Great video! Love to see how you do the near impossible. In my high school woodshop program we muscle the logs, but I have a mini skid steer on order. I can't believe the support I get from the community now that we mill our own logs for our woodshop program.

Idk what's better. The actual wood slabbing, or the time that you get to spend with your dad doing what you love. I miss my dad, lost him in 2015. Spend all the time you can, while you can, with those you love.

So true. When I was young, my parents moved us out of the city and we built the house a pretty much grew up in. I spent much of my childhood in the shop with my dad, making all the cabinets and trim work for the house. I lost him in Sept 2014, miss him everyday, especially when I am out in the shop.

God bless you and your family. Back in 1969 I was 10 years old. My Dad decided to build another bathroom down in our finished basement. But it was actually a double job, dismantle the upstairs bathroom and it's fixtures, and carry them all downstairs for the "new" bathroom. And start putting in the upstairs fixtures as they came in. I was a big kid, very strong, my father was surprised when I lifted my end of the iron claw foot bathtub and said "Let's go" And promptly carried it down stairs. A lot of carpentry, plumbing, and tile work and it took us 3 weeks to finish both bathrooms. He was proud of me, It is one of my moments that I'll never forget. Remember the jobs you do with your Dad. Cherish the moment.

Thanks for the bit at the end about your childhood with your dad. From 6-12yrs old I was around my dad every waking hour on the farm. I learned so much just hanging around him, being a 2nd set of hands. Learned all the blades and wrenches and sockets and trees from him. He's been gone over 20 yrs now, but I still cherish those times. RIP pop. Thanks for everything. Miss you.

Matt dont take for granted to work with your dad, those are times you will never have a second chance to do. I miss my dad when he worked at his shop, and now I have taken up wood working and my electronics to make them work together to create really cool and nice things. Seeing you work with your dad is something I miss and can not do with my dad since he passed away.

I have to agree with the other comments. Being able to spend quality time with your Dad is something you will never get back. My Dad died young in 1979. This video brought back precious memories. You are fortunate to have all these videos to watch some day when you are old. Great job, again !!!

Great video Matt. I'm 70 now and my dad left us in 2007 at 95. I wish he was still around so we could do things together like you do with your dad. Enjoy and love your parents while you can. Seeing you with your family was the best part of the video.

Great day with your dad. My dad was never around so I shadowed my grandfather and two uncles. My grandfather had a saw mill during the depression and that’s what are used to pay for his house and feed five kids. My oldest uncle built furniture and design furniture for southern Vermont furniture a half a century ago. My other uncle had a Farm with 70 milk cows. All three of them together gave me a wonderful education on how a person can survive using his hands to work. I see that your father also gave you a wonderful heritage.

Matt -- enjoy the time with your Dad... These are moments you'll treasure forever. Trust me -- It's been almost 30 years since my dad passed. I can still hear his voice. Enjoy. BTW -- that log was gorgeous. Flooring might be boring, but that stuff would be beautiful as flooring, or a table, or....

Matthew - thank you for sharing your Thanksgiving family adventure. From your Moms intro to your Dads sweat, hard work and the old time family photos. Please, please, please continue the tradition and hold these days tightly to your heart as the value of these memories will increase exponentially. Losing my Dad 10 years ago still is a heartache for me, and I miss him every day. Do more stuff with your parents and family, and you will be lovingly rewarded. Happy Father’s Day to you and your dad! Great vid! We are part of a rare and dying breed in this nation. The “grew up in stable, happy homes” club that had great fathers who love us. Your dad is awesome and it makes me realize just how special and awesome my father is. The greatest antidepressant in the world right now doesn’t come from the pharmaceutical companies, it comes from having a loving mom and dad. I really wish all these city parents who selfishly divorce and ruin their children’s lives just so they can “be happy” could watch videos like this that show what a healthy happy family really looks like and having a happy and healthy family is the key to our own happiness. There’s a great fulfillment and satisfaction that comes , like working with your hands, from raising a good family like yours is

your dad's accent reminds me of my grandfather, he live in Plymouth WI. As well, your interactions with him remind my of my relationship with my father, I cherish this type of interaction as they won't last forever nor will the time be forgotten by you. Cheers

Hi Mathew, Hendrik here from New Zealand, I've come across trying to lift a heavy piece of material with a lever but with limited success. What I discovered works really well is to have a flat piece of material with the flat size less than the thickness of the spacers and the wide side wider than the thickness of the spacers. Also add an extra piece of material to make a "L" shape with which to lever. I hope my explanation makes sense. Cheers and thanks for the great video.

Just found this page, just would like to say great job! Respect my friend! Being a "mainstream builder" i tend to disagree with DIY / small shop woodworkers on YT, in that, all their videos are a look at me, I DIY'ed this whole project in 22min.... It was my first time using a saw, i got materials, filmed every clip, talked to the camera, edited the video and I actually made + $500....Anyway, sorry for that! But, I can tell your a man (obviously a dialed craftsman), who has respect for the process in learning and building your skills.....I bet your TIME is NEVER free! ..... DiYers take notes! Big Fan Matthew!

I always love seeing the videos when you and your dad work together. I lost my dad when I was just 20. I always live vicariously though those who are able to do projects with their dad. Great job slabbing that massive log up.

Green fungal stain made me go "OMG! Chlorociboria in oak!!" That's quite a rare thing to see in oak, you should keep the green-stained parts aside for marquetry, I've been collecting wood stained by that fungus for like 12 years and only scored deeply-stained oak once. The conditions for that fungus to develop in oak are just that uncommon. Cheers and thanks for the vids Matt, loved seeing your family in there too.

Love that you said it makes you nostalgic for when you were working outdoors with your dad as a kid. I feel the same way. My dad called Saturdays "work days," and at the time, we didn't think it was always fun to be out there doing things with him in the yard. However, I do have fond memories (grew up on about 13 acres) of working with my dad outdoors. You're totally right...working with him now as two adults on a project is even more satisfying.

Love this video!!! Red Oak dulls blades fast. Besides the residue buildup the bark is dirty and thick. Always worth chipping or peeling off whatever bark on the cut entry side for red oak.

Thank you for the share. This definitely goes to show a little patience goes a long way. Often times you just want results, or the end product so you're tempted to just rush in and get something done. Your video here is the epitome of wood working and one of the big reasons I am interested in it. It teaches you to slow down, think about what youre trying to do, and carry it out methodically. Watching this video was a great reminder.

Love working with my dad too. He taught me so much and yet our skills are different now so it's just a bonus to work with such a good man. Great log! I very much wish I loved in hardwood forests again for this reason. I miss the logs, leaves, and song birds.

Another great video! I'm not a woodworker or a lumberman but I enjoy watching an industrious and clever young man do what he loves....all the while keeping a proper balance of family. Every slab is a new treat for the eyes, thanks for sharing it on video. I can relate to your dad (&mom) and the obvious pride they show in you. I too enjoy spending time with my grown up son when he is at work. (he owns and operates a 100 ton barge in Puget Sound) Keep up the great work...all the best........

I've only seen a couple of your videos but love them. Seeing how you handle the huge logs. The longer stuff definitely presents more challenges. Figuring out how to work with it is what makes it all interesting. Plan on watching all you've got. Thanks!
