Watch and support ‪@Luetin09‬ 's original video - • THE END OF SLAANESH IN...
Is Games Workshop looking to Phase the God(dess) of Excess from the Warhammer 40,000 Uniberse?
I don't think Warhammer is going to banish Slaanesh ENTIRELY in the future, but their future as a major lore figure in 40k and Age of Sigmar may be in question.
Today I'm listening to Luetin's recent essay on the topic and giving my thoughts as as "devotee of Slaanesh", if you know what I mean. 😈

This claim has been made several times over the last twenty years, and yet the Prince of Pleasure is still very much an integral part of the lore, and that can't change in either 40K or Age of Sigmar without a massive rewrite of the core lore of each setting. Long established 40k lore deals with Fulgrim who is, after all, only the way he is due to the influence of Slaanesh, which is itself a major plot line of the Horus Heresy. No Slaanesh means no corrupted Fulgrim, so who gave Roboute Guilliman his nasty neck scar and left him in stasis for 10,000 years? How did the Fall of the Aeldarri Empire happen without the birth of She Who Thirsts? Why do the Drukharri even exist? How did the Great Crusade happen without the birth of Slaanesh blowing away the Warp Storms that were at the time isolating Terra from the rest of the galaxy? You can't just excise Slaanesh from 40K lore without breaking vast amounts of other lore linked to Slaanesh. The same goes for Age of Sigmar. A big deal is made of Teclis, Tyrion and Malaerion capturing Slaanesh and removing Aelven souls from its divine guts to try to recreate the Old World Elven people, with early attempts like the Idoenth Deepkin not working out properly because of the damage spending time in Slaanesh's 'stomach' did to their souls, and even later attempts like the Lumineth Realmlords did not escape the harm done by Slaanesh unscathed. All that lore goes straight out of the window if Slaanesh is excised from the Age of Sigmar lore, breaking the origin lore of all the different flavours of Aelves at a stroke. As for diluting the... spicier aspects of Slaanesh, that may happen, but I honestly think the claims in that direction are often overstated. Besides, Slaanesh is about obsessive 'perfectionism' (for a deeply disturbed definition of what is 'perfect' anyway) and the pursuit of sensation, and 'spicy' sensation is only one form of sensation. Extreme sound, pain, er... lets just say 'chemically induced altered mental states', all also fall under Slaanesh's purview just as much as Daemonettes who left their clothes back in Slaanesh's palace in the Warp. Not all things Slaanesh have to boil down to some sexual BDSM fever dream. Long story short, I don't think the sky is falling for Slaanesh in the lore or for fans of the likes of the Emperor's Children.

I thought Leutins video was just complaints with nothing really to back them up. When he talked about the Emperors Children being "tame", their "depravity" was never really sexual apart from the bdsm aesthetics of their armour (studded leather etc). Their obsessions in finding perfection and each of their warriors hyperfocusing on their skills or appearances is what drives their excess if that makes sense. Any time sexuality is talked about with slaanesh in the lore, it's always a gateway for mortal followers while the daemons and marines are rooted more in pain.

15:13 reminds me of the soldiers in Quake 1. The idea was that the normal gunners had a kind of IV system hooked up (think Bane from Batman) and everytime they'd get a kill they would be injected with some kind of drugs that they were addicted to. Graphics were primitive back then so it didnt really show up but I always think of that as something Slanesh forces may do.

Hey Angela First of all, I really appreciated this analysis video format where you express your opinion and ideas on a theme from the 40k universe. Don’t hesitate to do it on other topics, and not necessarily 40k. As for the “becoming” of Slaanesh in the 40k universe, it is true that at the more “mainstream” tangent that the setting will take in the coming years, to make it more “accessible” to the general public, we risk seeing a “tone down” on the side of excess, graphic torture, sexuality, etc… But I believe that we will keep the depraved side, especially when it comes to approaching the elites of the Imperium. Bring out the selfish side and indifferent to the suffering of the rank and file, the fact that a governor turns a blind eye to the atrocities committed on his world as long as his personal happiness is not affected or even a clergyman who preaches the good word of the Emperor in appearance but who in action does nothing to alter the fate of his flock. I believe that this is the dimension that Slaanesh is heading towards: the individualistic power of the powerful at the expense of the rest. Also, your theory about replacing Vashtorr as “new god of Chaos” speaks to me. This is an avenue that could be very plausible. Hell, why not Bel’akor, who has been in the 40k setting for years but who we are just starting to see in the spotlight? One of the aspects of Bel'akor is precisely the fact that he manipulates his prey in the shadows. It’s literally the “power behind the throne”! To determine, good continuity in your videos and looking forward to seeing a next analysis video on the channel! P.S. On a completely different note, are you in the hype for “Space Marine 2”?

