.

LEDs should be compared to LEDs. Keep your halide fixtures just in case. LOL! Sanjay changed to Radions and the results aren't the same. Not sure he is 100% happy. @@melevsreef Hey Marc! Yes, I know. Problem is when you have a thriving reef under halides and your corals are vivid growing profusely and very colorful all those years and now you've got dull colors and weird colony formation. Example is that bright yellow Porites sp. Sanjay has that way yellow under halides and now it's grey and under the LEDs. The whole tank looks dull in the last video. IMO his corals are perishing. I'm sorry. He can do much better than that. Sanjay even said that for his tank, because of the size, the best option is metal halides. He knows! In truth, as a fact, any tank does better under halides and T5s. We have different wattage for any different size tank (150W, 175W, 250W, 400W 1000W), so no excuse for that matter. Not to mention the very noticeable dead spots under the colonies. That is a fact we have to deal with, specially when moving from halides and/or T5s to LEDs. The need of the large number of diodes to cover any system is only the beginning of the story for coverage and the constant and rich spectrum from halides just can't be substituted by LEDs at all. Tullio has published also that any LED system degrades and should be replaced every 4 or 5 years to keep it's performance. The investment for the right coverage using LEDs isn't worth it as an investment IMO. Halide fixtures will be there forever and you will only need to change the bulbs. By the way, Hamilton has been selling so much lately that they had to restock everything. They are actually producing halide gear, so many people are going back to halides, they said. With the ReefBrites we need to change bulbs every 2 years because of the dual arcs. The safe amount of UV and IR produced and delived by the proper halide system for the tank and the right intensity offering a safe coverage is also important. The qualities of light that we knew back in the 90's are very often forgotten by many of us in the name of the " new technology", while the so called "old technology" is very well alive among us and it's efficiency is very well diminish by many using numbers. By the way, ReefBrite has some nice features for halides that can be called real new technology. How much do you really want a "change" is what will dictate how long you will be dealing with the faults LEDs have in those aspects. The facts of lighting a reef didn't change just like the facts of sunlight didn't change. I just think to evolve is actually to have better results than we already had, not worse. The quality of results comes from quality of light and not out of any other views many are preaching for so many years comparing the 2 types of artificial lights, like saving electricity and less heat production. The price of optimal results come from investment in the right amount of energy. Sanjay's tank isn't looking as near as good as it was under those nice 400W halides he had. Just talk to him and see the videos. His excuses to change to LEDs aren't convincing me either. I told him he could simply program his Apex to turn off the lights in case the water temperature would get to a certain point. I say this because many see the truth but they don't say anything. I love Sanjay and I love you too. I just think we should talk about this. If the old timers don't talk about this no one will. It's not my business to come here and tell you what you should do, of curse, but it's always great to leave a true comment of what really matters. Tullio Dell Aquilla has been publishing some great info about the facts of light in many channels. Perhaps would be great for you to check those out. Another way to understand is by just comparing images and videos to see the level of success you can achieve with metal halides and how bad and how often we see poor systems featuring their so called "best LED systems" in this hobby. Sure it comes down to a matter of choice and perhaps "taste" (?). I just do not agree when LED companies compare their product with metal halides and T5s. Even though application has to be considered, the 3 types of light have a total distinct way to be applied and the results will naturally be distinctive as well. Time shows. Please talk to Sanjay! I don’t get why people are so vested in protesting comparisons between any product against halides and T5s. No one is compelling anyone to do anything. But change is a living process and if you want to capture market share for a specific consumer, then you must have a frame of reference. This product is competing against halides, T5s, and LEDs. Will they perform equal to better (not considering power consumption, form factor. availability, programmability, etc) than other halides, or T5s in the long run? That remains to be seen. But you can’t argue that they won’t, yet. Right? Let the market determine that through use. Perhaps they will, perhaps they won’t. Even T5s and halides evolved before they claimed their exalted status. Data. We need real world use data. Selecting reputable influencers with established tanks with amazing configurations makes complete and total sense. These folk wouldn’t just sacrifice their investments at a whim. Consumers aren’t just taking the “[vendor’s] word.” Would you?