The hedonites in sigmar, at least from a visual motif standpoint, have been far more successful in finding space to push the Slaanesh aesthetic. Hubris, pride, gluttony, mixed in with the outlandishly byzantine / arabesque look are all on display within that line. Its far more interesting than 'Noise Marine' only in 40k in my opinion.

Worshippers of chaos gods does not see anything weird or unusual in their habits, and do not questioning them... So, does that confirm that the Emperor is a chaos god? Well, Michael Moorcock (not less, but moooor) wrote Hawkmoon, which GW mainly copied as base for both WH4k and the Fantasy Battle. Hawkmoon mix both settings, medieval fantasy and sci-fi. There is single empire, Grand Britain, which is chaos empire which slowly corrupt rest of world, conquering it under its twisted rule. Grand Britain is led by centuries old emperor who lies in his vats does nothing, but people worship him, and thousands of people are sacrificed every day, to feed lifeforce to him, so that he stays alive. Rest of world is fallen in technology back in medieval level, while the Grand Britain still have some technologies from time before apocalypse and even some alien technology. GW just named the Empire to be "enemy of chaos" instead being the chaos (well, GW is British company, and Moorcock clearly criticised British monarchy, how people just worship that useless monarch who does nothing really, while state is actually led by other people... etc), but they didn't change much how horrible the Empire is. Most of the ideas from Hawkmoon's Grand Britain are still ideas of (40k's) the Empire by GW (in Fantasy Battle it is bit more split... The Empire still have some elements, but Ulthuan and Bretonnia have lot of these ideas too...). PS. As far as I know, Moorcock is still alive, his 80's, written more book series than most of writers wrote books...

Yeah it sucks that the aspects of Slaaneshi worship are so glossed over. I mostly delve into that myself with my own Pathfinder summoner. He's basically a sorcerer with a pet daemonette that he fleshcrafts to upgrade. I'm not saying she's slowly corrupting him but she does call him "pupa" a lot.

I often feel like GW doesn´t go far enough with Slaanesh. Yes we had that one fat dude who embraced gluttony. But what about the rest. I could easily imagine a Slaanesh demon prince or champion of vanity and envy. It would basically be a both male and female body mashed together and it would look like Frankensteins monster. Basically the person was once a vein noble, always wanted to be the most beautiful out of all. The Noble´s biggest fear was losing their beauty and growing old. So as the years and the rejuvenate treatments took their tools on the nobles body. They began with plastic surgery when that proved ineffective, they started murdering and carving up people implanting their different body pieces onto their own. ala ohh that woman´s nose is prettier than mine. I´ll kill her and cut of her nose and stitch it onto my face, now I have the prettiest nose. As the nobles body started to reject the implants, the noble gave themselves to slaanesh with the promise that the nobles beauty would never fade and they would be able to always hunt for newer more beautiful body parts. On the battlefield this creature will hunt their opponents. If they find a man or a woman who has a bodypart that it finds more beautiful then their own, they will slay the offending party rip off the body part and implant it on their own body. Be the opponent man or xenos it doesn´t matter, if they have a bodypart more beautiful than that of the creature, they will be hunted down and killed.

You won't get the 'sex, drugs & rock n roll', refined body horror depravity that Slaneesh had in the 80s & 90s. GW won't go anywhere that nowadays, they don't want to invite controversy that'll get them "cancelled".

I dunno. 40k was very much aimed at kids in the 90s when I started playing. There was little particularly explicit about Slaanesh in the lore. Most stuff was hinted at. The books are much darker now than back then, as there was no black library in those days. 40k is darker now than I remember it being back then when it was super cartoony.

Seriously, every girl I've known into 40k was a Tyranids player and yet all afraid of bugs and spiders.

@@bastonneknight9478 The bare chested Juan Diaz Daemonettes weren’t released until 2002. Second edition daemonettes were more modest, and more cartoon daemony than sexy-human looking. Big chunky feet and huge lobster claws. The Diaz minis track with the era that GW started aiming less at the kids’ market. First edition daemonettes were half bare chested I guess, but it was 2e that was more aimed at kids (and more my era).

GW is moving to a larger market and audience, with that all of their lore/background and different armies will be changing in some way shape or form. With the exposure from amazon and the other outlets they are exploring and expanding through. A good example of this would be what magic the gathering went through with deamon ms, devils and angels back in the day and what the black color was.. take a look at the early years of magic cards from art and the text/feeling of them then through the years. GW is in the process of doing the same as they go into the larger market. You will see dark elves along with the the other chaos gods.

It is at its core a WAR game. I have not played a game since the mid 90's but I read the books. I have never felt that the gods of chaos needed more graphic detail of the depravity. Less is more, especially when it comes to the degeneracy of the ruinous powers. Its counter to the message of how evil and horrible they are, if you go into lurid details about all of it. I am not someone to shy away from spicey but mind the audience and understand that in spite of all the GW insistence, the target audience is 14 to 45 year old males. We dont really need to pour gas on the fires that are already burning in the average 14 to 18 year old boy now do we?

In fantasy Slaanesh just always existed. It's implied in 40k that once Slaanesh was born in the warp he always existed (such is the nature of the warp, see Samus) and the Realm of Chaos and the Warp have always thrown little hints and nudges to both settings, so you could say that the Eldar birthed Slaanesh in 40k and because she was born as a power in the Warp, her realm always existed and hense always existed in fantasy. But that's just a lore nerd connecting dots knowing how certain things in both settings work, hard canon Slaanesh just always existed in fantasy. On the topic of GW doing away with him, they wont. They've already invested in the plastic range for AoS and even expanded on Slaanesh's lore. They could have used the lore of her being locked away by the Elves to scrap her from the game entirely but Slaanesh got a sizable range update and while it's been a long time coming, we will be seeing the Emperor's Children get their release for 40k.

My main concern with GW releasing an Emperor's Children codex is how my existing Emperor's Children army will fit (or not). I now have a vast collection of models that have fallen into the legacy vault from my various armies. My Emperor's Children number around 150 models. I hope they will remain playable. I can see GW leaning into the Emperor's Children as a safer exploration of excesses as the Astartes view will likely focus on fixations in different aspects of war. This can translate into various new units of models. Pyromaniacs who love seeing things burn. Obsessed snipers who yearn to make the perfect shot. Possessed scratch the itch for extreme body modification. Havocs enjoying the sheer destruction they can unleash. Bikers who "feel the need for speed." It will be interesting to see if GW comes up with Slaanesh specific cultists and what form these will take. Overall I suspect GW will stick to the safe route offered by the Emperor's Children. I hope they have the imagination to go beyond the Noise Marine focus on drugs and Rock'n'Roll.

Meh, I wouldn't worry too much. Leutin is... Well, I'll say he knows how to get clicks but I stopped watching his content a while back. Slaanesh just had a new novel released and codex confirmed. And yea, it wasn't as spicy as I'd have liked (also live on the spicy side of life) but it wasn't 'generic pretty-boys'. They seem to be playing up the music part for sure - which is fine, 'noise marines' are The chaos marine identifying unit, and classic emperor's children are basically 90s heavy metal cover-band images. Slaaneshy daemonettes are a bit over-dressed now for sure which, kinda annoying, but at least their descriptions are coming through cooler then a joke about 'they have crabs ....-claws'. I kinda like how they're expanding Slaanesh from a garage poster to include more versions of excess (including a desire for perfection), it makes them a bit more sensical. As for the idea that they're trying to 'taming down to sell to the children', nea, at GW prices they can barely sell to the adults with full-time jobs. They don't give a crap about kids, and no sane marketing person expects a normal kid to successfully beg their parents for a few thousand dollars worth of very fragile minis. I do think GW is being super-careful about possibly getting canceled over controversial material, and its reasonable given what happened to White Wolf's attempt to re-boot their brand. But honestly, given how much more problematic material GW is handling in its material right now, a few boobs aren't going to make any kind of a difference. So unless GW starts going on a brand-wide sweep-under-the-rug effort Slaanesh will probably be safe. It probably just comes down to money, like dark eldar and harlequins and what-not. There aren't a lot of us playing certain factions, so they just don't get much love. And in America mass-slaughter-demons just outsell skimpy-bikini-demons. Which is both weird and kinda terrifying.

I dunno man, didn't you see those WH40KidzBop novels they shat out a couple years back? And there was another marketing push not too long ago that was like "Start a Warhammer club at YOUR school!" And it's an open secret that marketing is always actually targeting the cohort just below the one they claim they are - i.e. you market things to the 18-25 year olds if you're actually trying to hook in the 13-17 demographic. (or, more accurately, their parents' wallets). So if they're actively marketing to 13-17 year olds, that means they're actually looking to attract the 8-12 audience (again, read: parents' wallets). So I think the "PG-ification" argument does hold water. I'm with you though, there's some things that are a bridge too far even for the current batch of extra bland empty suits at the top, and I suspect forsaking the big 4 is one of them.
